See? This is what we wanted from you, girl.

The super-tight, body-con stuff she favors just a little too much had the effect of making her look like she was working too hard to give herself as “feminine” a shape as possible. But women come in all shapes (as she would know better than most) and we think all women do better when they celebrate the shape they have instead of going to extreme or style-free lengths to obscure, alter, or cast an illusion over their actual shapes. Dress to maximize your assets and minimize your flaws, absolutely.  But sometimes, a square-shouldered lady, when she’s presented with a beautiful gown that not only shows off those shoulders but barely skims the rest of her body, which she tends to like to show off (i.e., the exact opposite of how Laverne normally dresses) should take a risk and embrace it. The focus here is on her neck, shoulders and breasts. She tends to put the focus on her legs and cinched waist. This is so much better for her, at least in a setting like this. Yes, she looks large and square-shouldered, but she also looks soft and sexy at the same time. She could’ve shown up in a mermaid gown and she might even have rocked it, but she looks so elegant, feminine and pretty here that we hope she keeps returning to this well.

And the hair pulled away from her face had a LOT to do with it too. That’s another lesson we hope she’s learned. Also a personal best on the makeup.

This was flat-out breathtaking. She was one of my favorites last night.

    • Dino Bonačić

  • Lindsey Romain

    Fucking beautiful.

  • Eva_baby

Go head, Miss Laverne! That is some Lady of the Manor shit right there. Definitely my favorite look of hers.

  • RescueMe23

Finally! She looks great instead of trying to hard..

  • Anna

Why yes, I DID float onto the red carpet on a seashell, why do you ask?

  • smh4748

Some titscrepancy going on, but that’s my only quibble. I LOVE that she finally did something different with her hair, and it paid off in spades!

    • Melissa Brogan

Yes. I love this look but I’m ever so slightly distracted by the girls. Boob tape mishap, maybe?

      • Trent

Yes, we’re clearly in the minority (and I luv her), but the boobage is a little too in-your-face for my taste. Raise the neckline a wee bit, and it’s perfect, IMO.

      • FuhUgh

Two grapefruits in a tote bag.

        • holla

at least it’s not a sparkly tote bag as per usually. this is a step forward.

  • NBG

Lovely. Great dress with great styling. Love the earrings and I want that ring!

And can she give some of the other ladystars out there classes on posture?

    • Skippymom1

Can she start with Lena D? I can only imagine how much better the clothes Lena wears and her look would be if she could stand proud like the lovely Ms. Cox.

      • demidaemon

She has a statuesque queenly quality here that even I want to emulate.

      • Anna

Designers should just quit giving Lena Dunham clothes, full stop, and work with Laverne instead.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Laverne’s hairstyle with this gown is so flattering, and very classic with such a classic gown.

    • Kitten Mittons

Yes. Classic, and sophisticated. I have no quibbles. Excellent choice, honey.

      • teensmom99

I think it’s not a coincidence that one of her best looks ever is with the hair up. Of course the dress is divine for all the reasons the uncles have pointed out.

        • Kitten Mittons

Love seeing her hair up for a change. I liked her side-swept hair from yesterday’s post, too, but this style is perfect for the dress.

  • Emily Dagger

    Oh. My. God.

It’s like she just stepped out of a Parthenon frieze or something. Wow.

    • sugarkane105

I would just like to take this moment to acknowledge that the bitter kittens are some of the most well-read and eloquent on the internet. Nowhere else would this comparison be made. And I totally agree! Go Laverne.

      • Lisalady161

Yep, briiliant BK minds think alike. I saw her in the CNN photo gallery and thought to myself, “Laverne honey, inside every woman is a greek goddess, and you just found the right gown to let yours shine in. Brava.”

        • Skippymom1

I love your comment x10. Greek Goddess indeed.

      • 1964edithgrove

One of the best things about this site.

      • smayper

And for extra points, she spelled frieze correctly. My heart is filled with joy.

