As we predicted yesterday, Princess Cathy is back on duty. What we didn’t predict is that she’d be sporting a massive pile of newly blonde hair.  The Prince and Princess of Wales visited London’s Natural History Museum’s (they’re co-patrons) new gardens this morning, giving her the opportunity to do a little Sporty Cathy turn while everyone gawked at her goldilocks.

In the previous generations, British royal style was defined by ladylike dresses and frumpy hats, but Kate’s going to face serious pressure to modernize the role when she gets her promotion. We think she’s likely to continue her extremely retro more formal style, which tends to pull from pre-War royal fashion, but her day looks are likely to be in this mode: modern, relatable, aspirational. In other words, this will be the 21st Century image of the Queen, most likely. It looks great. Love the jacket, love the flats. The hair is too much. While it’s nice to see her switch things up a little, the style is seriously wiggy and giving Christian Girl Autumn vibes.

UPDATED TO ADD: The reason we’re comfortable talking about her hair is because we know for a fact that it’s her hair and not a wig and we know that because we’ve been covering her all year and for over a decade before that. But since we’ve been getting the “How very dare you” responses, here’s Kate later in the day, at the same event, after it rained and her hair lost some of its curl:

Your girl got some extensions and got a little too aggressive with the curling iron that morning, but we aren’t talking about someone who was forced to wear a wig because of health reasons, so dial the outrage back, please.
