We didn’t feel that the gentlemen in the cast of director Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme represented his rather quirky and whimsical aesthetic at the Cannes Film Festival photo call, with Richard Ayoade being the one most in tune with Anderson’s style and Bill Murray, as always, being the least.
We’d like to think that Richard took Bill out clothes shopping in Berlin before the premiere, because a distinct stepping up of effort was evident.
This is great. We realize that this will probably sound like a backhanded compliment (and it probably is, if we’re being honest), but this is just about the best a lemon-yellow suit, pink shirt and brown tie could ever possibly look in combination.
He was ever thus. It makes no sense whatsoever to be wearing suede shoes and a sweater with a seersucker suit. Granted, directors aren’t held to the same standards as stars on the red carpet, nor should they be, but we’ve seen him in much better outfits than this. This looks like a laundry day look.
None of this actually works, but this is the most effort we’ve seen him make in a long time. A plain suit would have been the easy choice, but there’s a real attempt at texture, layering and color coordination. It’s awful, but we want to be encouraging.
