WERQ: Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein Collection at the 2014 Maui Film Festival

Now THAT is what we call a course correction.

Her last few red carpet appearances have not been, shall we say, awe-inspiring. Which is perhaps not fair, but she set the style bar pretty high for herself, so people (us) were bound to be disappointed when she makes less-than-fabulous choices.

But this is all perfect for her, top to bottom. Even the matchiness works, since she’s pretty much established it as her “thing.” Now if we could all just convince her to wear sandals more often, since they look so much better on her than those high-vamp or pointy-toed pumps she favors. This is pure elegance and chic.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

      LOVE.

      • Mrs. Julien

        LOVE. LOVE.

    • melvel

I need those shoes in my life!

      • majorbedhead

Me too, although I’d have to sit around lounging elegantly, since walking in them would probably make me break my ankles.

    • TM

      Back to form!
(Even if I find the nail polish a bit too much, I’ll stop because I truly am so so so grateful.)

    • RussellH88

I love this so hard. She was made for bright, graphic colors.

    • @Biting Panda

      Never doubt, bitches.

    • Courtenay P

oh god yes. yes yes yes yes YES YES YES. praise the LAWD.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

She’s GLOWING! That Hawaiian sun is doing her some good.

    • NBG

Could it be? Lupita in fab shoes? I need my smelling salts. Cannot handle the perfection.

    • clatie

Thank heavens!!! Does anyone know who dresses her? So curious.

      • Courtenay P

        Michaela Erlanger

        • clatie

          Thank you so much!! :-)

      • Rhonda Shore

Exactly my thought, thank goodness! LOVE.

    • alyce1213

She wears bright colors so well. This is beautiful. I wish the pretty sandals fit better.

    • mjude

      love.

    • Thomas

Thank God. I was starting to worry.

    • sienna elm

I love that turquoise/orange colour combo! The silhouette shape on the front of the dress is amazing too. I know it’s matchy, but would love to have seen a pop of the cobalt from the shoes in her jewelry. The nails I could have done without, but why quibble?

      • jtabz

No, you’re right — a bold lapis lazuli ring would have been gorgeous with this.

    • Jennifer Schiller

I dunno. I actually haven’t hated what she’s been in as much recently, but…

While I love the sporty shape and colors on her, and the makeup and hair are flawless, I will never get on board with that hem and sandals together. Everything else is so matchy (which is totally fine), that the second blue in the sandals is jarring so close to the dress. I love the sandals but I don’t think they go here at all.

      • Imasewsure

I’m with you… love the idea more than the final product

      • fursa_saida

My problem is just the hem. I want to hack a good six inches off it.

        • Jennifer Schiller

Agreed. I think I might not mind the random blue shade in the sandal, despite all of the other matchiness, if there was just some leg in between. Although to be fair I still don’t know if I would love matching everything but one shade of blue. Her shoulders are fab though.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I’m thinking a silver or gold sandal would have worked better for this outfit. Those Jimmy Choo ones we have been seeing every woman and their dog in for the past year would probably have worked. :) I too am not a fan of that blue. I can see why the stylist thought these matched because of the green in the sole, and they work ok but a silver or gold would have taken this out into space, for me anyway. :)

    • NMMagpie

      STUH-NING.

    • ktr33

Now we’re cooking with gas, as my grandmother used to say. Phew!

      • kimmeister

Was your grandmother Australian, by any chance?

        • AnguaVonUberwald

My mom and I both say this, and we’re from Ohio. I guess it is a truly world-wide idiom!

          • kimmeister

Interesting! I’ve only known one person who ever said that (my Australian HR VP), so that’s why I asked. I’ve lived in OR, WA, and CA and have never heard it from anyone else.

            • TropiCarla

Very popular phrase in Trinidad & Tobago too. :-)

            • Sartorial_She

I live in WA and have been known to use the phrase.

        • mlurve

My very Italian grandmother says it too!

      • Yolanda

My grandmother said the same (and I say it as well).

      • jilly_d

My husband also says this, and it’s one of my favorite colloquialisms of his. Perhaps only second to “It’s raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock.” LOL we are from Iowa, in case you couldn’t tell.

    • carnush

I wish she had picked nail polish to match the orange shade in her dress, rather than the blue. That’s my only quibble.

      • kimmeister

That, or change the clutch color to the orange.

    • Anna

She’s making that hem length work and I can’t even hate on the matchiness, down to the nails. Love how the placement of the colour-blocking accentuates her athletic figure, this is absolutely perfect.

    • Aliu

All is right with the world again!

    • MoHub

      She’s ba-ack!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

      Phew!

    • FibonacciSequins

      Bow down.

    • KendraMR

I actually applauded when I saw this! I love it from head to toe. Also I have a similar nail color; it’s Turquoise and Caicos by Essie. I wonder if she’s wearing it.