        • Wendi126

I know. It’s rare for a bk to make spelling and grammar mistakes. I noticed that a long time ago and no trolls!

          • Me Again

I think T-Lo work incredibly hard to delete troll comments quickly. And because they are so good at it, the trolls get discouraged, which makes this one of the only websites where I enjoy reading comments.

          • Sophie

And as a bonus, it allows non-native speaker BK to learn new vocabulary spelled correctly. I had no idea “frieze” was spelled that way in English.

    • MissAmynae

I thought of the Muses in Disney’s Hercules. All fierce women, which Miss Laverne is epitomizing here.

  • SophieCollier

Stunning! I hope she takes more risks as well.

  • imperfectlaura

The puckering to the side of her bust is my only complaint. But this is fab.

  • deelup

  • HeatherMcIlrath

goddess realness! so happy for her and her success!!

  • Glam Dixie

I feel like there should be a happy medium where she looks soft and lovely but not like a linebacker and this isn’t it. Edited to say, I do like this a lot, just feel like there must have been options that accomplished both things.

    • I agree. I actually don’t love this look on her. Not the hair, not the make-up, not the dress. I hate to say this, because I don’t want to be insensitive, but I think this is the least *truly* feminine I’ve ever seen her. Normally, I see her and I think “gorgeous woman!” and then I remember her story and am like “unbelievable!!” This look does the opposite for me. (I really hope that isn’t insensitive. I will think for a minute and delete if it is.)

      • DonnaL

So you’re both trying to say — without actually saying it — that she “looks like a man.” (Comparing a trans woman in any way to a “linebacker” is one of the more unfortunately common ways of expressing that sentiment.) Suffice it to say that I disagree. She doesn’t look anything like a man.

And what’s so “unbelievable” about a trans woman being gorgeous? Ugh.

        • Glam Dixie

I have described several different women on this site as having linebacker shoulders when wearing something that makes them look even broader than they are so why should this be different?

          • DonnaL

It’s different *because* it has a particular significance when used to describe trans women. You could be a little more sensitive to that.

          • Because those kind of gendered body descriptions are often offensive to transgender people.

          • Glam Dixie

Well then my apologies, my aim is to treat her like every other woman appearing on this site, not navigate trans landmines.

          • DonnaL

Right — those hypersensitive trans women; all you have to do is describe one of them with an inherently male descriptor, and they get all upset! It blows up in your face! As unpredictably as a landmine! How could anyone possibly have guessed!

          • There are no landmines. It’s really not that hard to describe people’s bodies using the language they prefer.

          • Glam Dixie

            My comment has been edited

          • JD

I would just say that it might be hard for someone who isn’t transgender to know what may or may not be offensive, particular when it’s a comment that many of us use to describe our own broad shoulders. Additionally, while most on this site are on top of their pop culture, it’s quite possible someone might not even realize Laverne is transgender! I think we should assume the best of others’ comments – and to gently point out that a comment could be taken negatively to raise awareness.

        • Oh, no! I didn’t mean “unbelievable” about a trans woman being gorgeous. AT ALL. I just meant, like “UNBELIEVABLE!!” at HOW gorgeous she is! Like, it’s unbelievable that anyone is that gorgeous! I’m editing my comment so as not to reflect that, my apologies.

          • DonnaL

            Thank you!

      • Glam Dixie

I don’t mind the hair and makeup, it’s very soft and pretty but the dress is where my problems begins. I like the soft and floaty look for her better than the body con stuff but I don’t think this was the right dress.

        • demidaemon

I actually think that the harder one tries to deemphasize something (such as broad shoulders0, the more omnipresent it becomes to others. Actually going for and highlighting these features, as is the case here, actually gives them a regal beauty that wasn’t present in her more body-con outfits.

          • Glam Dixie

Interesting way of looking at it, there’s no denying she looks regal here and she certainly hasn’t previously.

