The Emmy nominations are out! Snubs! Surprises! Confusing categories! Let’s get into this, shall we? We will, of course, have much more developed opinions on all of this when we’ve had time to sit with it and record tomorrow’s pod. But for now, first impresh!
Outstanding talk series:
“The Daily Show”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live”
“Late Night with Seth Myers”
“The Late Show with Steven Colbert”
Meh. We’ll let you all make a prediction here. We only watch these shows long enough to look at the clothes.
Outstanding reality competition program:
“The Amazing Race”
“RuPaul’s Drag Race
“Top Chef”
“The Traitors”
“The Voice”
Believe it or not, despite the fact that the constant Emmy wins help sell our book, we don’t think Drag Race is all that deserving anymore. We’d pick The Traitors.
Outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie:
Matt Bomer, “Fellow Travelers”
Richard Gadd, “Baby Reindeer”
Jon Hamm, “Fargo”
Tom Hollander, “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”
Andrew Scott, “Ripley”
Very happy for Matt Bomer. It will almost certainly go to Andrew Scott, although it’s possible Richard Gadd could cause an upset.
Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series
Jonathan Bailey “(Fellow Travelers”)
Robert Downey Jr. (“The Sympathizer”)
Tom Goodman-Hill (“Baby Reindeer”)
John Hawkes (“True Detective: Night Country”)
Lamorne Morris (“Fargo”)
Lewis Pullman (“Lessons In Chemistry”)
Treat Williams (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”)
Nice to see Williams get some posthumous love, but we’d give this to Bailey.
Outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie:
Jodie Foster, “True Detective: Night Country”
Brie Larson, “Lessons in Chemistry”
Juno Temple, “Fargo”
Sofia Vergara, “Griselda”
Naomi Watts, “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”
JODIE!!!!!! To be fair, she may be our choice, but we’re not convinced it should or will go to her. We suspect Larson and Temple have some juice.
Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series
Dakota Fanning (“Ripley”)
Lily Gladstone (“Under The Bridge”)
Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”)
Aja Naomi King (“Lessons In Chemistry”)
Diane Lane (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”)
Nava Mau (“Baby Reindeer”)
Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”)
Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis are the first Indigenous women nominated in this category. We’d be happy with either of them taking it, although Jessica Gunning did great work.
Outstanding limited or anthology series:
“Baby Reindeer”
“Fargo”
“Lessons in Chemistry”
“Ripley”
“True Detective: Night Country”
Honestly? It could go to any of these.
Outstanding lead actress in a drama series:
Jennifer Aniston, “The Morning Show”
Carrie Coon, “The Gilded Age”
Maya Erskine, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”
Anna Sawai, “Shogun”
Reese Witherspoon, “The Morning Show”
A little surprised by Erskine and Coon, although we do love the latter’s coolly low-emotive performance. We wonder if it won’t go to Sawai.
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”)
Nicole Beharie (“The Morning Show”)
Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown Netflix”)
Greta Lee (“The Morning Show”)
Lesley Manville (“The Crown”)
Karen Pittman (“The Morning Show”)
Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”)
Happy for Nicole Beharie but we want Baranski to take this one.
Outstanding lead actor in a drama series:
Idris Elba, “Hijack”
Donald Glover, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”
Walton Goggins, “Fallout”
Gary Oldman, “Slow Horses”
Hiroyuki Sanada, “Shogun”
Dominic West, “The Crown”
Shocked that Cosmo Jarvis was left out. Even more shocked that West was nominated. Love to see Slow Horses get some love. Happy for Goggins. No predictions.
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Tadanobu Asano (“Shōgun”)
Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”)
Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”)
Jon Hamm (“The Morning Show”)
Takehiro Hira (“Shōgun”)
Jack Lowden (“Slow Horses”)
Jonathan Pryce (“The Crown”)
Look at Hamm, getting two noms in two different categories for two different shows. Even so, give it to Takehiro Hira.
Outstanding drama series:
“The Crown”
“Fallout”
“The Gilded Age”
“The Morning Show”
“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”
“Shogun”
“Slow Horses”
“Three Body Problem”
Surprised to see Three Body Problem here. We thought it had a lot of issues. Every other show on the list is a great choice. We hope it goes to anyone but The Crown.
Outstanding lead actor in a comedy series:
Matt Berry, “What We Do in the Shadows”
Larry David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
Steve Martin, “Only Murders in the Building”
Martin Short, “Only Murders in the Building”
Jeremy Allen White, “The Bear”
D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, “Reservation Dogs”
So great for Berry and Woon-A-Tai, which are pleasant surprises. It’s ridiculous that The Bear is listed as a comedy series. Did Jeremy Allen White produce one laugh in the entire run of the show? Let’s give this to Martin Short.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Lionel Boyce (“The Bear”)
Paul W. Downs (“Hacks”)
Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”)
Paul Rudd (“Only Murders In The Building”)
Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”)
Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”)
Moss-Bachrach did the best work, but again, this wasn’t a comedy.
Outstanding lead actress in a comedy series
Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary”
Ayo Edebiri, “The Bear”
Selena Gomez, “Only Murders in the Building”
Maya Rudolph, “Loot”
Jean Smart, “Hacks”
Kristen Wiig, “Palm Royale”
Again, love Edebiri, but that show is just not funny. Love Wiig as well, but that show was awful. We think this one comes down to Rudolph and Gomez.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Carol Burnett (“Palm Royale”)
Liza Colón-Zayas (“The Bear”)
Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”)
Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”)
Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”)
Meryl Streep (“Only Murders In The Building”)
THRILLED for Carol Burnett (who isn’t exactly lacking for Emmys). We want Einbinder, but Colón-Zayas did amazing non-comedic work.
Outstanding comedy series
“Abbott Elementary”
“The Bear”
“Curb Your Enthusiasm”
“Hacks”
“Only Murders in the Building”
“Palm Royale”
“Reservation Dogs”
“What We Do in the Shadows”
Curb.
Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series
“Abbott Elementary”
“The Bear”
“Curb Your Enthusiasm”
“Hacks”
“Only Murders”
Only Murders.
Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series-
“The Crown”
“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”
“Shogun”
“Slow Horses”
“Baby Reindeer”
Baby Reindeer.
Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
“Baby Reindeer”
“Fargo”
“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”
“Ripley”
“True Detective: Night Country”
Baby…Reindeer? How is this in both categories?
