Robin Wright at the “A Most Wanted Man” New York Premiere

Posted on July 23, 2014

We love the idea of this look if not the reality of it.

She definitely found her style niche with “soft butch” and we encourage her to ride that train as far as it’ll go. It suits her extremely well and it’s just unique enough among the celebrity lady set to make her stand out. But not one of these items do anything for the others. It all feels totally random. Keep the pants, because they’re pretty fabulous, and switch out the top and the shoes for ones that add a little more ooomph and tie the whole look together.

    • Mothra

Not feeling any love for the shoes, and the pants seem a little too long.

      • kimmeister

Waaay too long. The flimsy fabric combined with the length almost makes them look like harem pants, or that they’re tucked into the shoes.

      • Nicole

I like the shoes but they don’t quite go.

    • RussellH88

That top is just way too casual. Her top half is going on a run while her lower half is going to a speakeasy.

      • sienna elm

I agree – but I think it’s because of the colour. If the top was black it would look less like an undershirt and bring this up a serious notch.

        • NormDeplume720

The color of that top whispers “I’m a dingy undershirt” to me.

        • Grumpy Girl

I dunno; that pink placket on the side looks pure “runners gear” to me, no matter what the rest of the color is.

      • TAGinMO

Exactly. Martina from the waist up, Bugsy Malone from the waist down. Not an uninteresting combo, but not a good one either.

    • Jessica Freeman

The woman does not age. I love lady pants at appearances, but I have a hatred of the brown/black combo.

    • mjude

I love the shoes but NOT with the rest of the look

      • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Same. The shoes are too cute and right up my alley. I can already envision it with black tights and a cute knit dress. *swoons*

        Fall Season, hurry up!

        • mjude

girl, I love me a man shoe!

      • MilaXX

I’d like that shoe if it was gray.

    • Coleen

You can NOT just dress “as you wish,” lady. Put in some effort.

    • lexilexi

She has almost no makeup on, and she looks fab. But the hair! To me it always looks like it needs a good shampoo and shushing.

      • MilaXX

I see foundation, concealer, eye shadow, mascara, blush & lip stick. It a really good natural looking application, but she’s wearing a lot of makeup. It’s just done really well. I love it because it hoes to show that a clean face doesn’t mean dead lips.

        • AC Simons

“hoes to show” – well that’s not a bad Freudian slip.

          • MilaXX

            Autocorrect hates me

            • conlakappa

Or just judges you. You type “hoes” a lot?

            • MilaXX

              not on purpose.

      • fursa_saida

It needs something, all right. It’s just sitting there like a bowl cut.

    • Danielle

The top is too casual, but her arms are looking toned. I’m not mad at it.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The top would be so much better without the coloured zips.

      • kimmeister

Which probably don’t even open. The underside of her arms must’ve been chafed to death by the end of the day!

    • Bexxx

I don’t even care about the outfit. I’m too busy throwing myself a pity party because I’ll never have those shoulders.

      • Fitzperry

I was thinking the same. She looks amazing.

      • Snailstsichr

Something my first husband told me, which I always treasured – “Part of her job IS to work out; if you put as much time and money into working out as she does, you’d look like that, too. I bet she would suck at YOUR job and you are good at it.” (the actual quote was about a picture of Demi Moore several decades ago, but it was the perfect thing to say to someone despairing over lingering baby fat.)

        • j.w.

Nice quote. So sweet of your first husband to tell you that. I was thinking that I can remember almost every famele celeb going through a period of “not very fitted” body. Almost everyone, you name them, Demi, Charlize, Nicole…everyone of them have some picture where they were chubby, or bloated or not really toned. EXCEPT Robin Wright. I can’t find a picture of her in 30 years of career where she is not fitted and toned and slim.

    • lobsterlen

As much as I totally agree with your assessment Robin is somehow making it work.

    • jilly_d

I love those shoes, but not with this. And that tank top is the color of sweat. Robin, you’re better than this.

    • Noah

This would be so much better if the top didn’t look like it came from the sale rack at Lululemon.

    • Gatto Nero

The top looks very junior/athletic. Pants are fine. Why the brown boots with black/grey pants?
      Her face is lovely.

    • Crystal

I really do love the soft butch look, and her face looks LOVELY, but the soft butch thing generally works better if your clothes go together and fit properly. You’ve got to be SHARP if you’re going to rock that particular style.

      • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

        Well said.

      • carnush

Exactly. And sharp this is not.

    • snarkykitten

okay ladies, you drool over the beefcakes/give them a pass, I’ll drool over her & give her a pass.

I’ll refrain from making remarks about where her clothes should be, though.

      • sweetestsith

No need to refrain, I’m with you…

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Don’t really like anything about this. Irrational hatred of Robin Wright rears its ugly head.

    • deelup

The top being tailored at the bottom instead of baggy and blousey would do a whole lot to improve this look. I love her. She’s mine no matter what she’s wearing.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

she does look like a fine catch.

