Darren Criss attended the CFDA Fashion Awards in a Christian Siriano creation and we feel a blasphemy coming on.
We’re just gonna say it: This is tired. We have long been of the opinion that all male stars should run far away from businesslike clothing and that they should embrace dandyism as a way to highlight their roles as artists and performers. We have also long been of the opinion that all men of all shades and stripes should feel as free as possible to express their femininity in their clothing choices. But we’re starting to come around to Billy Porter’s way of thinking, at least a tiny little bit, when he took Harry Styles to task for wearing a dress in Vogue. Look, every guy should be allowed to wear a skirt without harassment if he wants to. That’s not our issue here. Our issue is that this specific look, a tuxedo jacket over a massive ball skirt, was originally executed by the legendary Hector Xtravaganza of the House of Xtravaganza. It’s an iconic look that originated in the ballroom community. Billy knew this and wore it as a tribute to that community. But Christian has made this look several times now and there’s something a little unpleasant about a straight white male performer sexing up a look pioneered by a legendary queer Latinx artist at a high-ranking fashion event to which he never would have been invited. Sure, get your dandy on. Get in touch with your inner diva or inner woman. We’re fine with all of that. But maybe don’t endlessly appropriate an iconic queer look until it starts getting stripped of its queer connotations and history.