  • Kent Roby

    Gor. Geous.

  • bhl_1123

The hair. The hair. The hair. THIS makes all the difference in the world. I was so over her stick straight, middle part. She looks absolutely stunning!

  • Kate

She looks great in white, and I like everything except the bustal area. Too boobulous.

  • Another Kate

Her head is gorgeous, and the profile is truly regal — whoever said that she looks like she just walked out of the Parthenon (below) is spot-on. From the front, it’s kind of CHECK OUT MAH BEWBS, and that takes it down a notch for me. Still, I’m enjoying her new, softer look — in the past, some of her outfits have led me to suspect that she’s channeling her inner Vegas cocktail waitress, but this suits her better.

  • Dany

  • Kirstin McAulay

OWNING the carpet in regal style…. Wonder Woman incarnate in royal dress…

  • Beto

Wow, what a change and departure from other outfit (and repititive style). This style serves BIG on her. Romantic, goddess-y, greek-y and finally another hair style! Kudos for you girl. Also I loved she went all over white, bold decision.

  • @Biting Panda

    WERQing that Best Ever!!

  • Daisy Walker

Soft was the first word I thought of as well. And I think it softens her shoulders. Great neckline for her, especially with the up-do.

    • Sophie

Yes! I didn’t think her shoulders looked particularly broad here, and she is really showing them off with the neckline and hair here.

  • Sarah

Bow down to the Queen of the Red Carpet.

    • demidaemon

      The Hera of the RC!

  • H2

  • Coleen

I think the word I am looking for is “sublime.”

  • Sofia

this is a werq if i ever saw one.

  • J.W.

    How pretty.

  • pamplemousse

    Definite personal best.

  • bunnydiet

    She looks like glamour!

  • S-k-s

Am I the only one distracted by the left breast? It seems deflated or askew or something.

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

They’re definitely askew and a little too pulled together and puffed out, in my humble opinion. I think it Kardashian-ed the look.

  • OffToSeeHim

She’s got a weird titscrepency in that first picture. In all the pictures, in fact. And I really don’t like that ring.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

  • NMMagpie

She shut it down in this outfit. Completely lovely.

  • Summer’s Eve Freshness. Gorgeous.

  • queeniethebold

Not only a designer gown, but also a CUSTOM designer gown. Top-of-the-line designer jewelry. You have made it, Miss Lady. And you deserve every last bit of it.

i think she looks divine, absolutely divine. And she looks so incredibly happy! She knows she looks sensational!

    Love her to pieces.

  • LeelaST

Not a fan for exactly the reasons stated, plus the unnecessary boobage. Very unflattering to my eye. Hair & makeup and the rest of the gown are beautiful.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She looks great. The hair is simple, but styled (none of this “messy bun” foolisness here), the dress fits beautifully, and she looks graceful.

  • LibKat

    Slow-clap standing ovation.

  • Miriam Foster

Bejeweled bedsheet is not her personal best.

  • James

I love that hair, she looks so beautiful. I am not in love with the dress. The boobs area is a bit too much for me plus that horizontal line is making my eye twitch.

  • padma sallah

This is perfect. She looks like a goddess.

  • katetastrophe

Her manicure reminds me of the picks banjo players wear. Never mind how I know that.

  • librarygrrl64

The hairstyle is what finishes this look. Brava.

  • lunchcoma

Well played. She picked just the right moment to take a risk with her style, and it paid off.

  • xmixiex

The baby heads are killing it for me. She looks gorgeous otherwise, I love how soft and elegant it is instead of in your face fierce.

  • Tanya Wade

She looked like she should be on the top of Mount Olympus. Greek Goddess Realness for days.

  • jilly_d

THAT UPDO! Tres elegante! She looks like a dream.

  • Elisabeth Ashley

GLORY! I love the dress, the make-up, the hair, and most of all Laverne herself. I’m so happy to see her looking so elegant!

