Naomie Harris in Vivienne Westwood at Virgin Atlantic Party

Posted on July 02, 2014

This is the summer 2014 celeb-style trifecta. Can you name the three super-trendy red carpet elements on display here (all of which make T Lo weary)?

Ready? Wipe your monitor down in lemon juice and put on your special glasses to see the answer!

1. A too-heavy, off-season dress,

2. in black and white, with

3. pop-of-color shoes.

Did you guess them all! Send in a boxtop to receive your prize!

We don’t hate anything here, but we don’t love the pink shoes paired with that kind of dress. They need to go with something more fun and youthful than this. And the dress itself is pretty, but it just looks like something you’d wind up sweating in, attending a party in July. If this was lent to her, we hope they taped some dress shields to the hanger. Or would that be really bitchy? It’s so hard for us to tell where the line is anymore.

That’s a pretty dingy shade of grey.

  • Emily Giovanni

At least the shows aren’t yellow. Amirite?

    • MartyBellerMask

      Or suede!!

    • Denise Rambo

      Or suede.

      • shirab

        Or yellow suede…

  • marlie

I really, really, really hate this bubblegum pink shoe trend. It is a pretty dress, though.

FWIW, I guessed the second two, and I thought that the other might be the seasonally inappropriate dress, OR the equally as irritating bubblegum pink lipstick.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

I thought it was the lipstick, too.

  • Claire

Lose the weird boob-squishing seams and shorten the sleeves and this would be very cute.

    • mellorcr

At first I thought the bodice was badly altered, but the more I look at it, the neckline suggests she put it on backwards. The neckline is a good 2 inches than on the model’s dress, and there is also an extra dart in the center.

      • FibonacciSequins

Looking more closely, I think you’re absolutely right. I wonder if that was intentional or accidental?

      • kimmeister

There is also a horizontal waist seam that isn’t seen on the model.

      • suzanne77

You cracked this case wide open. She is TOTALLY wearing it backward!

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

That’s a office holiday party dress.

    • Constant Reader

      My thoughts exactly.

  • ashtangajunkie

It’s like she put on the dress and someone said, “Doesn’t look much like summer.” And then the stylist tossed her a pair of pink pumps and said, “Ta-da! Summer.” It didn’t work.

    • demidaemon

This is probably exactly the stylist’s train of thought, and that makes me sad.

  • sienna elm

The pink shoes look especially odd photographed in front of the red display shoes and bags.

  • mjude

I am not a pink color kinda girl but I do NOT like that shade of pink.

  • Twigg

The pictures took a moment to load on my work PC so I sat here quietly chanting “yellow shoes! yellow shoes!” until the pictures fully appeared.

    • demidaemon

      Me too!

  • FibonacciSequins

“Wipe your monitor down in lemon juice and put on your special glasses to see the answer!”

    You guys are the best.

    • DaveUWSNYC

      I adore your screen name…

      • FibonacciSequins

        Thanks! :)

        • Eclectic Mayhem

And the Edith Head avatar is pretty damn cool too.

      • Lower L

        As do I!

  • SophieCollier

To be fair, maybe she felt she HAD to wear Westwood and this was the least hiddy option from that collection.

  • MarieLD

    Two out of three!!

    • Rhonda Shore

      Same here.

    • Wink

I guessed “floral print” instead of “off-season dress.”

    • Bonnie B

I guessed pale lip color instead of B&W

      • FibonacciSequins

      • JauntyJohn

        me too!

  • TinyDynamo

Dude in a striped polo is all “a black & white fall dress with pink pumps? Oh girl, NO.”

  • Alicia

Without the sleeves, and with a couple of adjustments to the bodice seams, that dress would be perfection. But cheap pink pleather shoes will never go with an elegant print like that. What’s wrong with a silver sandal?

  • MartyBellerMask

I had guessed matching lip color to shoe color as well.

  • MaggieMae

She is too gorgeous to not be knocking it out of the park nearly every time. Lost potential!

  • Bad Idea Jeans

It is unlikely that she is sweating in July in London.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

  • Lori

Aside from being off season and in a color scheme that’s trendy bordering on tired, the fit of the dress is odd on her. It’s doing unkind things to her boobs and the neckline is so high it sort of looks like she’s got the dress on backwards. She’s pretty, but the rest of this really isn’t working.

  • Anna

I love pink, and the idea of a pink pump, but have yet to see any I’m onboard with.

I’m starting to think celebrity seasons are something like dog years. 1 civilian season = 2 celebrity seasons ahead.

  • Denise Rambo

I like the dress much better with the shorter sleeves and, what appears to be, more seaming in the bodice.

  • Janet B

I understand not wanting to alter a borrowed dress, but wearing such an ill fitting dress in public doesn’t say anything good about the designer.

  • conniemd

She also has those weird nails with two colors, unless they are growing out and she needs a manicure. Hate the shoes with the dress. If shoes going to go off season and wear heavy black and white then she should have worn some of those red airline pumps shown in the photos.

  • FrigidDiva

Those pink pumps look like the little plastic Barbie shoes I had for my dolls when I was little ( I think now even the Barbie shoes are more stylish than what she’s wearing).

