The cast of The Bikeriders exhibit a very wide range of style of efforts at the film’s London premiere. Come with us on a journey as we berate some of them.
Austin Butler in Celine
We can’t say a bad thing about any of this. The boots aren’t necessarily to our tastes, but they work well for the setting and type of film he’s promoting. He’s very clearly something of a theme dresser, but we’re happy to see him get away from the louche disco looks of the Elvis era. If he wants to do a Bonnie and Clyde turn on this tour, we’ll cheer him every step of the way. Our only criticism is that the hair looks over-styled.
Boyd Holbrook
This is terrible, to be blunt about it. None of these pieces photograph well, most of them don’t coordinate well, and the whole look gives off a whiff of don’t-give-a-shit. We realize a film like this one doesn’t necessarily require cutting edge high fashion looks to promote it, although admitting even that sounds like we’re signing off on theme dressing for the red carpet. Our point is that he can go casual for this tour, but there’s a way to do it where it looks like you thought about it for more than five seconds.
Jodie Comer in Vivienne Westwood
This is the other argument as to why the men should be putting in a little bit of effort. She could come out in jeans and boots and a leather jacket if she wanted to. No one would burn her at the stake for it. But she works in a system where expectations and outcomes are managed by presenting herself a certain way at certain times. Anyway, this looks pretty great. The color really sings on her. The straps need to be adjusted and we’d have loved a higher hem, especially when she’s wearing a somewhat heavy pair of sandals, but those are the only quibbles.
Tom Hardy in Gucci
Pfft.
ABOUT THE MOVIE:
Freedom belongs to the fearless. Starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. THE BIKERIDERS is only in theaters June 21. Written and directed by Jeff Nichols.
THE BIKERIDERS captures a rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing. After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy). Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.
