Karen Gillan in Louis Vuitton at the “Guardians of the Galaxy” London Premiere

This is why we tend to dislike straight-from-the-runway styling:

What works on a model for 90 seconds on a runway is a bit tougher to pull off for a non-model in the so-called real world of the red carpet. These are all great items for her. And we respect her for making the choice to dress in a slightly unexpected manner for the RC. But it’s all too much for one look. As killer as those boots are, we’re thinking they need to go if she wants to wear the top and the skirt. And ditch that distracting belt. Tone those two areas down by choosing less showy options and the rest of the outfit will get a chance to breathe a little, if that makes any sense.

She doesn’t’ look quite comfortable in the outfit, either; as if she’s saying, “Yeah, they handed me this one to wear.”  We’re coming around on the hair. It looks cute here.

Is everyone in Hollywood in this movie? Maybe she picked this because the pocket is a blue rectangle like the Tardis. Poor, poor Amy Pond.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I think she should go full on LaRoux with her hair, and rock the 80’s / Blade Runner / retro sci-fi thing for a bit.

      • lundibleu

I said exactly that the other day – if you’re going to copy Elly’s hair, you go the whole hog.

    • Carleenml

I think without the belt and the blue pocket it would be killer. In a fantasy “first day back to school outfit” sort of way.

      • Shawn EH

If her school was in Vail.

        • Carleenml

heh. I’m New England…kind of says “autumn sweater” here, too.

    • Emily Smith

As someone who has had similar haircuts in the past, hers is so much better than mine was. I am so envious.

    • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

That top/jacket thing is just straight up hideous. The skirt could have been nice with a simpler top. She has such lovely hair but she seems to be entering the awkward grow-out phase, and her face shape isn’t really good for short lengths like that in the first place.

      • KateM

I think her face is so much more distinctive with short hair! I thought she looked kind of generic-pretty with long hair.

        • Janet B

I hope she stays with the shorter hair, I think it’s cute/lovely/ interesting.

          • Carleenml

me three. she’s insanely cute. and good lord, what perfect legs. new girl crush.

        • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

I think her face is too round for it. I mean, she still looks beautiful but her head looks a little too spherical if her hair is above chin-length.

        • twocee

I like the pure pixie cut on her, but I don’t like the giant 80’s-esque ball of hair on top of her head she’s been sporting lately. Makes me think of a tribble.

    • gabbilevy

None of this is working for me. It’s more Sixth Doctor than Eleven, and that is not a good thing.

    • SewSophie

This looks very uncomfortable for summer. Even in London isn’t as hot as some places. Why doesn’t anyone want to dress for summer?

      • Corsetmaker

It’s roasting this week, don’t know how she can bear it!

      • Moocows

Yeah im totally sick of people dressing inappropriately for the seasons. Thats a fucking sweater shes wearing, with thick, heavy boots. It just looks so stupid. Moreover, celebrities are human too and they sweat. I just imagine them turning in their ten thousand dollar outfits with pit stains and a gnarly stank.

    • imspinningaround

Is Maggie Rizer the runway model? Nice to see her again.

      • Anna

        That is Maggie, LOVE HER!

    • Anna

Caption for the last photo as Karen catches a full glimpse of herself: “MOTHER-FUCKITY-FUCK.”

    • rosie5215

Maybe it’s the big hair or the silhouette, but this reads as “futuristic honky-tonk” to me.

    • kipper

and then there is the penis ……

      • FrigidDiva

Glad I’m not the only one. That’s all I saw in the side picture…I thought maybe my mind was in a dirty place since it’s Friday.

    • pocketcopter

That top looks like a cropped version of the sweater ALL of my cousins had in the 90s. And I don’t mean that in a good way.
Without that sad, droopy belt and with a simple top that skirt would be fabulous, though. And those boots with skinny jeans would be killer, I think.

      • marlie

I had that sweater back in the 90s. *hangs head in shame*

        • pocketcopter

I’m almost positive I had one in my closet, too. I was way more fond of my many, many velvet dresses. I even bought one last year for some ungodly reason. The 90s will continue to haunt us all.

    • Janet B

Not liking the top at all. Nope. On the other hand, love the shoes for a different time and outfit.

