It’s not you we’re mad at, Emma Stone, star of Poor Things and winner of the Best Actress Oscar. It’s your dress. And okay, yes, maybe we’re a little mad at you at the moment. But we’ll focus on the dress.
We don’t hate it, but we can’t bring ourselves to love it either. Mostly it’s the color, which is too pale, too insipid for holding an Oscar. You want to see bold or bright colors, not a dress the color of a mid-century bathroom sink. The peplum is just coming up to the border of ridiculous in terms of its proportions. It’s less an oversized peplum than it is a slightly too small skirt. We hate the flat hair, but that necklace is really well chosen. It’s not a great look to have your dress split down the back for your big moment in front of the world.