    • kimmeister

I don’t think I’ve ever noticed her butt before, but it appears to be fabulous!

      • majorbedhead

I was thinking the same thing. Girl has a gorgeous tush.

    • smayper

It’s the most fabulous swimsuit ever, rendered as a dress. And that’s a GOOD thing. She looks like a cross between Olympic athlete and fashion goddess. Moreover, she looks thoroughly comfortable If she ditched the shoes, she could do a triathlon. (I think I must have triathlons on the brain).

      • Anna

I love the athletic look to it too!

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Its really just plain perfect. (sighs happily)

    • Glam Dixie

Holy crap, I like her shoes and she isn’t wearing blue eye shadow. This is a good day.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I would have loved to see turquoise eye shadow – the darker colour from the dress. She is born to wear bright eye shadow, something many of us can only dream of. :)

    • gitchygitchymama

      calvin knocks off posh spice.

    • http://brianfortedesigns.com/ BForte

Yes yes yes yes yes…. she is SERVING it!

    • Sara__B

If lovely Lupita can wear matchy-matchy and get a WERQ from the uncles, I have hope that soon this ordinary mortal will be brave and confident enough to wear it, too. I was raised matchy-matchy, and I still like it!

      • @Biting Panda

When I was growing up, my very Julia Sugarbaker-esque mother was the absolute queen of the accessories matching. Her clothes were hung by colors, her shoes and purses paired on the shelves. My stepfather became extremely great at Christmas shopping for her. As she would open the perfect lilac handbag and heels combo, he would tell us of his struggles to find her Spring colors while shopping in November.
I will always be a fan and my nod to her is that I always wear two pieces of jewelry that match in some way.

        • decormaven

          Wow! Props to your mom.

          • @Biting Panda

You would have loved her. She was whip fast with her whit, a Southern lady, a sports fan, and a prolific cusser.

            • Yolanda

As all fine ladies of the South should be. She sounds wonderful.

            • decormaven

That sounds pretty much like me, with a little less emphasis on sports fan.

        • kimmeister

I hang my clothes by type and color too. I wouldn’t be able to find anything, ever, if I did it any other way.

        • Kayceed

Your mother’s approach makes perfect sense. (Which means, yes, my closet looks like this.)

        • Grumpy Girl

Now I am inspired. Just this morning I was thinking I needed to clean my closet this weekend. Now I know how I will (try to) arrange it. If only there were more space . . .

      • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

        I’m definitely on Team Matchy.

        • random_poster

Matchy is an art-form when properly deployed, as evidenced here by Lupita.

          • teensmom99

I also think that non-matchy is more a red carpet thing. It can look odd to be so matched on the carpet but sometimes in real life the pop of color will look odder.

    • PastryGoddess

      Y to the E to the S.

      YAAAS HUNTY!!!

    • decormaven

Gorgeous, HTT. She couldn’t resist those shoes- the colors were calling her name.

      • kimmeister

They’re also not perfectly matchy either. Only the aqua matches. The other 2 new colors introduced in the shoe just “go.”

    • teensmom99

I can’t believe the uncles are giving her a pass on the length (it’s a length I’m fine with). And yes, she makes the matchiness work. I think with such a light sandal it’s really fine.

    • suzq

Gorgeous. Lupita can wear all the sandals she wants. My dogs, on the other hand, should never see the light of day. That said, her shoes look to be a size bigger than her feet.

      • Judy_J

I agree. Shoes should have been a size smaller.

      • Yolanda

I’m happy her toes aren’t spilling over like poor Julianne Moore’s always seem to do.

        • teensmom99

I don’t think the shoes are too big. I think you want a little toe room . ..

    • mmebam

Chop the hem to just below the knee.

      • Coleen

Cosign. I was just about to comment that!

      • SugarSnap108

That hem is the only thing keeping me from full-on loving this on her.

    • Lori

I’m pretty sure that this is the first time I’ve looked at her and thought, “Cute shoes!” Truly, this is a red letter day. I think this is just generally good and that she looks great. The dress would look better shorter, but that odd length is the thing right now so I can’t really blame her for it.

    • Alyssa

All is right in the fashion universe again! Love those shoes!

    • Dagney

      Love!!

    • BLauD

I love this. Orange is my absolutely favorite color, and with that turquoise, it’s divine on Lupita.
Only wish it was a bit shorter. I’m not a fan of that length and find it awkward.

      • Wink

That length — hitting at the calf — usually makes the legs look stumpy. A few inches shorter would have been perfect.

    • Carleenml

matchy matchy being her “thing” is really a hoot.

    • Imasewsure

Huh…I don’t like this at all… oh well, I’ll be over here in the corner by myself…

    • Judy_J

      Lovely. I’m so relieved.

