We’ve been in the red carpet commentary game a long time; long enough to watch social and industry changes play out, from the rise of streaming platforms to the ubiquity of stylists to the massive shifts in entertainment journalism that occurred when the field became much more diversified, to #MeToo to #TimesUp to a bona fide worldwide pandemic. We’ve seen it all play out on the red carpet in one way or another. Why are we musing about this now, as we look upon Ella Purnell and Hailee Steinfeld at the second season premiere of their animated series Arcane: League of Legends?

Because when we started this gig, they didn’t even have second season premiere red carpet events for cartoons and even if they did, the stars sure as hell wouldn’t have shown up like this. We can remember countless conversations about whether we should even cover cartoon premieres simply because most people showed up to them dressed appropriately for a Target run. Ladies, we appreciate your efforts. Now we’re going to dissect them a little.

Is Jenna Ortega pissed that she didn’t get to this one first? It’s perfect Goth Bad Girl style and Ella is extremely well suited to it. Admittedly, we think the leather is so overworked that it’s looking a little tortured. And while we can understand not leaning too hard into the steampunk styling, we think boots would’ve been a better choice than those ladylike slingbacks. Still, it’s a strong-as-hell look. The pigtails are a nice touch.

That’s a hell of a lot of look for a Netflix cartoon. While we can’t consider a gold sequined bra anything but a little tacky, this looks pretty great on her, possibly because the styling is so low-key. That’s a great hairstyle she’s sporting, but it strikes us as a little aging.
