Zoe Saldana in Valentino at the “Guardians of the Galaxy” London Premiere

Posted on July 25, 2014

Well. This is kind of unexpected. Zoe went the Stepford Wife route:

All she needs is a big floppy hat and a shopping cart to complete the picture.

We like it, though. It’s unexpected. And the girly softness of the dress plays well with her slightly hard edge. Of course it should be noted that she just announced she was preggers with twins, so she’s probably feeling the need to get in touch with her softer side and show it to the world. Attagirl. That’s how you use fashion to tell the world what you want it to know about who you are and where you are.

      MONKEYS

      • StellaZafella

        Actually, I think they’re Marmosets. :)

      • KateShouldBeWorking

It’s difficult to tell since the fabric is so drapey and the images are stylized, but given that the animals 1) have tails that 2) appear prehensile, we’re looking at a type of New World monkey. I’d guess a spider monkey was the model.

Tangental: A primatologist friend of mine disputed the notion I could take a spider monkey in a fight. She thought I could maybe fight to a draw but not to a win. They are the size of house cats; I did not feel powerful after that discussion.

        • TinyDynamo

I saw spider monkey too! Or maybe Capuchin? And that is my favorite story ever. I’d put money on you over a spider monkey!

        • OffToSeeHim

Not for nothing, but this kind of stuff is why I read the comments. You just don’t *get* this on other blogs!

        • Lucía Gavello

You know I have to google “spider monkey fight” this instant, right?

        • Grumpy Girl

How cool to have a primatologist friend!

So, is the idea that the monkeys are small and prehensile, so could basically run circles around you? Or that they start at fighting really dirty (eye jab for the opening), and escalate from there? Then again, I knew a chihauha that took a German Shepherd, so . . .

          • KateShouldBeWorking

IIRC, she said that the prehensile tail – a fifth, controllable limb – would prevent my success. Ergo, I might be able to take a similarly-sized Old World monkey as their tails lack gripping capacities.

            • Constant Reader

Also, aren’t non-human primates, pound for pound, quite a bit stronger than humans? I’m pretty sure a spider monkey could kick my ass. I feel no shame about this.

            • KateShouldBeWorking

Absulutely, yes. Pound for pound, humans are comparatively weaker than non-human primates. The scientific philosophy I subscribe to contends that we make up for our physical weakness by mental acuity – via cooperation, scheming, and tool use.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’m sure it’s the fighting dirty.

        • CommanderA

I see spider monkeys too… And adding on the tangent: I have had close contact with those monkeys, and they are house-cat tiny but incredibly strong, and very agressive when scared or angry. But they can be soooo cute.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I was thinking spider monkey or gibbon.

        • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I cannot count all the ways I love you and want to gay marry you after this comment.

          • KateShouldBeWorking

You’ve struck me speechless and I wish I hadn’t seen this first-thing because the rest of my day is gonna suck by comparison.

      • Michelle

Didn’t notice the monkeys until your comment hahaha. But her look is pretty, especially her hair.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I think that’s quite pretty. The dress has the all over pattern, so the simple hair and face and jewelry is a nice touch.

    • Moocows

Soft flowy dress with…a monkey pattern! I dig it, makes it less stepfordy but I wish she had some bananna earrings.

      • Peri7473

you would have thought that this dress would have been worn during the Planet of the Apes tour!

        • Moocows

Ha! That wouldve been hilariously on point. People just take their pole dances too seriously.

        • lunchcoma

Maybe she called to ask for a raccoon print and got this instead?

    • Jessica Freeman

I would have omitted the ruffle at the arms and chest, but otherwise lovely.

      • Ginmaru

If you took the one off the bottom too then the look would have been sleeker and more polished. But that being said….monkeys!

    • sienna elm

      It looks nightgown-y to me.

      • Sarah

All I can see are my dearly departed grandmother’s curtains.

        • scoobynacks

Your grandmother had monkey-themed curtains? I love her.

    • marlie

She’s pregnant? With twins?? I had no idea.

