Cynthia Erivo came to the Grammys to campaign for her Oscar pay tribute to Quincy Jones and she took the opportunity to do a major reset on her red carpet style. We’ve been noting for a while now that she’s been moving away from the Elphaba-inspired fashion that characterized most of her public-facing style for the last year, but this look feels like a sharp break from the recent past:
It’s sleek, it’s got way more of a sci-fi feel than a fantasy one, it’s minimalist (in comparison to her usual preferences for maximalism), and it’s NOT green or black, which is a major point in its favor. But is this really working for you? We gave it fairly high marks in our Cosmopolitan writeup but in the light of day, we have some quibbles. For one, we hate the plunging neckline/turtleneck/belly button combination. We like the jewelry and appreciate that it’s toned down considerably, but we hate this trend for wearing bracelets or cuffs over sleeves. We don’t know… we appreciate it for being weirdly unexpected, and we LOVE it for not being another witch costume, but there’s something awkward about the design. You make the call on this one:
