Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Gucci at 2015 Golden Globe Award Season Celebration

Posted on November 21, 2014

Ah, the leather dress. Many a young ladystar falls prey to its siren call, only to have the cruel truth reveal itself to them: virtually none of womankind was ever meant to wear a leather dress. If fashion was a video game, then the leather dress represents the highest possible difficulty setting.

So of course this one nails it on her first try.

Bow down, mortals.

We’ll say she had a leg up in the competition, based on the fact that this is an unusually pretty leather dress. The color looks amazing on her and it actually fits her better than the runway model. And as per uzh, her head is glorious. Loving the hair; loving the eye makeup.

Disappointments: super-matchy makeup case clutch and silver pumps, which feel a little … expected.

It’s like a ruffled old-timey butcher’s apron and I absolutely love it. Such is the power of Lady Gugu.

  • Beto

LOVE her hair (and with a smile to kill for). Unusual color for a leather dress and surprisingly fresh, clutch is just ok, shoes are meh

    • gabbilevy

My obsession with her hair knows no bounds. (My heart might have stopped a fraction of a second when I saw the thumbnail.)

      • Constant Reader

        Her hair is glorious!

      • SketchyCat

Her hair is what my frizzy, tangled mane of curls looks like in my dreams. Le sigh…

    • evave2

A believably wonderful smile goes such a long way to making a celebrity beautiful (and I include Tom Hiddleston in that, he always looks so happy to be there when they are taking his picture); I have enjoyed looking at every photo you guys have been posting of her lately.

Question: is this an Oscar buzz pole dance or just I am beautiful and wonderful, please hire me pole dance? Because put this woman in some more movies so I can look at her and hear her dulcet tones.

      • I think it is an “I am beautiful and wonderful, please hire me” pole dance, or a “Baby, look at me and tell me what do you see? You ain’t seen the best of me yet” poledance – looks like she’s only had one film out this year and it does not look like Oscar buzzworthy.

    • evave2

Her smile is a true power in the universe.

  • Noah

Her perfection is just not fair.

    • conniemd

I was thinking rust or burgandy, but orange is perfect. Y’rite.

  • GeoDiva

It really helps that the dress in not black. But I agree, she looks amazing. I remember her when she was in that husband & wife spy couple show Undercovers a few years ago. I glad she is finally getting recognized.

  • I will say that she comes as close to leather dress wearing success as anyone could (with the possible exception of myself, but that’s another story). The fact that she is so beautiful (and her hair is a total WERQ here) helps. But I don’t totally 100% love this. I think the wearable leather dress is like the unicorn.

    • You have to be a virgin to catch one?

  • carlatheviking

I would have gone with a clutch drownin in oversized rhinestones, I think. Even after looking for five minutes I’m not sure about what shoes I’d do. Perhaps DKNY slit black leather booties?

  • Abbey Rogue

Coral pumps would have moved me to tears; the fembot shoes aren’t doing it for me.

ETA: perfection all over everything elsewhere. Prim leather.

  • She looks great, that is an adorable dress but I kind of wish she would’t have matched her eye makeup to the dress color. Everything is just too monochromatic for me.

  • CelandineM

Usually I despise leather dresses because they look so heavy and cause horrible uniboob. This dress has a lightness to it and looks fresh. Never thought I would say that about a leather dress. Also her hair and makeup are fabulous. Cooler shoes and this would be a total Werq.

  • Lilah

I think other actresses can’t pull off leather dresses because they generally tend to have large chests which take it straight to tacky town.

    • Abbey Rogue

I just got a terrifying flash of Kim in this. It was horrible. I think I need a cocktail to recover from said flash.

      • marlie

Go ahead and start the Lounge early. No one would blame you.

    • sweetestsith

Well, that and they tend to choose SKIN TIGHT leather dresses. I get it, sexy-sexy is the idea, but it almost never works. Gugu chose well…

  • Sarah

The metaphor y’all used is particularly apt, because were fashion a video game, many women would indeed BE clad in leather. Apparently the key to looking cute in leather dresses is to wear leather dresses that do not look in any way like leather dresses (and also be a very cute lady with cute hair and a nice smile)

  • I think I’d have done suede booties. But her hair is so divine.

  • sugarkane105

That stray fold in the front is driving me a little crazy. But she does look delightful, it’s a very cute dress that I never would have guessed was leather at first glance.

  • R.A.

My cow-loving self does not approve. There are so many wonderful leather substitutes – why are we still making clothing out of living creatures?

    • Abbey Rogue

Because leather is murder and murder feels uhmaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

      • R.A.

I couldn’t tell if you were being sarcastic or not, or making a reference to something else altogether, so I googled “murder feels uhmaaaaaazing,” and then realized that a) I am at work and b) I just googled “murder feels amazing” thanks to autocorrect. I am waiting for them to come and cuff me and escort me out. ETA: Guys, if I actually get fired for this, are there any BKs willing to take me in?

        • jilly_d

        • Abbey Rogue

It’s a play on a Denis Leary quote, “because meat is murder and murder tastes pretty fuckin’ good.” It may not be Denis Leary, but according to my 10th grade English teacher it is, and that’s good enough for me.

          • R.A.

Thank you. Just watched the bit on Youtube. I’d beg to differ, but I appreciate his sentiments about colon :).

    • Just today I saw a picture of two cows that (supposedly) had been washed, blown dry and had their hair all puffed out. It was the cutest pic of cows I have ever seen!

      • R.A.

Oh, where!? I would like to see fluffy cows 🙂

        • originally twitter, but this inspired me, so I searched, easy find. fluffy cows may now be my new favorite thing.

          • R.A.

Oh. My. God. I am in love with them ALL. This may top the pig in a custom-knit hat I saw yesterday (with a pom pom at the tip of each ear.)

      • I just had to look up the pic of the fluffy cows, and I have heartily SQUEEEEd.

    • Lamb & pig leather is nicer.

      • R.A.

Oh please no… I will take my lambs and pigs alive!!

  • MilaXX

Love this! No uni-boob. She looks great! I wish she had a different shoe on but really that’s a minor quibble. Love the makeup!

  • Anna

OF COURSE Gugu gets it right. Not going with the obvious black leather or the more recent horrifying, serial killer flesh-toned leather micro-trend helps a lot.

That face and her hair are just glorious.

  • Keys to success:
Boobs, there are 2 of them
Material color, nothing that looks like the flesh of her enemies
Head game, so very on point.

    • Alyssa

This reminds me of Miss Congeniality: Eyebrows…there should be two!

    • grasshack

Looks great – just not sure why this particular style of dress needed to be made of leather, though – it’s sweet and girly, not “tough”

  • Gatto Nero

The deep V, ruffle detail, and tailored waist keep this from looking stiff.
    Hair is flawless.

  • NMMagpie

The expected be damned! She is schooling everyone in serving, people.

    • Denise Alden

Agreed! Where has she been all my life? I adore this chick 🙂

  • Janet B

Wearing a leather dress that fits is a very good thing.

  • You know, if I hadn’t been told it was leather I’m not entirely sure I would’ve noticed. She’s that stunning.

  • boweryboy

Not in love with the dress but I like the shoes, and I’m just happy someone is finally wearing a Fall collection dress in the fall.

  • SewingSiren

    Even trumps the runway model.

  • I’mACoolMom

seriously, where has this woman been all my life?? I am officially Gugu-Mbatha-Awed…

  • another_laura

Many things are helpful here: it’s not black, it’s not designed to be super tight in the hips, she’s wearing the right size. I dislike the color of the dress and the silver accessories, but serious kudos to this woman for getting this so right!

  • Darcy H

That poor model is crying in a corner somewhere.

  • Courtenay P

I feel like Gucci has been secretly KILLING IT lately

  • bluefish

She is impossibly chic, isn’t she? Silver shoes? Hurrah. Big fan of silver shoes.

  • jencapture

Gugu is definitely wearing this leather dress well. At the same time, the structure and sweetness of this particular number is a bit unorthodox and less “dominatrix leather” as we are accustomed the seeing ladystars attempt. As a counterpart to Gugu, I would also like to cite Keri Russell’s greenish-black leather dress from last year, which was a definite high point in ladystar leather dress wearin’.

  • LaSylphide

Pretty dress in a pretty color, and her posture is good, which goes a long way toward selling the dress. She looks lovely.