    • Wink

The clothes are meh, but SHE is looking mighty fine… face, hair, body… all of it.

    • j.w.

She definitely goes for the fierce “I don’t give a shit about dressing up and try hard like the other Hollywood hoes” look. Respect. Besides: let’s not forget this woman spends 6 months a year on the set dressing up in Claire Underwood style: after all those tailored shift dresses and pencil skirts, she has the right to wear whatever the f*** she wants to in real life.

    • Sophie

Love the shoes and the face, but nothing in-between.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Careful, TLo. Now Frank Underwood will shove you in front of a train.

    • MilaXX

I like the laid back style of this look, however I don’t like the shoe. The brown feels too harsh and wintry. Black shoe or sandal and I’m good

    • charlotte

She should give that top to Taylor Swift for one of her “leaving the gym” photo-ops.

      • Julie Ree

I was also thinking she looks like she just left the gym with that tank. I wonder if she was thinking: “I am fierce. I forgot the good shirt so I’ll wear what I worked out in. Going to a Red Carpet. Eat it Bitches.”

    • Glam Dixie

She’s working the whole, ‘Farm boy, I’ll fetch my own damn pitcher’ look, but I don’t like the brown shoes, the pants need a hem and the shirt is too casual. With some tweaking this is definitely a look she could rock the hell out of.

    • Carleenml

I love her casual, natural, comfortable look. She’s beautiful. Other celebrity women could learn a thing or two from her.

    • Sam Smith

Her look really is very striking, but the outfit is not doing it for me.

    • CB

I like the idea of her with a short haircut…just not this one. It is Bieber-adjacent.

      • jay

YES. An inch shorter, or something.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

All great stuff…just not together…exactly what u said!

    • http://litbrit.blogspot.com/ Deborah Newell Tornello

I know I’m outnumbered, but I really loved her hair when it was long. As for this outfit, love the pants, black oxfords instead of orangey-brown please, and a nice, slinky white silk Armani shirt, unbuttoned just so. Not that awful tank top, which shouts late 80s Comme des Garçons. ETA: Her complexion is platinum-standard-gorgeous. Just, wow.

    • d4divine

I would hem those pants and throw on a vicious necklace or bracelets.

      • JauntyJohn

Yes! One powerful necklace and the whole deal is elevated from “What if gym teachers were also bankers?” to chic film premiere ensemble.
And a necklace (the right one, anyway) wouldn’t even be fussy or change the comfort level of these clothes.

        • Jacob Bowen

“What if gym teachers were also bankers?” is now my question of the day for tomorrow when my students come in the classroom…it is a great story starter!

    • SophieCollier

She might take a page from Jodie Foster, the queen of soft butch.

    • Paula Pertile

I love the shoes. But maybe not with that outfit.

      • Snailstsichr

Yup, I’d keep the shoes and start over.

    • barbarienne

I would like the top if it were a shade lighter and didn’t have those colored stripes on the sides. The shoes are completely wrong for this outfit.

    • boweryboy

This is alright if she were heading to the sports bar to watch the World’s Cup or something, but surely not for a movie premiere.

      • conlakappa

And not for the premiere of a serious movie.

    • beebee10

Yep, it’s fun for a lady star to go in this direction and, I imagine, liberating. Kudos to her.

    • butterflysunita

I think I’m the only one, but I love the way she looks here. I wouldn’t like this look on anyone else, but it works on her. And those pants are fabulous.

    • PastryGoddess

Those shoes were a needle scratch moment for me

    • OffToSeeHim

I think the zippers take the top straight to “on my way back from the gym.”

    • Nika E

      Her freaking skin is amazing.

    • MarissaLG

      The shoes really ruin it.

    • carnush

A crisp white shirt and a killer pair of sandals or stilettos would have made this so right.

    • mommyca

I don’t know about this look… Is she morphing into Ben Foster??

    • ashtangajunkie

The only part I really hate is the shoe. I can get on board with everything else.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

robin is indeed looking quite butch in her silk wife beater, right down to her game of pocket pool. do we need a new name for that when a lady is playing? i actually like the booties with the pants, very english dandy. i’m not going for the under arm pop art colored zippers, though.

    • World of Sass

OMG that boy-band hair is TERRIBLE.

      • Constant Reader

YES! And the outfit isn’t helping. I thought I was the only one looking at this thinking she looks like the lost Backstreet Boy. So, a dated boy band look.

    • ShaoLinKitten

When I saw the thumbnail I thought this was a male celebrity who was way under dressed for an event. I do not like the top. I think she needs to add a little more soft to her butch in the upper half of this look.

    • NinjaCate

I viscerally hate that haircut. I noticed it when I was rewatchin HoC last night.

    • Anglow

      Bland.

    • evave2

Hmm. I posted something hours ago and it did not show up. Maybe it will in the off-year.

