Emmy 2014: Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez

Posted on August 26, 2014

We were totally underwhelmed by this look. And disappointed, because she’s got a long history of doing quiet, classic chic like nobody else in the biz.

It looks like … road work. Like someone’s laying tar over old asphalt or something. We can’t imagine that was the effect she was going for. We could be convinced that this looks more chic somehow in person, but in pictures and on TV it looks drab. Not particularly in love with the sports-bra back or the way the entire skirt just kinda hangs off her.  And that’s the epitome of yoga hair.  It’s yoga instructor hair. And since we’re bitching this much, we might as well take it all the way and say her neutral shoes and nail polish really bug. It’s like she was trying to look drab.

It’s like she dipped her boobs in an oil slick.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

euuuuuugh can’t stop imagining what that would actually be like

      • http://oddsing.com/ oddsing

The age like her is in full bloom.

        • MoHub

I must say I appreciate that she hasn’t had her face :”done.” I hope she will keep it that way à la Queen Helen.

          • SugarSnap108

Yep, I love that her eyes smile, too.

      • FuhUgh

I loved this but, awwwww, now I can’t unsee the oil slick.

      • Dino Bonačić

the worst thing is… SHE WON. :(

        • j.w.

          this. Claire Underwood wasn’t happy.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Haha, my first impression was “sparkletits.”

    • suzq

I don’t mind the dress at all. What struck me like lightning, however, was how gorgeous she looks on The Good Wife. They showed a clip and she just looked so stunning. Perfect hair and make-up. Shouldn’t it be the other way around, where she is playing a professional woman, a bit underdone and then steps out for the Emmys looking knock-out gorgeous? She looks tired and her styling looks rushed–the sort of job I’d do because my first plan for the hair went belly up so I just decided to plop it atop my head and get going.

      • Edie Rose

Tired was my overall impression as well.

      • DebbieLovesShoes

Yup. To me it looks like a hairdo one adopts after oversleeping and rushing off to work….

    • TheGrandSophy

It looks like a badly fitting swimsuit with some sort of weird gauze added.

      • MoHub

I saw honeymoon nightie until I saw the back. Is the band on that plastic?

        • evave2

The back looks like her bra is being featured. Swimsuit IS the look of the bodice. The whole garment looks rumpled, like the gauzy bit was put on OVER a very long slip but it hadn’t been ironed.

The hair and make-up do look uninspired.

          • SRQkitten

When I saw this the day after, it really looked like the back had massive bra band show – in the most unflattering way possible. That alone makes it an out from where I sit.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I HATED the hair. It was definitely gym hair. I kept feeling like maybe? it looked better in person? But the top looked like it was made out of a plastic garbage bag on TV.

    • Dany

I actually love the dress. I think its the hair that’s bringing down the whole look along with the uninspired makeup and bland accessories. This is a dress that needs OOMPHF to go with it.

      • Jaeda Laurez

I really miss her letting her curly hair be great.

        • Abbey Rogue

I read an article recently on HuffPo about this. Where did all the curly-haired actresses go? Juliana Marguiles, Julia Roberts, SJP, Keri Russell, Nicole Kidman, etc. (I might also add: where did the redheaded actresses go?) Everyone has blowouts and stick straight hair now.

          • Vanessa Reyes

As a curly-haired person, I’ve asked this question a few times myself. When I was younger I loved seeing their hair on the screen b/c I felt we had something in common…Keri Russell’s hair in her days on Felicity and Nicole Kidman’s hair in Days of Thunder. I tried the blowouts and straighteners but I felt it wasn’t me but then again I’m not in the public eye. In the end they are all still beautiful women, curly or straight : )

      • Kitten Mittons

I was going to say the same thing. I like the dress for being a little different. The hair is entirely underwhelming, though.

      • SugarSnap108

I don’t love the dress, but absolutely — jewelry, better makeup and ANY hairstyle other than this would hugely elevate the look.

      • Grumpy Girl

On my first take, I loved the dress, but was quite disappointed in the back. And agree with you: it’s that sad hair and makeup that is bringing it all down. I, too, was imagining beautiful, full flowing curls, and a dramatic lip (and nail) color combo to elevate everything. Along with some gorgeous jewelry. But, no. Makes me sad, because it coulda been so much better.

        • Sarah

          (and better shoes)

          • Grumpy Girl

Definitely. And as I look at it more, if it were in a different color, my imaginary version would have been improved, too. Like a beautiful midnight or mulberry, fading to a paler version of that color. OK, so now I’ve convinced myself into a completely different dress and look.