      • caroline

Me either. The line reminds me of the bad high-school-photo drape stitched on a sweater.

    • nannypoo

She’s a super stylish cowgirl. Love the hair.

    • Shawn EH

It’s a very weird combo of elements. What about a normal black belt and … blue suede boots? Like, real ones that come up to her knees, rather than these fussy booties?

    • altermyego

Do you think it was planned to have at least one picture where she’s being stabbed by a sword by the guy in the poster?

      • Ruth Boeder

And another where the alien-tree-dude is trying to catch her elbow to steer her away?

      • conniemd

A sword right in tittie nonetheless. I kinda stared at the craziness of that picture.

        • smayper

I saw all of these unfortunate placement problems!

    • Vegas Girl

The skirt is the only element like, the rest can go. But she has great skin and I think her hair is the hair Miley Cyrus wishes she has.

    • Kate

Aaaaactually flinched when I saw her shoes. Ouch.

    • S-k-s

That shirt should be on no one ever.

The ensemble seems like some messed up project runway challenge (b3 at least if not the losing look) to design an outfit for girl guides … Or a weird western themed restaurant. Both of which the producers are probably exploring sponsorship opportunities with as I type.

      • FrigidDiva

Maybe next year they’ll have Texas Roadhouse sponsor the show so they can design ridiculous outfits for the servers and style it from the Origami Owl wall.

    • Lori

Why is she wearing a long sleeved sweater in July? Unless London is having a serious cold snap this is stupid, even before you get to the parts that are just bad (the shoes, WTF?).

    • Jacob Bowen

Where is it cool enough outside to wear a SWEATER now? Is it really under 50 deg F (10 deg C) in London? Otherwise it is RIDICULOUS to wear this!

      • formerlyAnon

It has been hot in London this week, according to my internet acquaintances. Summer weather even by the standards of much of the southern U.S.

        • Jacob Bowen

That’s what I figured! It has been cool in Northern Illinois this summer, but I wouldn’t really wear a sweater unless it was 60 or lower.

    • marlie

That sweater would be great if she was at a ski lodge. In December. The whole outfit is a little too much for me, though, with the fair isle detail on the sweater, and THEN the belt, and THEN the fussy boots. Also, the publicists should get photos of what the backgrounds look like, because that’s an added layer of business that distracts the eyes.

    • boweryboy

That skirt is all kinds of fierce, but the rest is a hot mess.

    • teensmom99

It’s identifiably Vuitton but I think the top is the biggest problem here. I don’t even like it on the model.

      • demidaemon

Me neither. It has about two elements too many.

    • decormaven

Too many tricky accessories. She’s not sold on the look, either. She deserved a better look, but I’m glad she’s getting designer duds.

    • Sharon

I kind of wish she kept more length to the skirt – like on the model.

    • JauntyJohn

Actually, I like it. She’s got the sass to pull it off, and the more I look the more I think, while it’s not immediately something I view as an RC look, it suits the genre quite well.

    • Cheryl

Gawd, I HATE this. It’s not even crazy bad; crazy bad is at least fun. This is just ugly, mundane, plain and BORING. I mean if you are going to dress in awful clothes at least make it interesting.

    • Audrey Lee

The only thing i like is her boots. The skirt would be okay in a different outfit, but that sweater is…vile.

    • yllas

Hahahahahahahaaaaaaa!!! Funny outfits all around for this movie.

    • evave2

Even the model looks like she has side pouch on her stomach. She stands out because the outfit is overly busy and she fades in due to the non-distinct color of the gray. I LIKE the boots a lot though.

    • conniemd

The sweater definitely looks great for dinner and drinks after a hard day of skiing at a ski resort. Since it’s completely zip up and short, you could match it with a thin shirt underneath, because sometimes in ski towns the places are heated ultra warm. The boots look like they might be a bit too high heeled, even though they are sturdy to walk around in said snow-covered ski village.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Karen, don’t be alarmed but you have an escaped python around your waist. Move slowly towards the zookeeper.

    • msdamselfly

Love the sweater and the skirt on her.

    • http://www.chateauversailles.fr/homepage DaveUWSNYC

Love the Poster Guy stabbing her in Pic 4!

