Darlings, there was a veritable bounty of marginally discussable celebrity looks this week and we extend a hearty expression of gratitude to all of the stars who almost tried hard enough. Here’s to you, stars. Now line up for judgment.
Alia Shawkat
She is exactly right to work a sort of Pilgrim Chic look like this, but we wish the hem was either higher or lower.
Gemma Arterton in Christian Dior
Oof. Sorry, but that textile looks cheap as hell and the fit is way off.
Henry Cavill
It’s a beautiful suit and it suits him (pun unavoidable) perfectly, but it’s a bit stodgy.
Hillary Swank
Kind of a glamorous vampire sort of look, which is okay we suppose, but that bust sits really low.
J.K. Simmons
We’ll give him a pass on the hat, but only because it’s him. We wish he’d wear cooler kicks.
Lil Nas X
We love it when someone wears an all-black outfit on the red carpet and understands that it not only has to be interesting, but it should be of as many weights and textures as possible.
Lily James in Miu Miu
This is a pretty good take on the lady tux, but we can’t help thinking sheer black tights (which are trending back) would finish this off perfectly.
Michael B. Jordan in Valentino
Let us never speak of this again, Michael B. Jordan.
Nina Arianda in Maria Lucia Hohan
The design is okay, but that isn’t a great color for her.
Olivia Colman in Max Mara
Enh. Every star deserves a night off if it’s for a good cause. She looks comfy.
Olivia Wilde in Kwaidan Editions
This absolutely should not be working as well as it does, but she looks spectacular.
Ralph Fienes
Not that this looks better on him than it did on Henry Cavill, but it definitely suits him better. We love how certain British actors, when they reach a certain age, go straight for the scarves. It’s like a rite of passage for them. Sort of like American actors and fedoras (see entry for Simmons, J.K.)
Rita Moreno
This is so charming, but we think only she can make it work.
Sofia Carson
The boots make the look.
Taraji P. Henson
We love the color blocking and the attempt to marry an activewear vibe to a formal gown, but that flounce isn’t working.
Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton in Prada
That is an absolutely beautiful gown. He looks fine – and very happy.
Tony Hale
Tony, we don’t expect much from you, but we definitely expected better than this.
