Miss Laverne came out to make a statement – and we’re not referring to her fashion for once. Having been passed up after her fourth Emmy nomination, she gamely came out to announce an award for someone else, but rather than smile and unconvincingly state that it was an honor just to be nominated, she got a little introspective and even a little angry, quoting from Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem.” “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” We think she left herself an opening to pass it off as a bit, but when she got censored for saying she was presenting the award to “someone who probably didn’t effing vote for me,” it sounded pretty real to us – and it seemed kind of silly for the network to censor it. But we suppose real expressions of emotions other than gratitude are to be considered off the menu on Emmys night.
In other, not entirely unrelated news, she utterly slayed her look:

We didn’t realize until this morning that it’s a sheer jumpsuit and not a gown with sheer panels. Love the slight oddness of the design, as well as the Egyptian hieroglyphic motif, but we especially love the short gray wig and sort of gothy makeup. It added up to a look of pure dark fantasy and we love it so much more than the Beyonce styles she’s tended to favor in the past. She looks fantastic.