    • idek

i actually like it, we don’t get enough of fun separates on the red carpet, though i do think i could see someone like kristen stewart or emma stone giving that skirt a little more life, emma would definitely go prep with it and kristen would go edgy, and they definitely would have changed up the runway styling to their own styles and would have had more fun with it.

No matter, karens been really trying out some different styles and i appreciate it, i never know what she’ll wear next for this pole dance

    • Mary Lauer

Why is the skirt so much shorter on her? It’s not like the model is petite!

      • WendyD

Karen is rather tall. She’s 5’10”.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I prefer the matte leather belt from the runway. And it needs a simple, short-sleeved top – would a blue gingham shirt be on the nose with the skirt?

    • DuBey2

Love the booties. Love the hair. Not the whole outfit together.

    • fromanotherplanet

    • Corsetmaker

I don’t like it but….. a woollen jumper! It’s been a heatwave all over the country this week, she must be boiled alive in that!

      • Wink

It’s too hot for ANY of this!

    • Dino Bonačić

      I kinda love it 😀

    • Nicole

I really like that skirt for her.

    • Deedles

That’s a Clara Oswald outfit, not an Amelia Pond one.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Looks like it would be uncomfortably warm, too.

    • what not

Girl, That’s Not Your Look–too Ralph Lauren. Cute boots, though.

    • formerlyAnon

I love the hair but [warning: I COMPLETELY miss whatever vision is behind the design here, o.k.? I get that. Plus it’s in colors that I do not love] I think the clothes are awful. Not flattering, not cute, not pretty, not elegant. Not on anyone. Not even the model.

The shoes have promise, though the brown/black contrast is a barrier for me.

Yes, this is an “it’s all about me” post.

      • demidaemon

Well, I pretty much agree with you. I hate everything from neck to knees. It’s awful.

    • KT

Not feeling this. I agree that it’s all too much. The skirt and boots are really cute, but the top needs to be simpler and sleeker to go with these busy items — and preferably in black.

I will say that none of this quite suits her, and I agree she looks uncomfortable in this. She should go for more imaginative, funkier looks for sure. Also I thought her hair looked great the last time we saw her, but looks pretty middle-age-mom here.

    • Sam Smith

      I heart those booties!

    • Dagney

Are you kidding me with that sweater? It came from a ski shop in Vail. what the….?

    • gitchygitchymama

ok this is straight from project runway, right?

    • CNM

I like the shoes but that sweater is completely FUG. If she just had a simple black top on, the look would be 100 times improved.

    • SophieCollier

Ditch the sweater shirt thing entirely because it’s ugly. A black fitted Tshirt would have looked cute with this.

    • CKMia

      R.I.P. Louis Vuitton.

    • MilaXX

She’s wearing boots and a sweater in July. Keep the skirt, give her a tank top and sandals.

    • GemFemme

She’s an adorable breath of fresh air on the red carpet, I just wish she had better stylists to capitalize on that.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Grow up n wear adult clothes!

    • Jennifer Ford

Well, except for she is (was) a model. I think it’s more that the outfit is just not really that great though the skirt looks longer on the runway and I think that would have helped a bit.

    • quiltrx

It looks like something Jessie will wear after she and Buzz Lightyear have lived in Space for a while.

    • unbornfawn

The jacket or the skirt. Not both together.

    • demidaemon

I just don’t like this outfit. As the PR people would say, “My eye doesn’t know where to go.”

    • StrandedFashionista

Even though the outfit doesn’t work I’m excited that Karen is getting Vuitton to wear on the RC. That means her stock is going up!

    • Richard

What’s with all these celebs wearing sweaters and jackets in summer? I mean, I like her little jacket, but just looking at her makes me sweat.

    • MightyMarshal

Those shoes look like a Kris Anka X-Men design.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Karen Gillan made level 4 with the Junior Explorers and they gave her the black belt to go with her uniform!

    • largishbearishAtlish

Oi…. I thought it was some sort of cool/kewl scarf thing :(… the pocket thing read ‘tricorder’ and the boots?? Cancan dance at the cantina? way to cutesy…..sigh.

    • Clash D

The way that belt is tied is SO SO wrong.

    • heartbot

I can’t believe anyone in the Northern hemisphere is that covered up in late July.

    • lalahartma

      Love her in that skirt.
