This year’s VMAs red carpet was characterized by two somewhat surprising elements: full-bore fantasy cosplay and salutes to the legends of the past. No one embodied that latter approach better than Sabrina Carpenter, who ditched the cutesy-poo pop star styling and embraced grownup divahood. And there is simply no better designer for a glamorous gal to turn to when she wants to declare her grownup divahood than Mr. Bob Mackie.
This gown was originally worn by Madonna to the 1991 Academy Awards when she was at the very height of her Marilyn obsession, so this feels like Sabrina paying homage to her spiritual mother and grandmother. We like that, unlike its previous wearer, she kept the styling simple – no opera gloves, no wrap, jewelry that could be called demure. It feels more modern and sophisticated that way. We have no notes. The styling is perfect and she’s never looked so sophisticated.