  • Tracy_Flick

Hair and makeup are FLAWLESS. Let’s see the shoes, lady!

  • Akemi

    Love love love this.

  • colleenjanel

    LOVING photo #6!!! GORGE!!

  • CatLady

Goddess gowns really suit her. She looks so regal.

  • Abbey Rogue

When I saw Laverne, my eyes glistened, and I got really emotional. She is EMBRACING her femininity. This is more Cate Blanchett than Sofia Vergara, and I LOVE IT!

  • ampg

She looks amazing, but it seems I’m the only one who doesn’t like this hairstyle. Up was the way to go, but I think this particular updo just makes it look like her roots need touching up.

    • Imasewsure

I think it’s just such an improvement over her typical hairstyle that we are giving her the Attagirl…. plus it’s very pretty on her but I do agree about the color… that’s the next little baby step for our gurl (and for Bey Bey, etc)…

  • evave2

And I appreciate she looks so HAPPY to be there. The dress gives her confidence but SHE just seems happy herself. Lovely.
    Oh I like her nails.

  • Wink

This hairstyle really works for her. Soft and pretty (hair and makeup) is definitely the way to go. Beautiful job!

  • ashtangajunkie

Completely gorgeous. An absolute goddess. I love that it accentuates her shoulders. They’re spectacular.

  • sojo

  • B_C_J

She has beautiful posture. She looks gorgeously serene.

  • Michele M.

Her makeup and hair are flawless!

  • Mori Rene

she looks like some sort of ethereal goddess gliding over the red carpet. like Hera coming down from mt olympus.

  • formerlyAnon

What can I say? I love a strong shoulder on a woman. Whoever dresses her (or she herself) has a good eye. I don’t always love her outfits, but they never work against her body to make her look awkward or less attractive. IMO, of course.

    • Me too. When Charlene of Monaco gets dissed for her shoulders I don’t understand it – her shoulders are stunning! As are Laverne’s. In fact, the only part of this look I don’t like are her nails, which I think look a bit tacky. Brilliant choice of jewellery. As Lady Montdore said “A woman of my age needs diamonds near her face, to give sparkle” (my favourite bit about that is it works at any age…)

  • Jose R. Medina

Marc Bauer did a girl good !

  • Sonia Perez

Love this!! Only small issue with how the breasts appear “uptight” and they don’t quite go with the flow of the dress. Other than that, STUNNING!

  • Bob Loblaw

I almost like all of it, except there’s a little too much boob for me. Bring the v up a half inch and the sides a half inch and it would be perfect. I think the gown is made for someone with a smaller chest. Looks great with the neck and shoulders.

  • marlie

This is outstanding! Absolutely a “WERQ.” Everything is perfection. I said yesterday that I think I prefer the “soft and pretty” Laverne to the “sexy and fierce” Laverne, and this totally reinforces that. She looks almost ethereal here. The shape of the dress, the softer makeup and the up-do are all perfect.

  • jenno1013

I cannot get over how much I love the jewels on her clavicles…that takes the prize for detailing. And while I thought hair-covering-ears looked dowdy on Michelle Dockery, on Laverne it complements the Grecian effect of the dress beautifully.

  • julnyes

Look at that face! She is lovely and everything about this look is working in my opinion.

  • AnnaleighBelle

That face though. She’s just so serenely beautiful.

  • FibonacciSequins

She looks so lovely and happy here. Attagirl!

  • smayper

I love her broad shoulders! They should be celebrated, as should Michelle Obama’s arms and Allison Janney’s height.

  • smayper

Also, she is hitting the target at which Angela Basset was aiming. The goddess-in-white one.

  • SugarSnap108

    Regal as hell, madame.

  • kim bunchalastnames

    YES! she reads you!

  • Kathie

    Beautiful!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE.

  • Lee

That last shot took my breath away and made me smile a huge smile. Brava darling!

  • GORGEOUS! Well done, Miss Laverne!