            • sweetestsith

Mulberry fading into a really soft silvery gold, with sapphires or amethyst jewelry and mulberry shoes… And then I would steal it. :P

            • LongTall_Sally

Black fading into midnight or mulberry would also be an improvement — basically, if the underskirt was anything other than that beige-y nude non-color.

      • Nikko Viquiera

Yes! A hair that says “I’m a winner!” because she is! I’m so happy she won. love the Good Wife!

      • MaryMcClelland

I like the dress but the fit is odd. Kinda hangs on her and makes her look a bit like Olive Oyl.

        • jen_vasm

The top, while brief, overpowers the bottom. Maybe if it was not a column, but an a-line or flared, it would’ve been more balanced. And definitely better shoes & hair.

    • BLauDGaspode

Seeing this, it seems like she was sitting around after yoga when she realized she needed to be on the red carpet 10 minutes ago. Slipped on the dress that she bought, but wasn’t quite sure about, but no one has seen her in yet, and ran out the door. Realizing she forgot makeup or accessories, she quickly stopped at a Claire’s and picked up some lip gloss, earrings, and a ring.

    • Gatto Nero

This looks lackluster here, but I thought she looked stunning on TV last night — the epitome of understated elegance and ease.

    • H2

I think the transition in the fabric is an interesting concept with bad execution. It all comes across as very blah.

    • imperfectlaura

The bust has that saggy old lady boob effect that all women love! Also, where’s a picture with her and that hunk of a hubby with her? He’s a big reason why I hope she’s invited to ALL the award shows.

    • Sarah

I thought the top half looked pretty nice on her, when I saw her on screen, but then I saw the bottom. Drab indeed. Hair didn’t really bother me until I see it today in a daytime pic. Yeah, not so good.

    • Tanya Wade

I think, in general, it was a really meh night. I mean, the WTF messes are interesting, but the boring stuff like this just bugs. I saw so much “undone” hair last night, and it all looked ratty and lazy. No exception, here. And this dress is just plain yawn city. You need to set off her dramatic coloring, not neutralize it, for chrissakes!

      • Abbey Rogue

The woman needs teal. TEAL, I tell you!

    • FibonacciSequins

I liked it better last night, in motion.

      • DuBey2

THIS. Today, it appears not to photograph well at all. I can hardly believe its the same dress because the bottom half was mesmerizing when she went up on stage last night.

    • marishka1

I love the dress and it makes her legs look a mile long.

    • Lex

100% disagree. This took my breath away on TV. She nailed sophisticated sexy and it makes her body look killa. This is one of my favorites of the night, hands down. The back straps were gorgeous and the black sequins looked like liquid. Such a great change from her usual safe, matronly choices

      • Sarah

I thought the same thing about the top, but I was a bit disappointed by the treatment of the skirt. I pretty much thought the bust sequins were going to continue down her torso, and I think that could have been spectacular.

    • Adrianna Grężak

It kind of seems like this dress doesn’t hold up to red carpet photography.

      • decormaven

Yes, better on TV camera, not in stills. The gradation of the dress color almost looks as though it is being erased when shown in a stagnant image.

    • julnyes

This dress has scroll down issues.

    • MilaXX

I didn’t dislike this as much as the uncles. It’s just okay.

    • marlie

I really liked the bodice – especially the back – but I didn’t like the fade-to-nude color scheme. If it were all the same color of the bodice, I’d be in love. Also, so much the wrong shoes.

    • Beto

C’mon Julia, you always looks polished and this is not. The sheer effect + the color underneath doesn’t work on you. And the hair style somehow does not combine with this. Okay, you don’t have to win every day.

    • halleygee

Exactly what I was thinking, that is THE yoga hair of all yoga hair! My hair looks exactly like this after hot yoga. Otherwise I do like her gown but not the shoes.

    • ballerinawithagun

I love this dress from the front and side. Like Julia’s, the back of this dress is not for a woman “of a certain age”, cover up that mid waist are and it would have been fabulous! Hair and make-up are underwhelming to say the least.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

The hair is extremely casual for the event.

    • In_Stitches

I loved it. The back is gorgeous and highlights her lean, muscular physique in such a cool way. She looked sexy, sporty, and no-nonsense. I’ll give you the hair though. That’s silly.

    • marishka1

I love the dress and it makes her legs look a mile long.

