The stars came out in high, gunning-for-the-BAFTA style at the London premiere of One Battle After Another. Let’s see how they did. Or rather, let’s tell them what we think of how they did.
Teyana Taylor (in Oude Waag) and Aaron Pierre
What a fucking stunning couple.
As always, it’s dramatic and almost entirely too much. We don’t think it makes much sense to wear a head covering and a coat without a top, but her style is never about making sense. It’s always about making an impact.
Chase Infiniti in Iris van Herpen Couture
We love that she took the risk of picking an Iris Van Herpen dress, since her designs don’t translate well to a red carpet setting. We can’t say it’s working all that well here. The lighting’s not dramatic enough for it and this choice isn’t set off by her coloring. It’s a fascinating dress and she looks gorgeous in it, but it’s probably a bit too editorial for the setting.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Cleaned up nicely.
Joel Edgerton
This looks really cute on him. We keep saying that the leisure suit is due for a revival and several Boomers have recoiled in horror at the suggestion, but this is the kind of modern update we mean: a suit-like ensemble with a much more casual and minimalist vibe to it.
Maya Rudolph
This is a shocking change of pace for her. Her usual tastes run towards caftans and big slouchy pantsuits. Director Paul Thomas Anderson has been her partner for several decades, so she must have felt the need to go a little more glam for the occasion. We can’t say we love the dress, but the earrings are cute.
Naomi Campbell in Alaïa
Goddess, as always.
Sabrina Dhowre Elba in John Galliano
This is sharp and just unusual enough to be eye-catching, but as much as we dislike center slits on skirts, we hate when they put them in the front and back like that. She could also use some more aggressive jewelry styling.
Sean Penn
Sure. Okay.
