The cast of the long-awaited and much-delayed (thanks to King of the Movies Tom Cruise, who insisted on holding off the release until theaters could rebound from the pandemic) Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One hit the Spanish Steps in Rome for the world premiere. The looks were serviceable. That’s not a read, that’s a fact. There are certain sausage-fest film franchises, such as this one or the Fast/Furious one or the Transformers one, that more or less require all of its stars, male and female, to dress in a style that reads money but doesn’t read too glamorous or trendy. Put on a suit, put on a dress, but don’t show up putting on airs. That’s the style brief.
Cary Elwes
So this is fine. Boring as hell, but fine.
Esai Morales
In terms of real style, the furthest you want to go for an event like this is “Stepped off my yacht momentarily.” We’d say he nailed it.
Greg Tarzan Davis in Brunello Cucinelli
See, now this feels like a bit much. A tux isn’t out of the question, but the time, place, and weather don’t call for velvet.
Hayley Atwell in Givenchy
Also perfectly fine. Not the kind of dress that gets a spotlight post, but it’s extremely flattering and gives a great walking-away effect. Don’t love the wet look hair, however.
Pom Klementieff in Fendi Couture
We give her credit for trying to bring a little edge to the proceedings, but unfortunately, this dress is ugly.
Rebecca Ferguson in Emporio Armani
As fuss-free as a velvet gown in June can get. She playfully lifted her skirt at one point to show the leggings she was wearing underneath, which only tends to support the idea that all of them are being profesh and presentable, but not trying too hard. Her makeup looks odd to us. Maybe it’s more of a night face.
Shea Whigham
It’s giving Father of the Groom.
Simon Pegg in Valentino
It’s a beautiful tux and we love the jewelry. We just wish the pants had been hemmed appropriately.
Tom Cruise in Brioni
For such a fit – not to mention wealthy – man, he has a real knack for making high-end bespoke suiting look a little schlumpy. We salute his youthening regimen, but he’s too old to be sporting such sloppy hair in a semi-formal setting. At a certain point, it stops being boyishly cute and just looks messy.
Vanessa Kirby in Miu Miu
Can’t really argue with any of that. It’s the very definition of a slinky gown. Similar to the other attendees, it’s a fairly fuss-free look – on the surface, at least. She’s kept the jewelry, makeup and hair extremely low-key and just letting the dress (and the body) be the star of the show.
