Fashion freakshows Julia Fox and Jodie Turner-Smith came to the amfAR London gala in exactly the kind of looks we think an amfAR gala requires: loud and weird and maybe even a little tacky. We’re thankfully very far away from the earliest days of the AIDS crisis and there’s certainly no reason anymore to consider this a disease that targets queer people, but amfAR galas traditionally always had a little bit of glitz and drag to them, in a bit of a nod to those early dark days. There’s nothing wrong with showing up to these events in standard gala wear, but we do love when the freakshows get the spotlight. It should go without saying that “freakshow” is a term of admiration ’round these parts.

We love this and she’s extremely well-suited to it. If we wanted to be bitchy about it we’d say it feels like a bit of a Gaga throwaway look, but it has more of a fairy tale sort of freakiness to it that works better for Julia. We love that she never just puts on a dress and picks some shoes and jewelry to go with it (not that there’s anything wrong with that approach). Instead, she devises an entire character to inhabit. It’s drag and she’s very good at it.

PURE LOVE. We wish the bodysuit wasn’t pulling so much, but then again, it seems a little picayune to mention it when she’s sporting those bologna boobs. Pairing it with that cloak was genius.
