2023 Cannes Film Festival: Gemma Chan in Louis Vuitton at the MONSTER Premiere: IN or OUT?

Gemma Chan is a fashion goddess who elevates everything she wears and never hits a red carpet looking anything less than gorgeous. Even so, we’re throwing this one out to a vote, just for the hell of it. And also because it’s got a couple of odd details that don’t add up well.

For one, there’s the shape, which makes her look like a ceramic figure or Christmas tree topper. Second, there’s that broad satin trim at the hem, which only adds to the precious feel of the dress. Third, there’s a cape. Fourth, there are paillettes. For a white halter gown, there’s a lot going on. We’re not convinced that a halter and a cape combine well at all. We’re also not crazy about how the skirt marries to the bodice or how visible those darts are. It’s one of those looks that comes off fabulous at first glance, but the details are awkward and it’s possible it only looks good because of the wearer. She’s gorgeous here, but the dress? The dress is a lot.
