Halle Berry in Atelier Versace on the “Late Show with David Letterman”

Posted on July 08, 2014

On the one hand, this is so her dress that no one else should be allowed to attempt it.

On the other hand, that’s a whole hell of a lot of dress for July. We realize the Letterman studio is famously freezing on the inside, but still.  It’s not just the long sleeves making it look off-season; it’s the glitter and the aubergine color and all that hardware. It’s not what you’d call a “breezy” look, is it? We can’t say she looks bad, exactly, but she doesn’t look very comfortable either. Of course that could be because she somehow found herself making the rookie mistake of being photographed in harsh sunlight with no sunglasses on. Miss Halle? Someone needs to be fired, because a killer pair of shades would probably have rendered us quiet on our complaints. And we know how important it is to most stars that they never hear of any T Lo complaints. At the very least, they would have prevented you from looking constipated in all the pictures.

Great dress, but looking at it is making me sweat.

      • leahpapa

Oy, it’s so hot in this city the very idea of walking from an air-conditioned car to a subzero theater in this dress has me schvitzing.

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

        At least it’s well-ventilated.

    • NBG

All of her dresses are too tight lately.

      • misstressofsylar

Post natal syndrome found mostly in Hollywood.

        • Leah Elzinga

          and Hollywood can keep it.

    • Danielle

It’s giving her a titscrepancy in the third picture.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Fascinating construction – I thought I was seeing skin between the rivets until I realised that’d mean she had a moulded plastic mound a la Barbie. So it’s just really well-matched lining. Sunglasses + bolder lipstick would make this a winner for me.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

The mental picture of this post is pretty awesome. :) Everyone needs a moulded plastic mound from time to time.

Much better than those C strings I recently heard about.. I think, anyway.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I saw a picture of those. Moulded plastic mound is much better!

        • marlie

I can’t even imagine someone legitimately wearing those. Never under any circumstances.

ETA: That’s not true. Maybe the ladystars have been wearing them for years with those “look at my bikini wax!” dresses.

        • kimmeister

I have not heard about these. It sounds like it might not be safe to Google at work?

          • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I think probably best googled in the safety of ones home, where one might also shudder, cringe, and scream out loud. ;)

        • CatLady

Eww, those look like a fancied-up maxi pad.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

The levels of love that I have for this sparkly, glittery thing cannot be described in our human words.

Even with the terrible titscrepancy and the fact that some of her parts are clearly trying to escape the outfit via any gap they can find. :)

    • Introspective

tight and shiny, but in a nod to age appropriateness, long-sleeved and knee length, is halle’s formula. it works, but it is incredibly off season right now.

that said, her bod is still smoking hot. for that consider me envious.

    • sienna elm

I like it, but it looks costume-y.

    • Spreecord

I think it’s time she moves on to an aesthetic that doesn’t make her look as if she’s being sewn into her dresses.

      • OffToSeeHim

Why? Maybe I’d just like to relive the glory days, but if I looked like that in this dress I’d wear it everywhere! I’d wear it to the pool, to bed, to work… I’d literally never take off something I looked that fabulous in except to shower and have it dry cleaned every once in a while.

    • PeggyOC

I’m afraid we may have to start putting her in the “Of Course” category.

    • OffToSeeHim

She is just SHIT hot. I mean, I can’t even see anything you’re talking about. I know you’re probably right, but my *entire* reaction to this is “GO GIRL!” Plus it’s so on-point for the series she’s promoting that it makes me love it even more. Atelier Versace goes “slut-wear” or “bondage” on so many ladystars, and she’s just rocking it.

    • Kent Roby

I’m so glad she didn’t leave the shoulder exposed (like the runway version); she looks pretty damn amazing.

    • smh4748

I really like this dress on her, though I could do without the skin gaps. Agree that it’s totally wrong for the season–this would KILL in October.

    • OffToSeeHim

And I love the choice she made to sew up that shoulder – I think it really improved the dress.

      • Shawn EH

They look like hooks, like the whole thing could come apart wherever you want?

        • marlie

It does look like hooks. For a moment, I wondered if the dress could have been made more seasonally appropriate by just removing the sleeves.

        • FrigidDiva

I think so, and that just makes me nervous. Like, what if she sat down wrong and the hooks just popped open? I’m sure it can’t ACTUALLY do that, but in my fevered little mind I can totally imagine that.

          • Shawn EH

“That’s a new feature, Halle,” hisses Donatella.

    • BigShamu

I’ll take a constipated Halle Berry any damn day of the week over many other regular lady stars.

    • Anna

Well, I’m glad they re-attached the shoulder for Halle. She looks great and it is *her* dress in theory, but the fact that it is *her* dress is also kinda what makes this look “meh” for me.

It’s also giving her uni-boob. Like a compression sports bra.

    • cat772

Who the hell goes out in the daytime without shades? Let alone famous movie stars who will be photographed squinting if they do??? The dress looks great on her, but it’s way way WAY too Game of Thrones-ish for summer.

    • nannypoo

It’s a bad choice for hot weather but it really suits her. I sure do hate those sleeves hanging over her hands, though.

    • FibonacciSequins

I’m sympathy-sweating just looking at those photos, but it probably looked better in the studio. It would look even better if it weren’t so tight on her.

    • Jessica Freeman

Can’t deny she looks fabulous, but this is not reading summer at all.

    • Sam Smith

Too, too heavy for July. And I hate to see lady stars squint, break out some fab shades.

    • boweryboy

I wanna like it. I love Halle. But all I see is tacky tacky tacky.

