George Clooney was feeling better after skipping the photo call and press conference for Jay Kelly at the Venice Film Festival, but he rallied and pulled himself together because Amal said there’s no damn way I’m skipping this thing because I’ve got the hair and the dress. Thus it came to pass that Mr. Clooney was on the red carpet along with his co-stars and other celebrity well-wishers. Let’s assess them all.

Her dress is very pretty, but it looks like she’s sporting a fanny pack. He looks fine, but his pants need hemming and nothing will make a guy look sleazier faster than trying to slick back long hair into a formal hairstyle.

It’s weirdly beautiful and we can’t take our eyes off it, so we guess it’s getting the job done for her. Going clean with the styling and the accessorizing was smart. This dress doesn’t need any help.

Meh. He looks great, of course. We can’t say we love the color of her gown and if you’ve been reading us any length of time you might remember that we hate mini-dresses with big-ass trains attached. That aside, the textile just looks so tortured.

Greta Gerwig (in Rodarte)

We like the idea here – black embellished poppies on a black background. It has a playful elegance to it. But the shape of this thing is really drab.

Laura Dern in Armani Privé

Well that’s just hideous.

Riley Keough in Chloé

Um… ditto? We’re not sure there’s more to be said about these last two frocks. They’re almost aggressively ugly. Laura Dern look like she climbed out of an oil slick while covered in film strips and Riley looks like she’s in some earth-toned gothic horror story about a skirt-eating monster.
