RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE ALL STARS: Tournament of All Stars Snatch Game

The faces are refreshed, the hair is coiffed, the dress sizes have come down, and the semi-finalists are ready to do battle. As we figured, they were waiting for the semi-finals to break out the Snatch Game challenge. There are two things you can always count on with the Snatch Game: the queens are going to go on and on about how scary this challenge is and, despite that, several of them will have little or no game plan for their own snatch.

The semi-finalists all got to come out and serve looks, but we felt a little cheated because we would have liked seeing them all find out who else was competing.

The Werk Room became entirely about Mistress, which is the entire reason she acts the way she does – and we think it’s at least partially the reason why so many of the queens put up with it or try to shrug it off. They’re all reality television veterans and they know how this game is played. Mistress is dealing with a group of queens who have a lot less to prove than the queens she eliminated from her own bracket. Everyone feels that they’ve earned their place in the semi-finals and none of them are truly taking the bait.

The way she openly declared war on Ginger tended to give up the game. In the earlier bracket, she needled the weaker queens in order to get them eliminated, but in this bracket, there really aren’t that many weak queens, so she’s going after the obvious frontrunner. It’s not likely to work for her, especially since the queens are no longer handing out points, but mainly because Ginger is simply too smart to give a shit about it. And now for the snatches…

In Untucked, Bosco seemed a little thrown by how things shook out this time. She’s got that killer combination of wit and drop-dead glamour that Ru absolutely loves in her queens, which is why she’s got every reason to think of herself as a frontrunner. We wouldn’t say this was a terrible snatch, but she wasn’t quite as quick-witted as she needed to be. She did okay, but just okay.

Jorgeous has found her comedy lane and it’s playing macho dudes. For whatever reason, it comes off absolutely hilarious when she does it and it’s a nice reminder that drag isn’t about impersonating women, it’s about commenting on all forms of gender expectations.

She had the look and as impersonations go, it was a pretty good one, but Jane Lynch has a world-class dryness to her that comes from decades of comedic acting and Daya just… doesn’t.

We’ll be honest: we’ve never really been on the Cucu train and this performance was a perfect example of why. She’s always been very charming and she’s clearly used to that super-human level of charm helping her get by, but to us, her drag always seemed a little loopy and half-assed – which is not, to be clear, a mark against it on its own. Like we said: very charming. But in a talent competition – even one as rigged with shenanigans as Drag Race – if you’re not prepared, you’re going to look bad next to those careerist queens who are hyper-focused on the prize. Like a lot of Cynthia’s drag, this was a cute idea, a fairly funny look, and… pretty much nothing else to offer.

Irene has been savvy throughout her return and picking an old school dead celebrity like Zsa Zsa was clearly playing to Ru’s obsessions. She did okay. She had the look, she sort of had the voice, and she’s naturally funny enough that she never went off the rails.

Meh. She should know better than to show up with a half-assed character that Ru didn’t know and no real jokes to deliver. We’re not sure what she was thinking, but going by her tearful confession later in the episode, she’s out of practice.

It feels like a combination of lowered expectations and surprisingly smart choices are helping Lydia sail through the competition. That sounds a little more backhanded than we mean it to, but she really has done better than we would have predicted going into the season. She was smart picking someone Ru would respond well to and even smarter to come with a couple of jokes and catchphrases at hand. That’s basically all you need to be safe in a Snatch Game.

We wouldn’t place this performance at the level of, say, Jinkx’s Judy Garland, meaning that it’s not necessarily an all-time legendary snatch, but it was far and away the best snatch in the room and everyone knew it. It’s to Ginger’s enormous credit that she’s not engaging even a little bit with all of the drama happening around her, even when there are obvious attempts to get her down in the mud. She’s a testament to how talent and professionalism are always going to be the most important factors in succeeding at Drag Race.

We were genuinely surprised at how unprepared she seemed to be. We’ve defended a lot of her shenanigans because they actually don’t amount to much and we can’t bring ourselves to act offended over a bitchy drag queen, but this episode really gave the impression that all of her shit-stirring is cover for her drag not being the obvious front-runner.

The runway category was a tortured pun, but the results were pretty fantastic. Boscos’s look was probably the most original and least cliched of the bunch. Jorgeous served up a surprisingly chic suit that turned into a dazzling gown. Daya’s track suit was a cute idea, but we think she defaults to too many butch queen looks for this competition. Cynthia’s reveal was a disaster and her costume was cheap-looking. Irene had the best reveal and the most original look of the bunch. Aja’s final gown was gorgeous, but the suit was ugly and the reveal was awkward. That is the best drag Lydia’s ever served and her look was legitimately stylish. Ginger’s bridal look was gorgeous and there’s a long tradition of groom-to-bride drag reveals, but it feels like a cliche and her suit look wasn’t great. Mistress’s final dress was nice enough, but the fat suit she walked out in was incredibly amateurish.

As expected — by literally everyone. We can’t really argue with it this time, and if we’re being honest, we don’t see how any of the other queens are going to show themselves to be more deserving of the crown than her. She’s just the most talented and professional of the entire lot.

Cucu and Mistress wound up in the bottom, and you just know the latter was furious about that. There really wasn’t any question as to who won this showdown.

As we said, she’s an extremely charming and entertaining performer, but a competition, even a semi-fake one like Drag Race, requires a level of preparation that just didn’t suit her style.