    • Djwilke

I was thinking “grocery shopping hair” due to the headband, mostly, before I scrolled down. Also, I don’t like the big, fat shiny bra strap thing in the back. It seems to be an after thought.

    • Raspberry2012

I mean, she looks beautiful because she always does. But I agree, my real-life boyfriend’s imaginary girlfriend has done better.

    • Emily S

she needs about 5 lbs on her, even by Hollywood standards. The gauntness is aging her.

      • http://www.746books.wordpress.com Cathy746books

        Couldn’t agree more!

      • mshesterp

And I thought the dress highlighted that fact. It just seemed to hang on her and the color did her no favors. I was completely underwhelmed by the look.

        • carrie

Agree – she needs a booty to pull of something like this. And then maybe still not wear it because it’s an ugly dress.

        • Paula Carr

Yeah, the skirt hung on her and looked saggy. I thought it looked really unflattering last night. It emphasized her boniness.

      • cocohall

I don’t watch the show (It is on my list to binge watch in the future) so I don’t have a good sense of how she regularly looks, but she seemed extremely thin, almost to the point of concern and I wondered if she was indeed battling something. Which might account for the rest of the look not quite hanging together. I had the strong urge to swaddle her up in a big velour robe and feed her lots of pasta. Is she okay?

    • E. D.

I like it, except for her hair.

    • Introspective

this felt like her slip was showing. was totally disappointed.

    • Danielle

The back is pretty great though, and she really seems to love it. But the shoes…the shoes are tragic.

    • Anna

      D for Dreary.

D for Dull and Depressing, Dismal and Deadly.

She is capable of so much more.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Didn’t like this when I first saw it and don’t like it now. I think the hair is way too tight and makes her whole face look uncomfortable. The back of the dress makes me buggy, and the makeup is completely uninspired. Thumbs down.

    • Lilah

I think a bold red lip would have gone a long way with this dress.

    • Mink Carlyle

I think the dress is okay from the front, although somehow it’s making her boobs look saggy. Hate the bra back, though.

    • Miss Ruth

Undersupported boobs and yoga hair, and baby Jesus help me understand what’s going on in the back there.

    • Wink

Someone on her team fell asleep this time. She usually looks so much better.

    • AlisonS

Did she not think she wasn’t going to win and just said fuck it???? I don’t understand any of this. I don’t know if it’s the droopy boobs or the way the dress just hangs there but she looks … frail.

      • demidaemon

Possibly. I don’t think she’s had a good track record at the Emmys, so maybe this year she decided to put minimal effort in because she just figured she’d be sitting through a three hour ceremony and smiling politely.

    • http://www.746books.wordpress.com Cathy746books

She is so, so thin. It isn’t flattering at all.

      • SugarSnap108

The body shaming on this post isn’t OK at all.

        • http://www.746books.wordpress.com Cathy746books

You know, you’re right. I shouldn’t have aimed my comment at her. I just hate to see how beautiful women in Hollywood are forced into a restrictive and unnatural body shape.

          • SugarSnap108

Yep, Hollywood absolutely promotes a very narrow definition of beauty. But there’s also nothing inherently “unnatural” about being thin. I’ve been very naturally thin my whole life, and remarks implying that thin women aren’t “real” women are getting really old. Plus, the comments on this post aren’t lamenting Hollywood’s version of the ideal womanly shape — They’re saying that Julianna’s thinness (which may very well be her natural shape) is “aging” and “not flattering,” and that she “needs a booty.” Not exactly a feminist treatise.

    • ashtangajunkie

The hair offends most. That is not sequined gown hair. It’s 90 minutes of Baptiste hair.

    • bayusc

Why why why a nude shoe with this!?

    • MissFern

Just bring her husband into the picture.

    • Susan Collier

Ha! I liked this, but yeah… what everybody said.

    • Kate

I like the dress, it’s in the more effortless style, a casual elegance that seems everywhere at this LA event–it seems very California specific. Looser, more comfortable, but still elegant. I think her hair is too messy, but she seems rather effortlessly beautiful.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I hate the dress from the back, I HATE those shoes and I really hate the headband. So… it really doesn’t work for me. But her face is so pretty.

    • Patricia Groves Dobrowski

I was kind of okay with it until I saw how it moved when she went up to get her award. Completely awkward in the back – moved against her, not with her. And then I glimpsed the shoes. She probably could have picked an uglier shoe, but didn’t have to try much harder after these.

