Emma Thompson stopped by The Late Show to talk about her upcoming Apple TV limited series Down Cemetery Road and also to do that thing that Emma Thompson has been doing effortlessly for four decades: defy expectations. See, there’s a fairly consistent style trope that a significant number of mature actresses tend to adopt when they’ve aged out of most leading lady roles which we’ve dubbed “Wacky Aunt.” Everyone from Helena Bonham Carter to Pamela Anderson has played around in that style pool, some of them for so long that it’s become their signature style. And to be fair, that was Emma’s approach for most of the last decade. But we’re pleasantly surprised to see her rather aggressively move away from that cliche.

That’s just straight up silver-haired chic. No wacky to be found anywhere here, this is pure grownup glamour. We’re not entirely convinced that the sequins work on the sleeves, but those pants are gorgeous. If you’re concerned that Miss Emma has completely abandoned her more expressive style ways in order to adopt a conventional glamour, rest assured:

This Auntie is still as wacky as she wants to be.