Anyway, she looks pretty, although I don’t like where the waist of the dress hits her (because I thought it was at a weirdly unflattering spot), but I’ll let that slide, all things considering.

Also, her hair and makeup look great.

      • Moocows

I think she looks really pretty, probably because she has a couple of pounds on her.

      • Judy_S

I had no idea she was pregnant until I saw these pictures. Especially when I noticed she was filling out the dress a little better than the model.
She can use the dress later for curtain material in the nursery, maybe. I really like the way she looks in it, mind you, but monkeys….

        • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

          YES. Reverse Sound of Music!

          • marlie

Reverse Gone With the Wind, too!

            • Qitkat

lol, I just wrote something completely different, but referencing GWTW (before reading your post).

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

She’s pregnant? I must have been under your rock!

      • lundibleu

I thought I’d read that she was pregnant a few weeks back, but then saw some other shots and thought I must’ve been mistaken. So I was looking at the pictures and thinking “hmm, maybe I didn’t misread it and she is preggers”

        She does look great though.

    • Nicole

Awesome print. Don’t kill me but I like it better without the lining.

      • AnguaVonUberwald

I agree! I never thought I would like a transparent flowy dress covered in monkeys more than a non transparent dress covered in monkeys, but there you go. Fashion.

        • scoobynacks

If monkeys are a new trend, I honestly wouldn’t mind. It would entertain me muchly if Allison Williams wore it on the red carpet.

    • Samantha Klein

      She announced it? Where?

      • Courtney

Hello! had it the other day, I think.

    • Denise Alden

I was going to say, “let the pregnancy rumors begin,” but I guess they’re not rumors. I’m always the last to know.

    • Anna

I love the print and her hair, but of course anything is better than the jock strap from the other day. Attagirl.

    • flamants

On one hand, I’m glad she got the skirt lined and didn’t go with the sheer-skirt-over-granny-panties look of the runway. On the other hand, It’s pretty sad that that has to be something we congratulate people for nowadays.

    • Glam Dixie

I think I would like this more if the dress hit her just below the knee maybe. It’s just ok, she looks better in more saturated colors.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

That explains why my first thought was “Your tits look great! Are you preggers?”

Mazel tov, Zoe! It’s clear you’re thrilled.

      • Shawn EH

This looks fun to me, more lighthearted than she usually is.

      • Jacob Bowen

Yeah, her girls are looking SO GOOD!

    • Aidan B

Twins?? I didn’t catch that when I read that she was pregnant. Well her belly’s going to be pretty big soon, so soft, drapey things like this are definitely going to be her friend.

    • AlisonS

I am pretty sure this was made from the same pattern of my mother’s bridesmaid dresses from her 1979 wedding!

    • Wink

I don’t hate it. That’s a huge compliment, considering what she’s been wearing lately.

    • TinyDynamo

I kind of love this! I love that she kept the hair soft and flowy, to match the dress, yet polished. She looks gorgeous!

    • gingerella

Twins are a game-changer, so I expect we’ll see her experimenting with lots of loose and flowy.

    • Belvane

Love it except for the hem ruffles. Those take it into Loretta Lynn territory.

    • http://www.basicallyimcomplicated.com Gabby

This is softest I can ever remember her looking. She looks completely gorgeous, but it’s very outside of her normal style.

    • lunchcoma

I like this. It’s pretty, unexpected, and the playfulness works with the tone of the movie without Maleficent level obviousness. Much better than her previous effort.

    • enchanted216

I was okay with it, until I noticed the monkeys! YIKES!

      • SugarSnap108

See, my reaction went, “Meh … Oh, wait, MONKEYS!”

    • OffToSeeHim

See, I was just going to ask if she was pregnant. Not in a bitchy way, just that this is the kind of dress that people do pick out when they’re pregnant and don’t know how to dress for it, plus I thought there was a baby bump under there.

    • therealkuri

I think I’d like the monkey print a lot better on a simpler dress.

