We were talking about Shawn Mendes’s style one time (as we are wont to do now and again) and we can’t remember which one of us said it, but one of us summed up our frustration with him by dubbing him the Banana Republic Pop Star. His style has always been frustratingly bland and office-adjacent for most of the time we’ve covered him. It’s not that we’re super excited about this look (it’s a camel sportscoat fit for an economics professor, after all), but at least he tried to get a little rock-and-roll about it.

Sir, you are a millionaire. America should not be looking at those scuffed soles. It’s all still disappointingly bland, but at least he’s wearing a pendant and showing a little chest hair. It’s a start. He’ll never be a Harry or Machine Gun when it comes to his pop style, but at least he’s dabbling in light rock god fashion.
