Nigerian-American designer Buki Ade was inspired to start her own swimwear line after shopping for a swimsuit on vacation and realizing how little creativity let alone how bereft of African design aesthetics the average brands were. She launched her line, gathered a huge social media following and today her swimwear has been featured in Vogue, Glamour, and that Mount Olympus of ladies’ swimwear, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Her designs are bold, sexy, colorful, and the very definition of eye-catching. No one who wears one of her suits can expect to go unnoticed. In fact, they’re far more appropriate for turning heads than they are for getting wet, but that’s pretty much the point of them.