    • PeggyOC

I just can’t with the nightgown hem. If this were shorter, a more a-line, maybe this would be more fun. Now it just looks like Lanz of Salzberg’s new Red Carpet line.

      • Mr. J.

        Nightgown hem….yep.

    • https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Farmhouse-Store/95951940388 Bill Curtis

Well done. The first thing I thought when I saw her in that dress was, “Is she pregnant?” Not because she looks big or anything. It’s just such a style 180 for her. Mission Accomplished.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

It should definitely be marketed as a “pregnancy announcement” dress.

    • Janet B

Am I the only one who doesn’t like her hair? It’s just too girly. Or something like that.

      • marlie

I *LOVE* her hair. I WANT her hair, like, desperately.

        • Jaeda Laurez

you can buy it. She does lol.

          • marlie

Hahaha, I know it’s not all “hers,” but I still like the look. I’ll just have to wait until mine grows that long.

        • Janet B

I don’t blame you, her hair looks beautiful.I meant together with the dress it’s far from what my mental image of “Zoe Saldana” movie star.

    • SewingSiren

Much better than when she was in still in denial that she was looking pg.

    • Clash D

Oh for goodness sake – hire a stylist, Zoe.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

Who would have thought I would have liked a monkey pattern?!

    • Kaonashi

Looks much better than the monstrousity she had on the other day.

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

She does look a lot better/healthier here, which is a relief. Yay for her! Maybe pregnancy will be good for her. Twins, my goodness.

    • saintebeuve

Lovely! I’m glad she knew it would NAB.

    • decormaven

Love that look over the shoulder. She looks great, and she knows it.

    • boweryboy

Meh. She looks good, but I’m not feeling it. She not only has a monkey on her back, but all over her as well.

Thanks for the Stepford Wives screenshot. I’ve immediately made it my desktop background for my work computer.

    • Ashleigh

      pregnant?

    • ChelseaNH

HA! Scrolling through the pictures, I was thinking, “Time to start the pregnancy rumors.”

    • Milos Mom

Accckkkkk. I know she is preggers but still. No. No. No. But I do hope that she keeps some of the baby weight after the baby because I think she is a bit skeletal otherwise.

    • evave2

They dress is pretty but I think it looks a little big on her.

    • Qitkat

I love this look on the model, especially the pop of blue purse and the braids. It feels more polished, and less twee than it does on Zoe.

But I have no idea why the first thing that this dress made me think of was Gone with the Wind, with Scarlett declaring “As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again!” Which makes no sense at all, especially given the monkeys. My brain, it scares me sometimes.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s quite demure, yet the print gives it a little bit of oomph. We recently watched the original Stepford Wives and still shrieked with laughter!

    • Qitkat

And just what the heck is that shopping cart picture from? Hilarious!

    • MilaXX

this just says WTH, everyone knows I’m preggers.

    • Ali2044

Was not a fan of the dress until I saw a close up of the print. It looks like capuchin monkeys that have been set on fire. I want this print on everything now.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

      Nope!

    • demidaemon

      I’m sorry, but GTNYD.

    • LadyCelia

How can monkey ruffles be Stepford?

    • Leslie Streeter

      Nope.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

I actually love the contrast between the weird print and the standard floaty dress shape. Good work, Saldana.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t love the look on her overall but love the fabric. Most importantly, love the shout out which is so on point: “All she needs is a big floppy hat and a shopping cart” Was kind of obsessed with that movie!!

    • Pound of Salt

More sister wife than Stepford wife

    • SistaT

I was just about to say, “This dress makes her look pregnant.” Now I don’t feel bad about it.

    • NBG

Perfect. Quirky enough for SDCC and pretty enough for a genre movie star who just announced she is pregnant. Look at her face, she knows she nailed it.

    • lalahartma

Comfy, but I say no to monkey print dresses.

    • Kirstin McAulay

Them is def some first trimester boobies! She looks great, and I love the fun print

    • Drunken Housewife

Love the fabric. Cannot abide those ruffles.