  • KendraMR

Just lovely. Personal best all around.

  • LadyVimes

Soft, elegant, beautiful. The hair makes it IMHO, but the dress is stunning on her as well.

  • TheGrandSophy

Her hair looks beautiful looped back and fits the Grecian air of the dress. The side ways view is wow! Really love the beautiful clasps too. Her posture also makes the gown look even more elegant.

    • Qitkat

I notice posture on the red carpet more and more. It makes such a difference. LD, I’m looking at you child.

  • Janet B

  • WERQ, PERSONAL BEST, ATTAGIRL. You flaunt that regal-ass look, miss Laverne!

  • SistaT

    YAY!!! She looks glorious!
As a broad-shouldered lady myself, might I say WERQ! Embrace those strong shoulders – they are to be envied. Also? Yes, ma’am on the booty. Yes.

  • Qitkat

Beautiful, but I preferred her in the Donna Karan gown. Pure white is certainly stunning on her.

  • Judy_S

    Her bearing is so regal.

  • Jennifer Bober

Absolute knock-out! She looks so elegant and classy. There’s no, “I have to prove I’m really a gorgeous woman.” It’s all “I’m gorgeous, I know it and your adoration, while appreciated, changes nothing.”

  • Preach it, Uncles Tom and Lo…Preach it. Lady is rocking it here.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

She looks lovely. That dress is amazing. Her hair is almost perfect. And yes, we see that giant honking rock on your finger!

    She is so inspiring.

  • boweryboy

    Yes, gurl! Yes! Perfection personified.

The past 24 hours at TLo Opinionating Central has made me feel like a kid on Christmas morning with all these posts. I can’t keep up!

  • Raspberry2012

Lovely! Understated, which is what she needs, classic, flattering, gorgeous.

  • frannyprof

I love a softer look for her. Her hair and face are amazing.

  • Cynica

You WERQ that drop-dead elegance, Miss Lady! You are a goddess.

  • MoHub

Elegant. I hope this becomes a habit.

  • Yoshio

Just give me the aquamarine and diamond ring. Thx!

  • MEO

i just can’t take the plastic discs …..

  • Adrianna Grężak

Some of the best eye make up I’ve seen in a while

  • TinaBelchersawkwardmoan

Oh my god, her hair up like that is 10,000 times the right choice. Friggin’ devastatingly gorgeous.

  • Kaonashi

She looks great! Love the little touches (like the striped manicure and ring) and the way her hair is styled. This is the best I’ve seen her look.

  • stubbornthoughts

Classy as fuck. And her face has never looked so beautiful – which is saying something since her face is sooooo beautiful.

    • Mr. J.

      Well said.

  • SierraDelta

    HATE the nails.

  • decormaven

Beauty that shines from within. Brava, darling.

  • NinjaCate

THE HAIR IS AMAZING. I hope she starts styling it more. The hair and makeup are definitely personal best in my book and the dress looks stunning on her. Column of radiance. And the profile shot is magnificent.

  • KinoEye

That next to last shot is everything. “What, this old thing? I just found it lying around the house, dahling.”

  • amanda lynn

beautiful. love the soft hair. …but all i can look at is the lopsided implant. is that horrible of me?

  • alyce1213

Sixth pic down, with her hand out, is giving me life. I love this on her, she’s gorgeous, it’s a huge fashion step.

    • gloriana232

      UGH RIGHT love the hand

So pretty! Love the little wings of hair. Her smile is radiant.

  • Glammie

Glad to see an updo, nice change from the long-hair swoop. Whole look is just a major step up in sophistication.

  • Susan Carson

great color, great lines, loved everything except i thought the v neckline was too broad for her equipment, that spoiled the look for me when trying to go polished and chic.

  • kategs

I’d kill for those shoulders! She looks so elegant.

  • wontons

Oh, this is perfection. Look at that hair. Those cool embellished nails. Just stunning. (In fact, all the OITNB women brought it last night except for Laura Prepon, bless her heart.)

