As a music legend, a luxury fashion designer and a co-chair of this year’s Met Gala, Pharrell could have been feeling a significant amount of pressure to step up and deliver a killer look for the night. But his entire public persona is one of perpetually unruffled coolness, so we doubt he was all that worried about the evening. We figure once you’ve committed to the blazer with 100,000 pearls attached to it, you can rest a little easy.
It’s gorgeous and luxe and very chic, but the design isn’t particularly interesting. Granted, he was never going to show up in something outrageous, but if you didn’t know those were pearls, would you be as impressed? Especially since, from more than ten feet away, you can barely tell it’s beaded at all. Still, the point of a piece like this is the press it generates and everyone who follows these sorts of things knows that Pharrell showed up in 100,000 pearls. We love the flared pants, which are a bit unexpected. The shoes are a letdown.
