Berlin International Film Festival: Timothée Chalamet at the A COMPLETE UNKNOWN Photo Call and Premiere

Prince Timmée continues to rewrite the rules for Oscar campaigning style for men. Granted there really aren’t that many rules (“Just show up” being the most important and most widely followed), and there’s no indication that his current style direction is likely to win him an Oscar, but maybe that’s kind of the point of it. The star of A Complete Unknown and Best Actor Oscar nominee came to the Berlin International Film Festival in his particular brand of attention-seeking dude style.

So, first: It’s a photo call, which means he’s perfectly fine showing up in jeans. Second, the jeans are really cute. And third, he’s sporting a vintage Columbus Crew soccer hoodie. It’s not the first time he’s used his promotional work to show support for the sport, which he used to play. While it’s tempting to bemoan all of this as a ploy to remake his image, it actually feels like he’s spent most of the last year loosening up quite a bit. We’ll be sad if we never see the return of lace shirt Timmée or open-back jumpsuit Timmée but we wouldn’t want to see him forced to wear things he doesn’t want to. For the premiere, he got only slightly dressier:

It’s actually a pretty cute look and we don’t doubt that it cost money. We think a lot of what he’s been doing with his public style comes down to cockiness and flexing. He’s on his third second Oscar nomination before his 30th birthday. All of his films are critically acclaimed and most of them do well at the box office. He knows he doesn’t have to show up at these events in a tux or a suit because what, exactly, is going to happen to him if he doesn’t? Still, we tend to think this sort of thing will get less cute over time. He’s not likely to win the Oscar this time and he knows it. We wonder if he’d be dressing differently if he were an obvious frontrunner.
