Yesterday: A business-like Christmas queen! Today, a gal who’s all about treating herself well. Because sometimes, a good Christmas dress is just about looking drop-dead fabulous. In The Last Holiday, directed by Wayne Wang, Queen Latifah plays Georgia, a low-key and unassuming retail worker who discovers just before Christmas that she has a rare disorder that leaves her with only three weeks to live. Spoiler: this film is not a tragedy. In fact, this film couldn’t be a more straightforward piece of easily predictable fluff, but sometimes, that’s all you want from your holiday movie, areweright? Anyway, she gathers up what must have been a considerable amount of savings for a retail worker and heads off to Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic for a final sojourn of holiday fabulousness before she gives up the ghost completely. After being referred to as “Ma’am,” she assess her own dowdy style and immediately heads to a local chic boutique and engages in that most traditional of rom com scenes, the “trying on outfits in front of a mirror while snotty salesgirls look on” montage, resulting in this gorgeous selection, which she triumphantly wears to dinner.

What’s so great about this look (devised by costume designer Daniel Orlandi) is that a man had absolutely nothing to do with it. She didn’t get dressed up to impress anyone else. She’s not even having dinner with anyone. She just wanted to stroll into that dining room making Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman look like a cheap pretender to her throne. It’s the ultimate makeover gown, the ultimate holiday dress, and it has no meanings deeper than that. Sometimes, a lady just wants to look good as hell for herself on the holiday while she enjoys her meal.
Next up: An actual princess!
