Renate Reinsve Was Born to Do This

The celebrated Norwegian actress, and The Worst Person in the World and Sentimental Value lead, has helped put her country’s film scene on the map.

Renate on playing her character, Nora, in Sentimental Value:

“My character carries a lot of emotional weight without really understanding why,” Reinsve says of Nora, who is impacted by the suffering of a grandmother she never even met. “It was an interesting part of exploring this character—what she knew about herself and what she didn’t know.” Playing Nora, she adds, was one of the hardest things she’s ever done, but she’s just so glad to be here. “It’s a world that, from when I was very young, I just never thought I would be this deep into,” she says. “I’m still pinching my arm.”

Renate on the role that taught her the most:

“Up until I did The Worst Person in the World, I was so shy and so closed off from my own emotions. And [as Julie], I was very sincere and open about them. I always play shut-down people, [but here] I was able to open up and to have people relate to that. Suddenly I wasn’t alone in those things that I felt were really ugly about myself.”

Renate on her craziest Hollywood story:

“Sebastian Stan and I crashed a wedding. I wasn’t famous at all at that point, though I had done The Worst Person in the World. I thought I would be invisible, but they were getting married because they both had seen that movie and fell in love over it. I was like their mascot.”
