Jessica Chastain in Mary Katrantzou at “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” Premiere

Posted on July 15, 2014

We think this looks pretty much exactly like Christmas wrapping paper, but the overall effect of this look is so head-turning and unusual that it doesn’t matter.

Are we resisting the urge to Photoshop a giant bow and gift tag on her? Yes. Is that side seam a little, shall we say, problematic? Absolutely. Should she have worn such a thick belt? Probably not. Does this rhetorical technique get irritating right around the fourth question? Indubitably. But these colors look really amazing on her and this simply doesn’t look like your standard red carpet gown. It really stands out – and we’re the types that automatically award points to anything that stands out. Plus her hair and makeup look great – and suit the dress perfectly. We can’t help but dig it, even if it does have a couple issues.

With bangs/pin straight hair, I hardly recognize her. Beautiful dress, and I like to imagine she’s wearing comfy shoes since it’s so long

    • lexilexi

I agree. She looks totally different with bangs. I like them.

    • Sobaika

She has a real chameleon-like quality, a few tweaks to her hair or wardrobe and she looks like a very different person. It serves her well as an actress.

      • annla

That doesn’t even look like her to me. Like had work done, can’t recognize her now. Is it just the bangs?

        • Thomas

          Yup, just the bangs.

    • lundibleu

I was just going to post that I barely recognised her. Why couldn’t they have got her to do the “celebrities through the ages” spread rather than Gwynnie? She has that chameleon quality which would be fantastic for them.

When you have two people, one who looks the same always and one who looks different with different hair and makeup, who would you choose?

All that aside, she looks FANTASTIC.

  • PastryGoddess

    Love this dress on her.

  • Gatto Nero

The colors and shape are smashing on her. She has worn similar styles (with metallic, dramatic prints) by Alexander McQueen and others and really seems to carry this kind of look beautifully.

    • Thomas

She’s been one of the best dressed at the Oscars. The black McQueen with the amber motif that she wore in 2012 looked exquisite on her and she looked like Jessica Rabbit or Rita Hayworth in that coppery-nude metallic Armani Prive in 2013.

  • SistaT

I think this might be the prettiest her hair and makeup have ever looked and I love that dress. It looks exactly like a vase my grandmother had in her living room (and I mean that as the greatest compliment).

  • Jarethee

I think the best thing is is that it’s different in a sea of blandness. Love the pattern, love that it’s not dark and oppressive looking (but looks on par for Italia, if not broiling in the summer) and love how happy she looks. Good on her.

    • DuBey2

No lace overlay! No cutouts! No sheers! And, again, No Lace! And we all say HOO RAY!

  • clatie

I want to touch the dress so badly! And I actually like it with the belt.

  • Rhonda Shore

    Truly striking. She looks mah-velous.

  • World of Sass

She looks gorgeous, though the bangs make her look a lot like Jenny Lewis — who is also very beautiful, but ya know, branding and all that.

  • Wink

Stunning! Lose the belt and it looks like something Nicole Kidman would wear.

  • Jessica Freeman

    Love everything but the booms.

  • Lower L

The dress is fabulous–can’t believe there’s a Katrantzou that I like!

  • Anna

Agree with the quibbles, but I like it on her. That colour is mesmerizing, can’t stop staring at it. And I love the hair, best I’ve seen on her.

  • nannypoo

I love everything about this. She’s beautiful.

  • Liz

I think the belt was perfect if it was just a clasp in the front, not with holes or buckle. The look is awesome, but I think she becomes very generic with it.

  • Aidan B

LOVE that dress! And it really does look fabulous on her. Hair and makeup look great too.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Beautiful dress – the colors are so right on her. I don’t like the hair very much – it’s not that the hair is bad…I don’t like what the bangs are doing to her eyes.

    • latenac

Agreed, I don’t like the hair really or the makeup. Took my a couple of minutes to get to the dress b/c I was so distracted by both. The dress is quite amazing though.

    • whaddami

I’m with you on that — she has such a gorgeous, gorgeous facial structure and skin, and this hides all of that — I wouldn’t have recognized her (and I don’t mean that in a good way). The dress is pretty incredible though.

  • Sophie

Don’t like the shininess around her bust, but the rest looks great. Love the motifs on her hips and the fact that the print contains green.
Interesting fact I recently got from an exhibition: until the Ballet Russe came to Paris in 1904, green and blue would never have been worn together in Europe. After that time, jewellers and designers started using the two colours at the same time.
This blue looks great on her.