    • Courtney

I came in late to the Emmys last night because I was at the US Open (watching Venus Williams get menaced by a bee. Funny stuff.) I thought it was business as usual for her when she won, until I saw the back. The back really ruins the dress for me – awkward and not really suited to the dress. Actually, the back looks quite a bit like a number of dresses worn to the senior prom last year, which is not something a red carpet dress should strive for.

    • TAGinMO

      Scroll-down MEH.

    • GillianHolroyd

She always wears her hair up, which I like for formal gowns, but I never like it on her. Especially when she pulls it back into a severe knot at the back. She always looks fantastic on her show though. People say it’s a wig so maybe a wig for formal occasions as well?

      She won? Bravo.

    • ojosazules

A fuller skirt might have have been better? This skinny column is doing nothing for her. It’s inelegant, somehow.

    • Sam Smith

Really do not like the bra strap effect in the back.

    • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

Hate the back. Can’t say she looks bad but, yeah, drab it is.

    • Lisalady161

I like it more the more I look at it. It’s a slinky, sarky little gown and it works for her. But the hair is atrocious.

      • Little_Olive

Yes. It feels like the right take on that godawful (Calvin Klein?) that Gwyneth once wore sans bra.

Except for the back maybe, which is too complicated for its own good.

    • kej841

i liked it until I saw the back

      • KayEmWhy

Yeah, it looked like a saggy diaper when she stood up an walked on stage.

    • Anna

I actually liked this dress when she was onstage – but I thought it would be more flattering on someone else.

    • CB

I wish it stayed that solid, slinky black the whole way down. Combined with the back (which I actually think is, objectively, quite cool and sexy), the nude underlay gives off too much of a lingerie vibe.

    • J.W.

That’s a pretty impressive rock on her left hand.

    • Dreamwr8tr

I like her face, but everything else is “eh” and drab for the reasons the uncles mentioned.

    • Ashleigh

I like the front, hate the back and shoes. She looks great.

    • somebody blonde

That bust was soooooo shiny. I don’t think the rest of the dress is interesting at all.

    • ailujailuj

I bet when the lights are low, this is a gorgeous dress (sans the back & straps). But she’s a little thin and sinewy to wear this style, frankly. And the hair is wrong. I’m going to pretend it didn’t happen.

    • HeisenbergHattie

She was sitting for awhile before she stood up to go get her Emmy. (congrats) The camera followed her to the stage …. My daughter and I both said … “Look how that dress bags & sags at her butt!” Sitting did something terrible to the material. It lost it’s shape and became loose at the stern. Sorry. Unforeseen sitting tragedy.

      • Paula Carr

Yeah, I said the same thing.

    • clatie

I must respectfully disagree. I love this dress. I wouldn’t mind seeing her hair down, but that’s my only quibble.

    • surfergirl70

I like the shape of the front, but the color is awful, and I HATE the bra-like back. I don’t mind the hair, though. She’s gorgeous.

    • prisma

I liked it until I saw the back.

    • Gail

Someone give her a hamburger. She looks like bones in a glittery bag

    • Laura Livingston

I like the dress but the hair is so bad.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I don’t like this look at all. The dress is yes – like roadwork – and she looks like she’s just about to wash her face with that band on her head. I’m not a fan of that hairstyle at all. It’s not elegant. It looks like she put her hair up and is ready to sweat it out in kick boxing cardio class. No. No.

    • FancyPhilly

I kind of like the bottom of the dress, looks like ashes to me which reads cool. Though I don’t think the overall look is working for her. Love the ring though.

    • torajima

I was going to disagree until I saw it from the side. Eh…

    • LibKat

Underwhelming dress turns downright ugly from the back. Step away from the headband.

      • Shawn EH

It all gave her really big head on camera.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I kind of got the idea she thought she wasn’t going to win so she drabbed it up as a form of silent protest. And then ooops, she won.

      • demidaemon

        Murphy’s Law.

    • megohd

I think this dress was made for someone with an ass. Lo and behold, she has none.

    • bessann28

Yeah the hair’s not the best, but actually I think she looks great in this dress.

    • CJ Guziewicz

I like the dress, the makeup and lack of hair make this looking like fitting photos, not the event

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

      She looks tired and dissipated.

    • Akemi

I do not love this, especially the back of it.

    • Qitkat

I’ll bet this looked much better in person than it photographed. The lighting last evening made the back a little bit TOO see-through when she went on stage. However, the sports-bra back does enable her to keep a perfect figure line in the front, but I don’t care for the white underslip more than anything.