  • She looks so beautiful.

  • prettybigkitty

    Shoulda been a WERK!!

  • Jacob Bowen

“DAMN!” (followed by MANY snaps, of course) was the only possible response I could have had when I first saw her. She looks effortless, beautiful, and SO classy!

  • PinkyK

    She’s one Classy Lassy!

  • suzq

I’m meh on the dress. It’s the color that turns me off a bit, not the shape. The hair and make-up, though, are perfect. Nice styling.

  • vitaminC

Sigh. Unfortunately, most photographers don’t take the time to balance dark-skinned people and light clothing so there’s detail in both. She looks like a floating head and arms in many of the photos, which is a damn shame, because I can see just enough to know she was breathtaking in person.

    • It’s not a situation where the lighting can be adjusted for each subject.

      • vitaminC

True (kinda), but the camera RAW files have loads of contrast adjustments for post-production. These red carpet images are just shoot and upload, though, to beat the competition, so they don’t take the time to do the kind of fine tuning needed by off-white people. Photo geek here, so forgive the tech digression.

        • demidaemon

No, it’s interesting, because I’ve always wondered if there was any post-production after a RC (always assumed there wasn’t), and it’s always nice to have a theory confirmed.

          • vitaminC

Definitely not. Lupita has the same “problem”, which is ridiculously easy to fix by sliding a few cursors in Photoshop. They can’t do that because of the volume of images and the timeliness factor.

  • somebody blonde

She looks great, especially since her hair is out of her face!

  • gracedarling

If she’s smart (and by all accounts she is – very) she’ll take her style tips from Uzo, who has a similarly broad and athletic figure and dresses to flaunt it. This is a bit too much ‘BOOBS!’ for my taste, but it so lovely to see her, as you say, embracing the figure she’s got. She’s smoking.

  • Fred Vaughn

I didn’t think she had a goddess look in her… a pleasant surprise.

  • cocohall

I loved her talking to Guiliana on the Red Carpet about how just last year she watched the show at home by herself and this year she was on the RC dripping in jewels – she is enjoying her moment fully and it was awesome to see her looking so good.

  • Pterodactyl111

    Classy as hell.

  • kassy

She looks absolutely beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look better. I’m just loving this.

  • livesarah

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

Oh yes! Yes! Yes! This!!! She looks soft and pretty – a look I’ve long awaited from her.

  • Killer Bees

    All softness and light. Inspiring.

  • quiltrx

ELEGANZA. Just fabulous, and looking like she is feeling her OWN beauty instead of working extra-hard to make US feel it. Brava.
And, well… imma need ALL that jewelry!

  • MilaXX

It’s pretty and softer than we’ve ever seen her look. I LOVE the hair.

  • Haley Buchanan

The hair and the makeup are absolutely stunning. You WERQ that soft, classic glamour, girl!

  • She is just SO PRETTY. I like that the simplicity of the dress is pretty much a vehicle for that face.

  • Ali2044

Gorgeous and the hair is fabulous. Her larger upper body and the draping of the dress remind me of Renaissance women, she should absolutely not be afraid to show off those shoulders and arms. WERQ.

  • HeyGirlHey683

I’m liking this look on her overall, but I feel like her makeup is still a bit off. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something about her makeup that always looks a bit…grayish(?) to me. Maybe her foundation is a shade or two off? Or maybe it’s the darker lipliner + lighter lipstick? That style of lip always looks a bit dated and/or costumey to my eyes and she seems to use it a lot. I’d love to see her with a bit more conturing in the cheeks, a really well-matched matte foundation, and a single-color lip in some kind of warm pink or matte fire-engine red!

  • Sophie

Hate the manicure, love the rest. That last picture is amazing.

  • Makeup is much softer, very pretty. Great look

  • Fannie Wolston

    luminous! must be in love!

  • AzSportsGirl

She WERQs hard for the money.
