IN or Out: Zosia Mamet at Museum Of The Moving Image Event

Posted on June 12, 2014

It takes a special talent to make a shocking pink dress look a little drab.

Okay, maybe we’re being a little harsh. We’re not inclined to love the shape of this dress. It’s almost generic in its shape. Plus: satin. Generic and satin are not two words one wants to hear when one is desperate to impress T Lo, as Miss Zosia almost certainly is. We’re pretty sure it keeps her awake at night.

Having said that, she’s polished, put together, inoffensive in her style and she looks relatively happy to be there. Should we just take our little victories where we can get them or are we wrong to expect more?

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! It’s bright! She’s smiling! Let’s just call this one a win.

OUT! Peggy Olson on a blind date.

The Bitter Kittens tried to rally behind Robin Wright’s Amish Hipster Girl getup, but ultimately, the vote came down to OUT.

  • NMMagpie

    Shiny house dress. Out.

    • Cathy S

      Yes. Out.

  • schadenfreudelicious

“You really can repurpose a bridesmaid’s dress, see!”…

    • bitchybitchybitchy

As a matter of fact, my one and only bridesmaid dress was very similar to this color, and I think it was a chiffon overlay of either taffeta or satin.

      • schadenfreudelicious

I recall being a “junior bridesmaid” for a winter wedding when i was about 10, the dress was this exact colour, in an almost identical style (in velvet rather than satin)…we had rabbit fur muffs in lieu of flowers..

      • Oh my, I had a bridesmaid dress this color, too. At the end of the wedding, I stopped at McDonald’s to change and it remained balled up in the trunk of my car for months afterward.

        • Sharon Weiner

And this one looks wrinkled, like she tried to smooth out the dress in your trunk!

  • Glam Dixie

Smock. Horrid highlighter pink, satin smock. Oh, and OUT.

    • Trent

Totally agree. How does she look simultaneously childish and matronly? OUT.

      • Rhonda Shore

Yes, the problem is the shape and also the length. THat’s what makes it drab, though i’ll admit to not being a big fan of an all-pink Pepto-Bismol colored dress. OUT

      • FuhUgh

She’s like “The Cooler” (William H. Macy movie) of fashion.

  • macwell

It’s crazy how this chick can both make an outfit/look, look drab, but put her in something is in her wheelhouse, and she can almost make you forget that she is a designer’s worst nightmare….:(

    • wisdomy

In fairness to her, aside from the color, the dress is dismally drab. Terrible shape.

  • James

    OUT! Hiddy!

  • Aidan B

Out. Terrible shiny fabric, terrible neckline, terrible overall shape, boring shoes.

  • Miss Disco

it looks like something i wore at a primary school party. it’s stranger that someone not really meaty could find a dress so sacklike. i’d like to see it on christina hendricks, just for comparison

    • demidaemon

It does need someone to fill it out, per say.

  • Sarah

Out. Dress = no, and do something with your hair, girl.

    • Passionflora

She must have not have had the time to do her hair.

      • Sarah

        She never do.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The dress at a minimum needed some decent accessories to make it less generic, and yes, please Ms. Mamet, put a teensy bit more effort into your hair when you’re making a appearance.

    • demidaemon

That hair! It’s nearly as bad as the dress.

      • Sarah

I was really examining her head, and I think with her long cheeks and pretty eyes, it would be nice to see her with an up-do, or maybe even a short cut with some body on top.

        • demidaemon

It needs some definite life put into it. I like your suggestions, as they will be anything better than what she has done right now, which looks like it approaches “got up and left without touching a brush” territory.

  • Hrfe

OUT. Even though I truly believe if she improved her posture it would be an IN.

  • Thomas

IN. Despite it being satin, she looks polished and she doesn’t look dour. We must take our victories when we can get them with this one, however small they might be.

    • evave2

I think this is the best she has ever looked. I agree that the shape is generic “dress” but maybe “generic dress” fits her figure best.

  • LeelaST

OUT. That dress is bridesmaid horror-level fabric/color and does nothing for her. Not liking the hair or clutch.

  • kimmeister

OUT for the dress and hair. The clutch is cute though.

  • kbshee

Out. Bad length, bad fit, hair needs a rethink.

  • Crystal

This is AWFUL. Fifth grade dance dress.

  • Artesian_Belle

It’s an out for me, but I’m curious how the designer intended it to fit. It looks way too big on her, like it needs to be taking in a couple inch at the waist – but maybe it’s supposed to look like that?

    • lizajane1776

And the bustline needs about 1.5 inches more. Tailors are not the enemy!
Nor is someone who teaches her to stand up straight. I think her pose is a great deal of the problem.
She feels good, you can tell by the shiny eyes and the smile, but it just is a bad dress and even Happy Zosia can’t elevate it. (Hot Pink Satin? Oh, hell no!)

  • Cheryl

A reluctant in for me. It’s too shiny, too long, and I wish it fit better. But on the Zozia scale, it’s a win.

  • Mothra

    Not well fitted bridesmaid dress.

  • enchanted216

OUT. She is not polished or put together. The dress looks off the rack and needs a good steaming.

  • nancymae

Pink satin with wavy wrinkles. So OUT. But her haircut is a nice change from the depression middle part so not a total fail.

  • Lilithcat

That is boring! It’s shocking pink, and it’s boring. How does that happen?

And I really want to kidnap her and drag her to a decent hairdresser.

  • Trickytrisha

I’ll give her a qualified IN ’cause this is way better than usual. On anyone else it would have been out.

  • MW

OUT. The dress is plain ugly. Keep the clutch and start again.

  • majorbedhead

Her hair is a mess, the dress is hideous, and she has the posing skills of, well, me. So, OUT.

  • Belvane

    Out. Middle-school Home Ec project.

  • marlie

OUT. The dress is too shapeless and wrinkled. I appreciate that she’s smiling, though.

    • ktr33

      but barely!

  • Danielle

Good Lord, OUT. Miss Mennonite 2005.

  • butterflysunita

OUT. Even for a bridesmaid’s dress that’s ugly.

  • quiltrx

OUT. The waist seaming is interesting, but it’s wasted on that shiny fabric and sack-dress shape.

  • dmkava

That’s so Bushwick girl aka Brooklyn, where is where she lives now I guess

    • ktr33

      no, it’s not. at all.

      • dmkava

Bushwick girl plays dress up. Yes. Seen it many times.

        • ktr33

Sure, dress-up, but not in a pink satin Barbie bridesmaid ill-fitting sack. Unless she’s Hannah on girls, I.e., completely clueless. 🙂

          • dmkava

that’s what I mean–it feels like something the young girls I know in Bushwick would do–throw on an ill-fitting sack-and not care! ((maybe not this dress per se) As opposed to women I know in other parts of the city who would never.

  • LuluBI

  • Kbear

OUT – It looks like an old bridesmaid dress. She is smiling, but still is standing in that same “coffin” position.

  • traceyishere

    She looks like diet candy.

  • sienna elm

the shape is horrible – out

  • AzulFashion

  • d4divine

Out! That dress looks like a second year fashion school project

  • JP

OUT. Not even Peggy Olson — stick a pimply, slouchy dude in a suit behind her and she’s a teen at the sophomore dance.

  • IN! It’s bright! She’s smiling! Let’s just call this one a win. 😉

  • mmhmm

The dress bunches under her arms. And she needs to do something with her hair.

  • KendraMR

    OUT to the highest degree.

  • conniemd

Out. This dress belongs on a woman with a smile and some animation and fun on her. Clearly she has no clue who she wants to portray in her styling. She is all over the place. I don’t think this even deserves an attagirl, because it’s such a Girl This is Not Your dress. Personally I think she should study Florence Welch. I also think she would look good in some Tilda Swinton type lady pants and long coats in autumnal and subdued colors.

