It’s Tiara Time once again at Windsor Castle and Princess Cathy plopped her signature one on top of her much-discussed tresses for the evening. The gown is a bit of a departure for her:
It’s both more regal (gold lace is not something she’s tended to wear before now) and more mature in style than previous gowns. The style is a melange of ’70s and ’80s gown elements, with its duster-style overlay, high collar and padded shoulders. It feels very much like something the late Queen or Princess Margaret might’ve worn circa 1980. The champagne color is also a bit of a departure for her. Like all of her choices, it’s tasteful to a fault. She looks lovely and this is an interesting choice that could signal where her royal style is headed. It’s exquisitely appropriate for her position, but on a purely style level, it’s a bit mature and sedate. An Oscar gown for Jane Fonda or Helen Mirren. In related news, the tiara over long hair worn down reads a little Disney. That’s not a compliment.
