Our principles, such as they are, demand that we hate this. And by “this,” we mean the custom Dior jumpsuit worn by The Super Mario Bros. Movie star Anya Taylor Joy to the film’s LA premiere.
It’s essentially a real-world, high fashion version of her character Princess Peach’s costume from the film:
We’ve long railed against the idea of red carpet theme dressing, which is when a star dresses in some way that pays homage to whatever character they played or project they’re promoting. We can understand why some stars would want to do it, especially if they’re taking the latest spin on some sort of franchise or intellectual property. To show up in a themed outfit is a way of branding yourself (I’m Princess Peach for real!) while also setting yourself slightly apart from the character, as if to remind everyone that it’s just a costume that you only intend to wear for a brief time (I’m movie star Anya Taylor-Joy, having fun!). We won’t deny that it’s a pretty cute take on the costume, but this isn’t fashion, it’s high-end cosplay. It’s cute, Dior gets to stamp their name on it, and she gets to take it off and move on to her next project. We can’t claim it’s inappropriate in any way. We’re still harrumphing at it.