  • demidaemon

This might be the dumpiest pink satin dress I have ever seen. Her hair is not helping. OUT.

  • colleenjanel

My Barbies had a dress that looked just like that. Even had all the wrinkles from being tossed in a shoebox with all the other Barbie dresses and accessories.

  • Courtney

Maybe if she had tried to do something with it to help it along. A belt, some funky jewelry, something. As it is, OUT. Shapeless, shiny, and sad.

  • Just Me

No, no, noooooooo. Can’t unsee. So sad. Sadly out.

  • Jangle57

Amazing that hot pink can look so frumpy on someone – OUT

  • SophieCollier

It looks like a cheap halloween store fabric. OUT.

  • Shalhevet

OUT. Not her color, frumpy unflattering shape, cheap looking fabric.

  • frannyprof

OUT. So dowdy, frumpy, and sad.

  • prisma

    Stand up straight! OUT.

  • OUT. Even Peggy looked better, though it does remind me of her hoping-for-a-proposal dress.

  • nyll18

  • Call me Bee

It’s a cute dress, and she has the right shoes and bag, but you’re right. It’s drab. Drab because 1.) her hair and 2.) the fact that she’s just standing there like a schlep. Ya gotta have a little…oomph when you’re wearing a cute little dress. She has none.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

      Well said.

  • LadyVimes

Boring and satin. It needs chunky jewelry and a belt at least, but that neckline is pretty irredeemable.

  • Lori

Out. I want to encourage her to wear colors and look not-miserable on the red carpet, but I can’t get behind the satin. Remember folks, satin is only one letter away from satan. Not a coincidence. Also, shape-wise this is kind of boring.

Sorry, Zosia. Keep it up with the color any way.

  • sunflower

OUT. She’s the “funky” member of the bridal party at a morman wedding

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Out. But if she were eight, it would be in.

  • Yoshio

  • uprightcitizen

OUT, bless her heart. She looks kind of like when your tomboy cousin has to be in your sister’s wedding, and all she can think about is getting back into her t-shirt and jeans, so she can go ride her horse. Cute girl, sad dress.

  • Katie Graham

Sorry, every time I see her, and, frankly, most of the Girls cast, I just see nepotism personified. Makes it difficult to pay attention to her dress….

  • Whever

My god, it’s like bad Princess Peach cosplay.

  • MandyM

This looks like a sad dress from my daughters’ dress up clothes. You know the one none of them will ever wear because it’s too ugly? Yeah, that one.

  • dash1211

Out. I think the dress is blushing with shame.

  • Leah Elzinga

if she would just pull her freaking shoulders back, the whole shape of this dress would improve.

    • JauntyJohn

      I know, right?
This one makes me NUTS with that.

  • Well, that certainly looks home-sewn.

  • FibonacciSequins

Princess dress from the costume box. It’s like literally all she did was put on this dress and a pair of black heels and called it a day. The sad thing is, she looks happy with the result. A reluctant OUT because I don’t want to discourage her from experimenting, but this was not a success.

  • greymain

    So OUT…,

  • alyce1213

Out. Looks cheap and home-sewn, and she doesn’t have the presence to overcome it. That color satin is only for costumes, parades.

  • ktr33

OUT. It doesn’t fit, and she’s barely smiling. She’s slouching. She looks dumpy. I don’t even get out how this could be anything but an Out.

  • alliekat9090

    N O

  • travelingcat

Out – it may be an improvement, but not there yet.

  • Aurumgirl

It is not Peggy Olsen on a blind date. It’s Queen Elizabeth on a blind date.

    • Gatto Nero

All she needs is the hat, sensible shoes, and a frame handbag.