    • Beardslee

Interesting! I didn’t know that! Good old Ballet Russe. We owe them so much.

      • formerlyAnon

        Ain’t that the truth?!

  • Martha Anderson

I suspect this fabric looks better in ambient light and without the spotlights of the cameras. That first photos is lovely, hinting at how glorious this fabric might be.. I too think the belt would have looked better if it was fitted and without the extra tongue holes.

  • Danielle

I really like the hair and makeup, it could be a Personal Best for her.

  • msdamselfly

Bangs and eyemakeup not flattering. Do not like those colors or intense sheen on her

  • Alyssa

What a beautiful dress! The fabric looks luxurious! I imagine she looked like a goddess strolling around in that. I agree with your quibbles, but it’s just such a stunning look for her.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

  • SewingSiren

    SIREN! LOVES. Except the belt

  • FibonacciSequins

My only quibble is the belt. Either go glam or go Western, don’t try to have it both ways. Stunning dress and she’s stunning in it.

  • Mr. J.

    You go, Miss Shiny Thing.

  • Anna

Well this makes up for the tablecloth dress she wore a few days ago! Absolutely stunning!

  • Lilah

I think the hair is too casual for the dress.

  • decormaven

I think it’s the buckle on the belt that bugs; if it were just a golden belt sans a buckle, it would be perfection. Her hair and make-up are spot on. Style team scored here!

  • Grumpy Girl

The dress is stunning, and looks wonderful with her hair color and the shine of her hair. I am not in love with the bangs–want them swept aside a bit. And a slightly more vibrant shade of lipstick. I realize that could be hard not to go into fall/winter territory, but something a little “more” of a color.

  • formerlyAnon

She looks good; the dress is interesting and something on the positive side of not-unflattering. The hair looks ‘young’ for her in this dress, to me, (I know, I know, she’s still in her 30s) and I can’t figure out why.

  • Bad Idea Jeans

    Erté realness!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

That is a lot of shiny, but she looks fabulous in it.

  • kimmeister

Love this dress, would have never guessed it was a Mary Katrantzou.

  • cocohall

After her red hot chili pepper fiasco, this is quite an amazing comeback. Good for her.

  • fromanotherplanet

What in the ill-fitting tacky fabrics waist-widening hell? Fix it Jesus.

  • MoHub

I give it points for being a Katrantzou that doesn’t look as if it came off the wall of a poster shop.

  • mitch45

i honestly dont think she’s ever looked better!!

  • Paula Pertile

I said “Egyptian statue!” when I saw this, and I don’t even know if that makes any sense. But she looks pretty.

  • MilaXX

I think I would like it more if the belt was the same blue as the bottom of the dress. Love the hair & makeup.

  • jilly_d

That is an unexpected scroll down surprise- in a good way. I would have preferred a ponytail here, but she looks nice.

  • E. D.

I love the bangs. Not so sure about this dress in July.

  • GeoDiva

The belt adds a casual vibe that was not needed. Otherwise, everything else is great!

  • alwaysanswerb

Personally, this is probably one of my favorite looks she’s ever worn.

  • Janet B

    Neck up – gorgeous.
I don’t like the dress, but something about it works for her. Maybe it’s the colors or silhouette.

  • Bert Keeter

Think w/o belt would be better. HATE the bangs and long hair w this…needs some air around the face n neck!

  • Stella Zawistowski

This is Mary Katrantzou? It seems too refreshingly uncomplicated to be that! I’m a fan.

  • Anique Ashraf

A quick search on IMDB reveals why she’s suddenly dressing interestingly: she has a few major projects coming out, so cliche they sound made up — a movie about zookeepers in WWII (possible Oscar bait), a biopic of Marilyn Monroe (lifetime? oscar?) and a big sci-fi thing with Anne Hathaway.

I have truly learned a lot from TLo’s book.

    • Sly

Big Sci-Fi thing (Interstellar) is major Oscar bait imo.

  • Imasewsure

I’m blinded by the glare from this dress but I like it I think

  • Jennifer Schiller

I love it, although I’d probably love it a scooch more in January or February. It does feel a little dark and Christmasy.

Otherwise, it’s a truly stunning look. Total movie star siren.

    • DuBey2

      This: “Total movie star siren”

  • Herr Meier

i love pale redheads but Jessica is kind of blends with surroundings. i think she needs different hair colour

  • Little_Olive

Great dress on her, although I agree with TLo that the belt is wrong and the decorations are unconvincing.

But she is clearly able to wear a backless dress and still keep her boobs a decent distance from her chin. For that alone I am bowing down.

  • marlie

I love it. THIS is why she does so much better in saturated/jewel tones. I love everything about this dress, though I would have maybe put on a skinnier belt. But that’s a minor quibble. Attagirl.

  • StrandedFashionista

This should be on the list of things that gingers, and only gingers can wear.

  • holla

maybe the shininess of the dress make it not photograph well, but everything looks great.

  • suzq

Inside it’s gorgeous. Outside at night under the lights it’s spectacular!

  • ccinnc

Gorgeous. The dress looks like a world map.

  • JynxTheCat

5 months too earl in the season.

  • Mothra

Does she think she is Christina Hendricks?

  • queeniethebold

i think she looks beautiful. The shape of the dress is gorgeous.

  • enchanted216

Gorgeous! And I’m hoping that it is just the bangs and that she hasn’t had some work done to her face. She looks different to me. Hoping it’s just me.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Wow. Nailed it. A little Cleopatra fabulous does a girl good.

  • BLauDGaspode

Such a beautiful look, but it seems a bit heavy for the summer.

  • rhône

there’s something about the quality of the fabric that pushes this into “wrapping paper” territory — i absolutely love the colors and the shininess, especially that rich purple (my favorite). i’m kinda over the fake bangs trend but they really suit her and this look.

  • alyce1213

Gorgeous. The straightened hair and bangs work with this dress.

  • Thomas

She looks like a Byzantine empress.

  • Dagney

  • Richard

I love Mary Katranzou’s designs, but whenever people off the runway wear her stuff, they never look that great. This dress though, looks fantastic. I wish the flashes of the camera weren’t so bright, because I would love to see the details on the bust.

  • sunflower

Gorgeous! For me this is pretty much a WERQ. I just wish she’d waited until October or November to wear it. Also, I think the bangs look great on her!

  • Snoskred

I absolutely adore this in the most biggest hugest way. :) Loving the hair but I think an updo or half updo would have been a good choice here just because there is a lot of detail hidden in and around her hair there..

You are right when you say it stands out, I can’t recall seeing anything like it. I think this is a very difficult dress to wear, but lookit you Ms. Chastain rocking it like you were born to wear it. I have to imagine it looks even better in person without the flash bulbs.

  • saintebeuve

    Love! Regal *and* slinky.

  • demidaemon

I pretty much love it. But I would probably buy this wrapping paper and save it, so it’s probably a little bit of irrational liking. I still love it, though.

  • Columbinia

Love the back view, but otherwise this doesn’t do much for me. Nice that Ms. Chastain can change her look so completely.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

    Love love love

  • GemFemme

At first I wasn’t feeling it but the longer I look at it the more I dig it. I love a sequin dress that flows like liquid over the body.
    Loving her bangs too!

  • DuBey2

Best I’ve ever seen her. Can’t take my eyes off her.
At LAST: her coloring looks perfect & the dress is stunning but does NOT pull attention away from her beautiful face.

  • quiltrx

It took me this post (I couldn’t put my finger on it in the last one) to figure out it the BANGS that are confusing me. Duh. Makeup seems a little different too. I don’t dislike it, just not sure which way I prefer her.
This is a neat dress. I like it if for no other reasons than it is ‘not safe’ and she doesn’t look like everyone else.

  • Jay

I just think that she’s one of the most beautiful women in the world. And so talented! I highly recommend The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby to all the BKs who enjoy great writing and actressing.

  • Man Dala

It looks like a costume out of that cancelled Egyptian show “Hieroglyph”, or from “The Bible” when they are in Egypt. Dislike.

  • Alloy Jane

Such a shame about the wrapping paper quality of that dress because this is a much better blue for her than the chili tits dress. Digging the makeup but her hair is way too fine for that long, pin-straight look. Plus the bangs are way too long to be flattering. She’ll probably need to trim them every third day just to prevent the ends from poking her in the eye. That hair plus the wet look of her shiny dress is giving her a bedraggled quality.

  • insertclevername_ici

    Cleopatra glam

  • gefeylich

Her face is very angular and can look harsh with the wrong hairstyle. This one makes her look young, current and pretty. Good call. The dress is too foil-y for me, but it is a good color for her skin and hair.

  • Michelle Gennari

I hardly recognized her with this hair. It looks great and makes her look completely different. Really looks good. Dress…eh.
