Awards season kicked into high gear last night as several high-profile events were held at the same time. The Costume Designers Guild Awards doesn’t always get the sort of A-list, frontrunner shine (i.e., attendance) that other, more showy ceremonies tend to attract. But in recent years, some savvy stars have made it a stop on their way to the Oscars and the Costume Designers Guild is smart to attract them by waving trophies in their faces. To that end, Emilia Perez star Zoe Saldana made an elegant appearance to pick up the Spotlight Award.
It’s a lovely gown – and yes, we’re surprised to find ourselves saying that about a brown and black gown, but we really love the smokey/burnt effect the black overlay is giving. It’s serving drama in a low key and it suits her really well. Her tastes have always run toward the slightly odd and this feels like a nice compromise between her quirkier instincts and the kind of chicness called for during this run of awards shows.
