Let’s check in on some of the more discussable guy fits at the Academy Museum Gala, along with a few of the least discussable, just to keep you on your toes.
Adrien Brody
Total meh. This is surprisingly bad for him. He’s not an adventurous dresser but he’s usually an impeccable one.
Benny Safdie in Giorgio Armani
The fit’s not great, but we can tell it’s all nice. That velvet isn’t photographing well.
Bowen Yang in Denzil Patrick
Gorgeous and whimsical. Love that tie or placket situation.
Brian Tyree Henry
Never fails to bring it, but we’re surprised by how conventional this is.
Channing Tatum in Fendi
He gets credit for the slightly unusual color. While we’ll always stick to our guns on men’s formalwear requiring ties, we’re kind of intrigued by how brooches have replaced them as the standard accompaniment.
Charlie Hunnam
Resting on hot.
Colman Domingo in Valentino
We want to like the jacket, but it looks like something Judy Garland would have worn at Carnegie Hall. The shoes are great fun.
Damson Idris in Prada
Beautiful color.
Dwayne Johnson in Giorgio Armani
He’s one guy who would probably look pretty silly with a bow tie wrapped around that redwood neck. The look is impeccable and totally him.
Eddie Redmayne in Giorgio Armani
Y’know, we make fun of him a lot, but we truly do appreciate that he poses on the red carpet like a menswear model. Sure, it can look a little goofy and the Blue Steel takes over, but he’s not awkwardly trying to do something with his hands and the whole approach is kind of impressively aggressive. We wish more male stars did it. This is a gorgeous outfit but we wish the tie were oxblood.
Jacob Elordi in Bottega Veneta
We’ll never love the shades but he is one gorgeously tall drink of monster.
Jeremy Allen White in Louis Vuitton
Nicely done.
Jeremy Strong in Loro Piana
Honestly, we’re starting to love him. He manages to have fun with it, poke fun at it, and still make impressive style choices.
Jude Law in Giorgio Armani
No arguments here.
Kodi Smit-McPhee in Saint Laurent
We’re extremely grateful that he tried something different and it looks pretty great on him, but the pants need a hemming. We tend to dislike cuffed outerwear sleeves, however.
LaKeith Stanfield in Dior Homme
It’s a genuinely interesting look, but he looks like a bartender at a very chic club.
Logan Lerman in Saint Laurent
We love him for the attempt and the silhouette looks great on him, but that satin shirt isn’t working.
Macaulay Culkin
We don’t think we’ve seen him on a red carpet not looking high since his Home Alone days. It’s a great look, though.
Role Model
The shirt doesn’t go and the jacket should be buttoned.
Sebastian Stan
We wouldn’t claim that standard formalwear was absolutely required here, although this does seem a little bit below the dress code. He looks pretty hot in it, but that’s a lot of satin.
Tyriq Withers in Giorgio Armani
He’s gorgeous, the outfit is boring, we’ll take the shoes.
Will Arnett in Giorgio Armani
It’s not terrible. The details are all mostly correct. But he’s looking at a possible awards campaign and his style could use a little freshening up. The hair is terrible.