    • kim bunchalastnames

the first time i saw her on camera was when she took part in that (sort of painful) Q&A skit, and i wondered, “what the hell is liberty ross doing at the emmys? parlaying those 15 minutes into something more?”

    • kat89

It actually looks like she intentionally kept the nails and shoes neutral and didn’t fuss with the hair because she was at the beach/at a barbecue/doing something with her family all day and didn’t decide until the last possible second what she was going to wear and was getting dressed in 5 minutes while the limo was waiting outside. That’s my theory.

    • paintedfish

i kinda like the dress but hate those klunky shoes and hair.

    • EEKstl

Love the dress from the front, shoes and hair are OUT.

    • Kristen

Amazing earrings and more polished hair, and I think this would have been lovely.

    • Kimberlini

TLo – just show us a photo of her husband and we’ll all be happy.

    • withbreaththatisbated

I hated this look. So much complicated stuff in the back.

    • frannyprof

Yeah… and when she stood up to get her Emmy and we saw the back of the dress, droopy, wrinkly, saggy butt. Not good.

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

I think she looks very cool and interesting but the back should be different somehow. I like that I paused to look but I don’t like that it looks like the backstrap of a big ass bra. I wonder why she wore those shoes? They look like a last minute, “these will work!” switch to me.
      Love her lipstick.
Wish the headband was in a different fabric or even metal.

    • Call me Bee

Oh I like it! Love how the two fabrics play with each other. The only thing that bugs is the back–looks like a bra-back.

    • robin-m

Wow, she is aging fabulously. It is so refreshing to see a 48-year-old star who still can smile and have a full range of facial expressions. Like the dress, actually.

    • DeTrop

I’m with you TLo. Hate that bra-back look and it looks like vinyl. Her hair is too severe and much too dark. I’d kill for that body though.

    • Trickytrisha

I was thrilled she won, but not so thrilled with this outfit. It doesn’t read elegant to me, just wacky.

    • amanda lynn

      She’s looking disgusting ballerina thin.

    • kategs

I love this. think she looks stunning as always.

      • Big Bear

Praise Bast, I’m not alone. I love everything here. Stunning, as you rightly say.

    • wontons

I can’t tell you how much I hate this dress from the waist down. There were some horrible moments last night when she got up to accept her award: saggy butt, too-visible spindly-looking legs…she’s so beautiful that it’s a sin for a dress fabric to treat her that way.

    • Columbinia

I could live with the dress, except for the back, which is ugly. Her foundation and blush often bother me.

    • PinkyK

The back killed it for me….

    • bunnydiet

Looks like a a Hefty bag. What a waste of. A good figure!

    • Therese Bohn

I thought this was stunning, loved the beadwork. Wish the back was simpler, but overall I liked it.

    • B_C_J

I like the dress but dislike the back. The headband should have been diamonds & not a sweatband.

    • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

      TERRIBLE.

    • grasshack

the fabric looks like it got ruined in the wash

    • Kelly

I do a lot of amateur theatre, and for the stage, that’s what you do to your hair so that you can put on your costume wig over it. You don’t care that your own hair looks like s**t because no one is going to see it. You certainly don’t wear the wig band out in public, let alone to a formal red-carpet do. It’s like underwear for your hair. This hairdo brings back all my theatre nightmares — those horrible dreams where you somehow find yourself on stage without your costume and wig. Plus, the bra back just looks sad.

I think she looks better in a dress that’s less slinky, more structured. Also it looks like the dress was put into the fire and then salvaged from the ash tray.

I don’t exactly dislike the dress…with some different styling I think it could have worked. But the way underdone hair and face, combined with all the bare and unadorned skin between face and bodice…well, she just kind of disappears.

She looks like she weighs 85 pounds. I saw her on the stage when she won her Emmy award and all I could think was “eating disorder”.

The dress would look better, I think, on someone who weighed more. On Juliana, it emphasizes — not in a good way — how painfully thin she has become. I think she and i are the same age — 48 — and even though it’s good to stave off mid-age weight gain, you look worse when you’re middle aged and super skinny. superskinny is for teenage models. She looks unwell. Though she’s still beautiful.

Sorry, but you’re completely wrong on this one. LOVED THIS DRESS! A black evening gown that’s interesting and glamorous. It’s ombre without being obnoxious. But I would’ve done different shoes……something metallic? Or a fierce black D’Orsay pump like Jessica Pare had on…

It’s like she rushed out to the Emmys wearing her undergarments and thought – fuck it, I’ll pretend it’s a DRESS! No one will know the difference!
