If someone asked us to dream up a dress that says “I’m an up-and-coming ingenue and I also deserve serious awards recognition,” then the gold Carolina Herrera mini-dress West Side Story star Rachel Zegler wore to Graham Norton’s show is close to what we’d picture.

Not that we’re trying to claim any design skills on the level of Herrera creative director Wes Gordon; just that a classic ingenue dress is lightly sexy, bright, and ruffly or frilly while a classic awards track dress is as gold as a gal can get away with. As we wrote in our first book, “To win the Oscar, one must become the Oscar.” Granted, we wouldn’t have recommended a belly cutout for a sitdown interview and it sure looks like it’s forcing her to lean forward and keep her hands firmly clasped in front of her, but comfort issues aside, it’s definitely doing the job for her; making her look like a star and keeping all eyes on her. It’s got its problems as a design, but the effect looks like it’s worth it.
