We love when a star delivers a style swerve. For the London screening of A Complete Unknown, Elle Fanning ditched the princess gowns and mid- century haute styles she tends to favor and served up a completely unexpected look.
Unfortunately, as much as we like to encourage stars to step outside their comfort zones and avoid falling into style ruts, we’re afraid we can’t sign off on this particular instance of risk-taking. It just doesn’t suit her. We think there are plenty of suit options available to her and we also think she can work low-key or even drably chic styles, but this one just isn’t doing it for her. First, if you put her in a slouchy suit, it’s just gonna read like a little girl playing dressup in grownup clothes. Second, this whole look falls apart with that untucked shirt. It looks so much better on the model in the look book. The pants need a hemming and the shoes, while very cute, belong with a less serious look. We appreciate the attempt to try something different and now we’re curious as to how she’s going to navigate this pole dance. Should be interesting!