  • Richard Banger

OUT! Peggy Olson after a blind date (depressed, slouching on a couch while Julio is watching TV next to her)

  • smh4748

Out. The color isn’t the problem here, but the fabric and its “wrinkles” (I guess? Can a dress have cellulite?– because it sort of looks like the answer to that is yes) and its fit and its blandness are emphatically out.

Cute clutch though. And I think I like her hairstyle.

  • WittyCism

Sorry baby girl, you’re trying, but not this way, okay? Out.

  • Sherry N. Sutton

Out. Can she please do something with her hair?

  • swissgirl

Out. Absolutely. It is so much like my 8th grade dance dress. And i’m, shall we say, upper middle aged.

  • ShaoLinKitten

It’s very Bridesmaid Dress Reject Pile. OUT.

  • MilaXX

OUT! I appreciate the effort, but wrinkled, homemade bridesmaid dresses are never getting an IN from me.

  • Gatto Nero

Shiny, shapeless, and dowdy. This isn’t anyone’s dress.

  • Jacob Bowen

The bodice-skirt proportions look very wrong…that waist looks too low and it is REALLY bothering me!

  • altalinda

    Oh, Out.

  • Shelby

Her face looks lovely, but that dress is awful. Out.

  • nannypoo

It’s frumpy and cheap looking. The color is awful, it doesn’t fit, it needs a belt, it’s not flattering, it’s too long, her hair’s a mess, and the rings are tacky. I don’t mind the shoes. So, to summarize, it’s out.

  • Lisa_Co

    As usual, OUT.

  • anotherkate

I think it’s just actually too big for her. She is quite wee–it looks like there’s a good 4 inches of extra fabric all around her waist. That said, I will never love that shade of pink rendered in satin–too Barbie.

  • theotherjdekay

    Oh so, so, Out!!

  • Man Dala

OUT. The shape of that dress is hideous.

  • Imasewsure

I’m going IN… I hate satin and it’s a bit drab but I think she looks good overall. Her hair and makeup even force me to forgive the Pepto pink of the dress. Major steps

  • ashtangajunkie

OUT. This dress is a bummer.

  • Betsy

In. She didn’t forget her pants, and is semi-smiling.

  • gefeylich

    Shiny Pepto Bismol. Out.

  • boweryboy

IN. Only because she’s smiling and I kinda like her hair.

  • Lulu

Out. It is too long, and knee length, unless in a fitted skirt, is rarely anything but matronly. And what is up with the extraneous zigzag seaming at the hip line that points to the crotch? Just. Fugly. Also, girl, stop cutting your hair yourself with the kitchen scissors.

  • Lilyana_F

    Out. Horrible fabric.

  • KiP07

Out. We’ve seen better from her. If this were more fitted, had a different neckline (or at least a necklace?), and/or a different sleeve length I could maybe budge on this as a small victory. Plus I can’t shake the feeling that this is what barbie would wear while inducing labor.

  • Danielle West

Out. Looks like she got it from KMart.

  • Constant Reader

I keep thinking she needs a statement necklace or earrings, but then I think that would make the dress look more matronly. Zosia, sweetie, if a little sparkle can’t jazz up a dress, it’s beyond help. OUT.

  • She needed a skinny belt and a statement necklace. Besides that, she looks cute. Kinda blah but cute.

  • MannahattaMamma

Oh honey. Someone is playing really mean tricks on you. Shiny hot-pink satin in a unflattering bulge-at-the-hips is the friend of no human being alive. Not even Tilda or Cate could pull off this monstrosity.

  • KayEmWhy

Out, it’s too big on her. She should have worn a belt.

  • TerryMH

There are no words for how horrible this is – OUT

  • OffToSeeHim

    No. Ew. Out.

  • carnush

Nice color but too frumpy. Needs a denim jacket or something. OUT.

  • Robyn Garrett

Yeah, this has Mormon bridesmaid dress written all over it. OUT.

