Jenna Ortega came to the second season premiere of Wednesday engaging in the kind of theme-dressing we can’t get mad about it. Even so, we were thinking of putting this one up to an IN or OUT vote since the only single-look red carpet post we have planned for the day, but your girl likes to pick fashion that fascinates as much as it repulses. To wit:

Yes, it’s a snakeskin dress. Your girl is molting. We kind of love this, if we’re being honest. Sure, it’s a little repulsive, but it’s also strangely beautiful and “repulsive but strangely beautiful” is where her style sweet spot lies. Wednesday Addams is a character so iconic that she’s become permanently associated with a certain strain of goth style. We love that she’s largely resisted the temptation to dress in more expected goth styles for her promo work and instead finds ways to express that brand of dark chicness without being cliched about it. We love the way the shredded peplum and the way it evokes shed skin. We love the sheerness, which adds a level of grotesqueness to the design but isn’t trading in look-at-my-panties hottitude. The hair and makeup have that classic Dracula’s Daughter sort of vibe to it, and we like that she didn’t choose a lot of jewelry or try to dress this look up any more than it needed to be. She looks weird, a little gross, and beautiful. We’d say she nailed the brief.