    • Alyssa

I love that color, but this is not a summer dress. However, I’m glad to see an appropriate length dress, even if it is too tight.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the dress, but I am wishing for a bit more lip color

    • MaggieMae

Oh, that is SO her dress.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

This would have been one of those times when it would make sense to wear something different walking in and change into this for the show – because it is totally night time and totally Halle. Don’t watch Letterman much… this wasn’t her walking in dress, was it??

    • mjude

I’m sorry its July & humid. maybe in the fall I would care.

    • TM

Oh hey, Catwoman. (Too soon? Of course it is.)

    • SugarSnap108

I am sweating on her behalf.

    • Shawn EH

Love it, and those shoes, despite looking sort of like furniture, are really nice. Couldn’t she have rummaged in her own shade closet for a sunny day?

    • jonnyf8

She’s a little old for this isn’t she?

    • ShaoLinKitten

Halle Berry is the one celebrity that always strikes me with awe at her beauty, even when she’s wearing something wack. This isn’t wack, but it is off season. She has the most slammin’ bod in Hollywood and only gets more attractive with age, IMO. I hope Extant is good, because I need a reason to watch her every week.

      • marlie

I SO hope her show is good. *crosses fingers*

    • marlie

I think she looks HAWT. The dress suits her to a T, though it’s definitely meant for another season. But I’m giving it a pass, because I hope this is an indications that Miss Halle is back to impressing us on the red carpet, instead of making us weep.

ETA: I also love those shoes. Please send them my way. Kthxbye.

    • elemspbee

hmm i don’t know if she has the corner on this dress. I imagine Lucy Liu or J’Lo can render this dress an eyeful.

      • ballerinawithagun

Maybe Lucy, JLo would shorten it, unhook more hooks and make it tacky.

        • elemspbee

          totes!

    • Lauren Frankel

Kinda appropriate for the sci-fi show she’s promoting now.

    • Judy_J

I want those shoes. And yes, a pair of killer shades would have definitely taken this up a notch or two.

    • Cheryl

Yeah, they’re right, it is off season, and she does need sunglasses, but despite that she looks pretty great. I like that she didn’t undo the hooks on the shoulder.

      • conlakappa

She wore it on the show. It looked different. Shimmery and sheer was the vibe I got from seeing it in motion.

    • JasmineAM

Why does her make up artist always give her grey brows?

      • Constant Reader

I was wondering the same thing.

    • Betsy

Spring, summer, winter, fall –it doesn’t matter. That, my friends, is a BODY worth celebrating.

    • Tee

She can wear that sweatbox now because all the stores have their “back to school” crap up. Look for snow bunny suits by Labor Day!

    • MarissaLG

Plus. she looks like she’s wearing a toupee.

    • Clydette Wantland

She appears to have plenty of air conditioning holes built into the dress so perhaps it wasn’t too hot for her?

    • MissusBee

Sigh. I’d like to see her interpret bodycon in a more crisp, elegant way. She is Academy Award Winner and Game Changer Halle Berry, goddammit. The whole age-defying sex kitten thing is way beneath her. Lupita and Sandra Bullock need to stage an intervention. Maybe get George Clooney involved. (I imagine he’d be good in these situations.)

    • Janet B

Wonder how long it took to get into the dress.

    • msdamselfly

Her skin looks so orange and her hair so dull. The dress looks too tight and tacky. IT looks elegant on the model.

    • http://www.domesticdisturbia.com/ Christi Wampler

      Her hair looks not good.

    • MM4321

Her makeup artist must have used all the bronzer on her face and neck, and forgot her cleavage.

The dress is totally her, but I’d love to see her change it up once in a while. A looser, softer dress would be a lovely surprise.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

      Of course.

    • http://cakesandcakesvintage.blogspot.com cakesandcakesvintage

This just weirdly ages her, which seems impossible because she is one of those beautiful women who NEVER AGES. Girl, you still got it, no need go all cougar on us like this.

    • decormaven

Props to her- that last photo is proof positive she still has the goods.

    • deb

Hm. Kind of looks like she’s repurposing old catwoman costumes…..

    • GeoDiva

It looked really beautiful on camera last night. In the sunlight…. just okay.

    • evave2

Thank you for putting the left shoulder back on. It works as a nighttime dress, sort of glisteny I can’t tell what the material is I first thought leather, but then I thought it might be some kind of rubberine-type stuff. It looks better on Halle than the model. LOVE the shoes.

But don’t you think sunglasses would look weird TOO? Just best not to be photographed in that light. I’ve seen other people walking into the Ed Sullivan and it didn’t look that harsh. Time of day? Excessive sun?

    • NinjaCate

All I see is Catwoman. And that’s not good.

    • frannyprof

It’s summer. Did she not get the memo? Also, her boobs look all squashy. Whoever did this to her should be fired.

    • MightyMarshal

She could have undone a few clips at the shoulder (like on the runway) and taken the sleeve up a few clips to make it more summer ready but damn girl that dress is yours to keep because no one else can do it justice like you can.

    • KT

I’m confused — that middle slit goes right past her…. other slit… but where art thou, Halle’s vagine?

    • livesarah

Yeah, where I come from, that is a Winter dress. Even if long sleeves are necessary, a different colour and fabric would have worked better… So, a different dress altogether, basically. And a size up, too. Halle Berry is tiny, but this just goes to show that designers never produce anything for a women with a vaguely curvy shape.

    • Jecca2244

i feel like this is the dress you wear on the show, but not the one you walk in wearing…

    • Imasewsure

Gorgeous woman with really really tacky taste. Versace plus Halle all the way

    • JynxTheCat

      Damn she is SO tacky.

    • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

      Her hair looks TERRIBLE!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

This time of year, all ladystars being photographed in strong light should be deploying a fabulous pair of designer shades. Halle is doing her best to work this, though.
