When a lady shows up to an event in a red satin gown, it tends to come off like a statement about how she won’t be cowed or shamed. Blame it on Scarlett O’Hara. Sydney Sweeney’s Oscar de la Renta gown at the Emmys would have come across that way even without the… overwhelming decolletage, shall we say.
But this is just tacky and stale to our eyes. We hesitate to say that she’s “right” to do so, but we’ve always felt her boob-centric promotional style made good sense for someone her age, who looks like her. It’s not original and it doesn’t always lend itself to chicness, but in the self-promotion game, it’s — or rather they’re — a tool with a proven track record. There are plenty of ways to show the ladies off to their full effect and still pull together a stylish look, but this just comes off like a cheap-looking gown with a bust that’s way too small for her. The color is gorgeous, and we might not have minded the shininess if she’d gotten rid of that awful wrap and if the bust didn’t look like it was about to erupt. Her hair is pretty and that necklace is lovely, although she should’ve taken a page from Elizabeth Taylor, who always understood that a cleavage display begs for a massive, obnoxious pendant.