I think soft-butch is the best term for this look. I agree that the pink slash on the top looks runners’ gearish. But the pants are great. I don’t think she is that tall, but the pants make her look very long-legged. I like the shoes. I never ever have liked brown shoes with black but here it feels like a pop of color not BROWN SHOES (as Frank Zappa used to sing).

She is a wonderfully attractive woman. (At the end of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo she is walking with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara comes up on her motorcycle and just knew that no matter what, NOBODY could get between those two characters. It was so evident he would ALWAYS end up with Robin Wright’s character. And she was so effortlessly beautiful and confident that Rooney’s character just rode off.)

    • macwell

It’s do funny to see her now. I firstsaw her Iin the NBC soap opera , ‘Santa Barabara’. At the time, I thought she was the prettiest woman I had ever seen – ! She’s grown up pretty nicely…..;)

    • J. Preposterice

I tend towards soft-butch-ish myself, and I would wear this. To the supermarket (well, not with that heel height, but you know what I mean). It’s just. too casual, with the tank top, and the shoes being in brown. black patent shoes? now we’re getting somewhere….

    • Cee Layton

She looks like a 16 year old surfer boy from the 90s.

    • conniemd

She looks like a lesser (but still good) Cate Blanchett here. The 4th picture with her eyes looking into the distance are so Galadriel and she seems to have a secret smile, that is not a smirk, but a benevolent look at the viewer.

    • E. D.

      Needs dark heels or sandals.

    • marlie

If her top looked a teensy bit less like a workout top, and she had on some killer heels or sandals, this would work. But those shoes are all sorts of wrong for this look.

    • demidaemon

Yeah, it feels like it is missing something. She definitely needs another piece of jewelry, at least.

    • sk8tfan

She threw this on after finishing the qualifying rounds of the swim meet.

    • StrandedFashionista

I can get Robin wanting to do that kinda look for herself. I bet all those tailored-to-there sheath dresses and high-heels she wears as Claire probably get a little tiresome.

    • Trickytrisha

Don’t much care for the look, but what makes me a tad peeved is that she’d dress this way for the premiere of what should be a well respected and reviewed film. Give it a little effort, Robin.

    • ceceliadid

Meet the new inmate, Sam – she’s in for locking her abusive ex into a tanning bed until he screamed for mercy. Fluent in several languages including German, Poussey is over the moon for this one.

    • CKMia

The only thing I like abut this is Robin Wright, because Claire Underwood.

    • livesarah

I like the top but would definitely switch out the shoes. I actually think she could go more butch with the hair and it would look even better.

    • Man Dala

I like her hair, it’s a bit longer but not too much. She looks great, me thinks.

    • Judih1

Agreed – -totally random items thrown together. Is she trying to tell us something with her “soft butch” look?

    • spirit52

Hate the Keith Urban hairdo. In fact, I hate everything about this look.

    • gitchygitchymama

what’s the pink landing strip extending from her armpit? Ugh the keith urban soft butch hair don’t. NO.

    • MilaXX

She’s on Jimmy Fallon with the same shoes, the vest to these pants and boyfriend jeans. I can’t tell for sure, but I think she’s wearing the same shirt under the vest.. Did she not want to check luggage on her trip up north? I

    • Lulu

The top is summer, but it’s all winter from the waist down. It’s HOT here in NY, I’m sweating just looking at those pants and shoes.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

‘Soft butch’. LOL, I’m stealing that.

    • Jarethee

Was anyone else being raised that you don’t mix brown shoes and black slacks or vice versa under any circumstances? I had it drilled in from a young age so I never wear browns and blacks O_o Or is it okay now?

    • Guest

Robin is dressed like a 60 year old dyke.

    • jonnyf8

This looks lazy to the point of being rude. Like something some of the douchier guy stars wear. In fact if she was a guy you would tell her to shave her neck.

    • Deedles

When you look at the thumbnail and your first impression is 15-year-old-wanna-be-boy-bander-with-Bieber-hair in a basketball uniform, you might want to re-think the top and the hair. I love the short hair, but not how it’s deployed.

    • yllas

I adore the shoes! I must have them, or something like them, this fall or I will perish. The top looks like one of those oddball things, left on the sales rack, and the price tag has half a dozen ever-decreasing sales stickers plastered over the original price till the final “$5″ sticker. Ugly color, ugly style….I think I have those pants! They’re made of rayon, found in the Rescue Mission thrift store for $4.98, and perfect for slouching around the house on a weekend.

    • JynxTheCat

The thumbnail made me wonder who is this teen heartthrob I know nothing of? Well done! Although nothing goes.

    • LambeeBaby

Nope. I don’t like any of it except for her make up. It looks like she had to make do with whatever was clean and threw it together. The shoes are cool but not with those pants.

    • dschubba

This only works for me from the waist up but, in general, I think she’s looked great since dumping her Least Wanted Man.

From the waist down, she’s swinging into “soft butch pirate” territory.
