Her protestations to the contrary, Cate Blanchett is campaigning so hard for her Oscar that she’s actually going to cause us to lose money, the devious little minx. Allow us to explain. It’s the week before the Oscars and protocol around these parts holds that any actress nominee on a red carpet should probably get her own spotlight post, since interest (and Google searches) in them is at an all-time high. In addition, Aubrey Plaza is at a scorching hot place in her career right now post-White Lotus and would also rate a spotlight post this week for similar reasons. Instead, we are grouping all of these ladies into one post because hard-working, harder-campaigning Good Lady Cate, in an uncharacteristic bit of wackiness, was all over the Film Independent Spirit Awards red carpet, vamping and posing with two of the hottest ladystars in the game right now. We couldn’t just let these shots go by unpurchased by us, so grouped together it is. Cate, Venmo us.
Sure, it all has a touch of strategy to it, but these shots are still charming as hell, brought to you by people whose professional qualifications include charm. We rarely get a chance to say this in our coverage, but after years of documenting and commenting upon the Oscar campaigning game, there’s just no denying that, pressure and politics aside, it just looks like a lot of fun to be an Oscar nominee at the height of awards season. It’s all parties and clothes and celebrations in your honor. Speaking of clothes…
Cate Blanchett in Loewe
Continuing her (perhaps also strategic) season of re-wears, Good Lady Cate wore this ensemble at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. It looks much better this time around. We can’t quite tell why. Did she have it fitted a little better? Anyway, it’s a fun, sharp design and it feels more appropriate for the Indie Spirit Awards than Cannes.
Michelle Yeoh in Gucci
In fairness to Cate, we should point out that hitting the Indie Spirit Awards in a look this hard is also indicative of a lady on the campaign trail. This is perhaps not the color we would have chosen for her, but it’s a stunning dress. Interesting to see how she toned down her jewelry (which is appropriate for the occasion) but chose an uncharacteristically focus-pulling pair of shoes.
Aubrey Plaza in Saint Laurent
This is sharp and hot, but the length of those pants ruins it for us.