  • I can’t get behind a single component of this look. Hate the color, hate the material, hate her non-hairstyle, hate her makeup (if in fact there is any), boring shoes. Plus why the aversion to a pair of earrings that people could actually see? She may be smiling but the subtext is: I don’t like this, not one bit.

OK, I take it back, I do like the kicky little purse, but still: OUT.

  • decormaven

Out. Gals on the cell block in Orange Is the New Black sport better hair than this.

  • mjude

  • luludexter

out, except the minaudière, I like that…

  • CT14

  • MissFern

PEGGY OLSON ON A BLIND DATE. I love you guys.

  • No.

  • Introspective

all the way the fuck out.

  • suzq

Out. We don’t even know who the designer is and may never know.

  • FrigidDiva

OUT, the black pumps and zebra-striped clutch are a little too cutesy with that hot-pink satin dress. Just re-reading that makes me think of an outfit a 7-year-old would pick out for someone to wear.

  • @Biting Panda

IN. This is ironic hipster dressing, but as it seems to make her genuinely happy, I am all for it. For her. Only. ONLY HER.

  • Jennifer McGuire

    Out out out.

  • AlisonS

OUT. Even if she stood up straight it would still look horrible.

  • Mailbtch

More like Peggy Olson got dressed for a date while temporarily blind… OUT.

  • BLauD

Out. It looks about 3 sizes too big for her. I’m not sure a better fit would even help, as Barbie satin dresses belong on Barbie dolls only.
She does look happy, but even that can’t garner enough points to bring it in.

  • Julie Chase

OUUUUUUUT. Shapeless and heavy and GAH.

  • Bradio311

Oooooout! The dress is making HER look drab!

  • lalahartma

    In, for her.

  • NBG

OUT – Looks like it was made at the “Learn To Sew” class they offer on Thursday nights at my local library.

  • miscorrections

One should never wear a fabric so flammable it necessitates the packing of a fire retardant blanket. Out.

  • Out. The oversized shapelessness of the dress’s bottom half ruins it for me. Her hair looks great, though.

  • B_C_J

OUT! The dress is in desperate need of being fitted & the hair would be appropriate if one is doing laundry in the privacy of one’s home.

  • Raspberry2012

Out out out out OUT! Shocking pink does not make the whole outfit, girl! You need to style yourself!

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

OUT—this looks like a dress I used to put on my Barbie.

  • Heather

It looks like the cut of a choir dress I had in high school. OUT

  • ellabob

    Oh god no…

  • luluransom

    Expect more, Uncles. OUT.

  • Lisalady161

Hiddy dress, but the rest of her is cute. In.

  • littlestars

Frump city. The neckline + shiny (and wrinkled) material + poor fit = really unflattering. The only thing I like is the color. And I think her hair looks great – love the cut and color, though I think a slightly more polished face is needed to pull off this hair with a dressier look (opening up the neckline would help make it look more elegant too).

  • Out. Dress, awful. Hair, hideous.

  • Shawn EH

I’m thinking a really gaudy black jet necklace, or at the very least too many pearls, might have helped. But I’m still IN!

  • AlexisPayne

  • Terri Terri

    thumbs down

  • Mona_Visa

I know I may live to regret this, but I’m giving this an IN. She seems happy and comfortable and I think she looks kinda pretty.

  • Dreamwr8tr

My mother would approve of the hemline; my father would approve of the neckline. And they would love this for a date night dress with the very nice young man who they hope will marry their single daughter

  • Mousentrude

Out. That neckline with sleeves that length always seems dull to me: just looks like a casual t-shirt, even when it’s in horrifically shiny pink.

  • Fuchsiaforever

  • OUT. I’ve seen better combovers on 70-year-old men.

  • Uncle Spike

The hair is unfortunate. It’s not her color. But the chiropractor in me wants to tell her to roll those shoulders back, and start a rhomboid strengthening routine. If she could do that, her posture would be immeasurably improved, and so would her chances of getting an “in” with this dress. As it is, I can say nothing but “out.” (NOTE: I realize this veers dangerously close to the realm of criticizing physical appearance. But I believe my criticism is more under the theme of working a dress, and Zosia just isn’t working this. The dress is wearing her.)

