We wanted to do a whole opening line being all excited about how Carey Mulligan has finally embraced a more glam style and then yell “PSYCH” at you when you scroll down and learn the sad truth of the matter, but there’s simply no way we can sell that lie based on the above thumbnail.
The weird part is, we actually like the dress. We’re not always the biggest fans of scoop necklines or thick straps, but both elements provide the only interest and they work pretty well with the column shape and lack of color. It’s the styling here that’s kind of sad — or the relative lack of styling, we should say. She is wearing makeup and jewelry, but her preferences work as hard as they can to convince you that she’s not. Look, we get that she’s not a “bold lip and sparkly eyeshadow” kind of gal, and we’d never suggest that she has to be, but that’s “school picture day” styling. That center part pixie cut with bangs and a flip is asking too little hair to do too much work. It actually is a semi-cute sort of casual look, but we’d have suggested a couple of diamond hair clips at least.