  • Maria Mercedes Arevalo Espinoz

Lovely, and I want that ring!

    • jspark

Thank you yes! That delicate pearl tagging along for the ride. I love it, is light and feminine but anchored with a strong metal base. For me the ring made the outfit.

  • marlie

This almost makes ma want to cry (out of happiness). THIS is how I want my hair to look when it’s natural. I need to figure out what her people do and what products she uses. I think her makeup is perfect, and I don’t think I’ve ever liked a leather dress as much as I like this one; it’s really, really pretty. I’m not even mad at the matchy accessories, though I would have loved shoes in a royal blue color to pick up the undertones of the dress.

    • SketchyCat

Preach, sister! Is there a hair stylist BK in da house who can help us learn to have Guguesque gasp-worthy curls?

  • Joanna B

    Much better than the model

  • What is she in? She’s so pretty and I’m intrigued about her acting.

    • SketchyCat

I’ve only seen her in the movie Belle, and I thought she was excellent in it. But then, I’m a sucker for period films. And British history. And anything with Tom Wilkinson.

(ETA: At some point I plan to see some of her other work.)

  • The color is divine on her.

  • Sophie

Love the hair and the ring. The dress looks more like plastic than leather, which isn’t good even on Gugu.

  • anotherkate

She is just so pretty. That makeup is PERFECT. And I wish I had hair like that, but curls were just not meant to be.

  • Shelby

I’d have given her a werq if the shoes were better.

  • BrooklynBomber

I hate leather dresses. Except this one. She looks FABULOUS.

  • jilly_d

I would have preferred an oxblood accent for this, but I’ll take it. That’s a great little dress.

    • ashtangajunkie

I love the idea of oxblood accents for this!

  • Perfection.

  • Chuck Barthelme

No idea who she is, but yowza!

  • livesarah

Don’t like the colour at all. Don’t like the entire garment, actually, but the colour really does nothing for her.

  • decormaven

I’d like to have seen a cuff for adornment and something other than a metallic shoe. She looks great and her hair game is amazing.

  • smh4748

Her hair. Sigh. I think I’m going to start a “Gugu’s Hair” Pinterest board.

  • Chelsea Claire Drucker

Those Gucci boots belong with it. I want her to be wearing them!

  • ashtangajunkie

Oh, I love this dress. The neckline is perfect – sexy, but without the presentation of cleavage and sternum we’re so used to.

  • papillon

She just looks so genuinely happy to be there. Ah, the enthusiasm of new stars. That colour looks fabulous on her and her hair looks amazing.

  • FibonacciSequins

Very nice. I assume the color is more accurately represented in the runway photo; otherwise I have to take points off.

  • EarlyXer

I don’t expect “ladylike” and “leather dress” to coexist on the same person, but there’s a first time for everything. Really pretty.

  • snarkykitten

It helps that the dress isn’t vacuum sealed to her body & isn’t the color of your granddad’s old recliner.

  • quiltrx

Yes, the unusual shape and unusual color in leather-dress-land are really working in her favor. Pretty.

  • This was the time for OXBLOOD accessories. Also I just like saying OXBLOOD. Possibly because I’ve been watching Dragonball from the very beginning and it makes me think of Chichi’s dad the OX KING. /nerd

  • fromanotherplanet

    She’s pretty…pretty forgettable. NEXT!

  • numenah

Smirking, grinning, or in repose, this woman’s face dazzles. The dress is one of the few that does sternum right with its narrow Vee, and Gugu has the perfect chest for it, neither bony nor busty.

  • John Vernon

I feel that TLo are over-praising this girl.

  • Drunken Housewife

She look so much better in this than the model. Some fashion designer should use her as a muse.

  • mickiemonkey

So chic. Love the shoes with this. She wins.

  • E. D.

Not 100% behind the shoes, but a great look.

  • Susan Crawford

LOVE the dress! Leather with real ladystyle is hard to find, and this is perfection. Agree with T and Lo that the clutch and shoes needed a boost – maybe a subtle color contrast in a deeper shade of blue? or a full-on major pop of color? – but as always, she looks just fabulous!

  • Aurumgirl

Dismiss the matchy matchy as much as you want but she looks beautiful in everything, even the leather dress.