  • *crickets*

    Shoulders back, dammit!!

  • cat772

In, but it seems too be a tad too big. She looks really pretty, and I like the shoes.

  • unbornfawn

Cheap looking fabric. Needs a belt and jewelry. The frizzy hair doesn’t help. OUT.

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

In, I think I’m shocked that her eyebrow game is under control and she seems happy!

  • melanie0866

Young lady, stand up straight. Put your shoulders back. Stop slouching! And did you iron that dress like I told you to? Because it’s all wrinkled. And did you even comb your hair? I swear, next time I am just leaving you at home.

  • pivia

Blind Peggy Olson on a date… OUT

  • annla

    Out. Schmatta.

  • Kate4queen

    Out -sorry

  • Sharon Weiner

  • Elana Bryan

    Hideous….really not good.

  • CNM

OUT. Why is it so wrinkled?? It must be intentional because it is so evenly wrinkled throughout.

  • Jenna Marie

  • Mojone

    Poor dress has all the unflattering flaws: little circle neckline that shortens the neck;
short sleeves that stop exactly at the bustline and widens the look; and a length that
makes sense only if the wearer had thunder thighs or baggy knees; and an unflattering
dayglo color, which combined with the hi-sheen is hard to look out w/o sunglasses.
    But, Zosia looks cute inspiteof.

  • Brittany

    Outsies. Gross.

  • Dave Hime

It looks very sister-wife to me. As though it was made for her by the closeted choir director or something…

  • DoctorBelle

    Out! Amish dress gone wrong!

  • jkatkins

Must agree with the bitterest of kittens tonight. OUT.

  • ThaliaMenninger

OUT. Sorry. At least this one makes it look like she’s sort of trying. But it just doesn’t fit well.

  • Out. Shapeless. Little girl in big sister’s prom dress.

  • Why do I see her in a Park Avenue temple?

  • jif

OUT to it all – dress, accessories, posture…

  • Kelly

Out. The hair is terrible, and the shape/style of that dress is totally 1960s grandmother. And too big to boot.

  • MaryMcClelland

OUT – if by polished you mean high-gloss shiny, because I really think the fit is terribly off. And she needs something brighter on the face also it seems the proportions are a bit wonky.

  • Michelle Gennari

Ugh. This child always looks like a streak of misery. Like it’s un-hip to look neat and polished. Geeze Louise.

  • bailey

    OUT. wrinkled & horrible length

  • ChelseaNH

It’s not bad enough to be out.

  • sagecreek

Ugh. I just got my Master’s Degree in Records Management, and mom and dad are taking me to Red Lobster!

    Also, stand up straight, Zosia.

  • JimiG

Out! Middle school show choir. Handed down from the previous two school years.

  • SorayaS

Not convinced it it her dress and even if it was I vote OUT for such poor styling- that dress needs bold accessories! The clutch was a good start but much more effort needed to be put in on that front.

  • Columbinia

OUT. Peggy Olson on a blind date is exactly right. For all the seaming and structure, the top hangs on her like a t-shirt.

  • RutGot

The very definition of schmatta. Out.

  • StarburstLady

This looks like one of those dresses that you buy partly as a joke from a vintage store, and then hang in the back of your closet for a year because, really, there’s no real reason to wear it. It’s got those ignored dress wrinkles and everything. And her hair looks hiddy. OUT.

  • Trishington

    Frumpton Comes Alive. Out.

  • Trishington

    Oh, and hair is abominable.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OUT. Shiny AND Dowdy – how is that possible? Also, the hair.

  • Amel

There is not a time or place that this dress could even get near good-looking. It makes me want to advocate unisex jumpsuits for every celebrity just to avoid this precise mix of boring and ugly from ever happening again.