  • Danielle

The puckering at the bust makes me irrationally angry.

  • gabbilevy

Inordinately please with myself I got all three. Put her in a Navy shoe and zip her to November and this would be lovely.

  • Shawn EH

I was going to guess bad weave rather than heavy dress, but I got the other two!

  • RescueMe23

The “pointy-toe pumps with everything” trend is really annoying

  • MishaFoomin

What’s with the weird horizontal darts right above her boobs in the center? The one on the left almost looks like a pocket opening, it’s so strangely sewn.

  • Jessi03

I got it! Although honestly, before I even looked at the pictures, I definitely expected yellow pumps.

  • Emily Smith

She looks super overdressed based on the people behind her in the crowd shot.

  • Monkey Toe

The temp in England that day was 73F – 53F. If the party was at night, it was plenty cool for the dress.

  • NurseEllen

At least she took off the cuffs? Anyway, I got only 1 out of 3 (too heavy, off season). I had “floral print” and “pepto lipstick” as the others.

  • Capt. Renault

Soooo… a launch party to promote a collection that isn’t available to the public. Just so I’m clear on the concept.

    • Tom and Lorenzo

No, a launch party to celebrate their new uniforms.

      • Capt. Renault

        Aah. Yes.

  • Dino Bonačić

I don’t think the dress is too heavy… It looks really cute on her – I’d only change the hair ASAP.

  • AnaRoW

I got two out of three, shoes and grey dress. Mostly though, I’m just wondering why she’s there? And why that dress costs nearly $3000.00?

According to the style description on that link: “For us, it’s the perfect event dress and works just as well at a summer wedding as a black tie dinner.” So the people selling the dress don’t think it’s out of season.

  • quiltrx

I like the dress a lot–but it looks incredibly sweat-producing, indeed. And it’s doing strange things across the bustline…she doesn’t have a lot to talk about in that department, so it makes me wonder if a more well-endowed woman could even get this thing on. Which is bizarre, because I always think of VW designs as being good for busty (and curvy) women.
And shoes the color of Sweet-Tarts really need to go.

  • decormaven

I got all three! I want a secret decoder ring that unlocks fashion mysteries, like why TayTay carries her purse at an odd angle, and how putty pumps continue to propagate the scene.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

It made me sweat the minute I saw the fabric. Honey, you’d be sweating like you didn’t think you had the capacity to sweat if you wore that to a daytime outdoor affair about now.

  • Nika E

She looks all stiff and uncomfortable. If she lifted her arms up over her head I bet the seems in the arm pit area would bust. Ugh… its making me claustrophobic.

  • julnyes

She decides to cover up her sternum now that skin baring season is upon us? I’ll never understand celebrities.

    • MilaXX

She’ll bring it back around November.

  • MilaXX

That dress just looks hot and I HATE pink shoes almost as much as I dislike white shoes.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I would hope that the dress came with discreet dress shields, too. Jacquard seems a rather heavy choice of fabric for summer. Not loving the pink shoes

  • Abigail Tyrrell

You obviously have not heard anything about the extrememly cold and wet wether here – not the time for summer dresses.

  • Belvane

That particular pink doesn’t really work with her skin tone. She looks like she has radioactive feet.

  • gitchygitchymama

who can take a de la renta dress and make it frumpy…..Viv……..that’s who.

  • kimmeister

I got them all! Just looking for a boxtop now to send in. Will you take one from Luna Bars?

  • PinkyK

I love the dress! I’m not sure if it’s too heavy for summer – or if the sleeves are too long for someone so young? But I think it would be great on a “woman of a certain age” know what I mean?

  • Tracy_Flick

I was thinking “nude or near-nude lip color” might be in there too.

  • fromanotherplanet

She looks so doting and cute and English.

  • greymain

I am sweating just looking at her.

  • kej841

They added another dart in the center front to bring it in more for her, which I think looks a little off and spoils the fabric for me.

  • crash1212

I love that she changed the sleeves to the 3/4 length…makes for a cleaner look I think. I love this dress – off season or no. Not crazy about the shoes or the hair though.

  • Irina Ryabchuk

I also guessed pale lips, cos that looks just swollen to me.

    • Shelby

      I guessed pale lips too.

  • KT

I guessed them all! My boxtop is on its way. That sounded dirty.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

At least these shoes aren’t suede, or I would have to step away from my monitor for the rest of the day.

  • jif

To be fair, she is in London. It could be, like, oh, low 70s. That’s not too warm for jacquard, right? Right?

  • israel8491

Naomie, please send this dress to Mayim Bialik. Poor Mayim desperately needs some help finding modest red carpet wear, and this would be perfect for her.

  • fooepi

I miss sending in box tops.

  • Kerrie

    Can we add a number 4: the cross-legged, “I have-to-pee” stance?

Could be sub-zero air conditioning at that party. I always think I’m going to be boiling, and then end up wrapped in a shawl. (Er, not that I attend these kindsa parties)

  • korilian

It’s silver and looks like it might be silk, so it might be cooler than it looks.

  • nycfan

It probably doesn’t speak well for this dress that I would love one in my size to wear to a client dinner, but I would very much like one in my side for hosting client dinners and similar client development functions.