    • marlie

She looks fantastic. And I can’t imagine a better color palette for Hawaii. And for real, I COVET those shoes. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever said that about Lupita.

    • Danielle

      SLAY GIRL SLAY

    • smh4748

Oh my goodness, this is breathtaking! Love, love, love, love, love!

I really wish I owned that dress. :(

    • JP

All is right in the world again.

    • warontara

I love this. I hate the nail color, but I can overlook that because SHE IS IN FAB SHOES!!

    • Tanya Wade

Thank GAWD. I was getting scared there for a bit. Tiffany Blue and Blood Orange is one of my favorite color combos, and she’s rocking it. Shoes are killer. And a gorgeous mani/pedi. Do this all the time, mmmkay?

    • Julie Chase

      Gorgeous. GIVE ME THOSE SHOES.

    • SewingSiren

Beautiful. I have an antique Zuni cuff that I would love to lend her for this look. She doesn’t really need it, but I’d be willing to lend it never the less.

    • Mothra

Finally. I was getting worried. This is beautiful.

    • KT

Sooo cute!! And she finally found the right pair of shoes for an outfit! I do wish there was a little less matchiness though — the turquoise purse AND nails were a bridge too far. Still, she looks great — so summery and fresh.

    • Jacob Bowen

The colors alone SING together, but then you put them against her skin and I start to sing!!!

    • mdcoon127

hate it…too bathing suity – the shoes and bag are matchy in a way

    • Yolanda

I am thrilled beyond measure. This is the Lupita that we all know and love. And those shoes are fabulous!

    • KES4K

I desperately want all of this for myself, with the possible exception of the nail color.

    • numenah

      It’s all yummy and cheery!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      Matchy-matchy FTW!

    • Aidan B

      Thank GAWD.

    • rhaazz

Love her, love this look — but isn’t anyone else bothered by the fact that the dress looks like a sausage casing that’s trapped her legs all the way down to her calves?? How’s she gonna walk in that thing? Wouldn’t it have looked way cuter and more comfortable with an above-knee hemline?

      • smh4748

“How’s she gonna walk in that thing?”

        Very, very slowly. :)

    • MilaXX

      Luv huh!

    • melanie0866

      It’s perfect, except…it’s too long.

    • frannyprof

The universe is shifting back into proper balance…

    • caroline

Love this. Reminds me of the Contemporary Resort in Disney World, in a good way (which is something I never imagined myself saying).

    • ashtangajunkie

Those colours are her friends. She looks divine.

    • Gatto Nero

The clean lines of CK work so well on her. And for once, the shoes are a hit!

    • ChaCha_70

I can’t stop looking at these pics. Lupita is so stunning. She looks very relaxed and that dress is so perfect on her. LOVE.

    • DB Ruberto

To quote Jen from the IT Crowd “shoes… shoes… sho.. shoe.. shoes”
      I wants them so BAD!

    • Imma Mäder

      she’s BACK!!!

    • Betsy

THIS is the look for her! No frou-frou. No extra volume in the fabric (skirt, top, whatever). GREAT JOB, Lupita!!

    • Lilithcat

It would be even more fabulous if it weren’t for the length of that dress, which does no one, not even Lupita, any favors.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

I love that she went with aqua nail polish instead of the persimmon!

    • Kent Roby

Thank Goodness I can end my work week with order restored to the universe. Ahhhh.

    • Trickytrisha

Nice, but a tad long and tight and matchy. Love the shoes. A bra would have been appreciated. But all in all, it’s our Lupita.

    • GeoDiva

It’s the Aloha Spirit! Wish I could jaunt over to Maui to see her.

    • Alloy Jane

This is beautiful, but I wish it ended just below the knee. And I don’t hate the shoes! Amazing!

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

So gorgeous. I love the colours, the cut and the curvy blocking

      • Isabel

Even the nail polish. I usually hate that color on regular people.

    • http://logical-insnaity.com/ elizonthelam

I would like this entire outfit please.

    • Mr. J.

      Have mercy.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Love-and the world is restored to its rightful balance.

    • DuBey2

I love these photographs in front of nature. Really love them.

    • LadyVimes

Beautiful. I don’t know who was doing her previous two looks, but I’m glad they stopped, Lupita, darling.

    • understateddiva

      werrrrrrq, So refreshing!

    • anotherkate

I love it! She is rocking the hell out of that colorblocking. And those sandals are perfect for this. She looks so breezy and very Hawai’i.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      We’re not worthy!

    • somebody blonde

      FLOVE.

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

I love how the straps of the sandals mirror the curves of the dress.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

This reminds me of, God help us, a Stella McCartney dress that was fairly ubiquitous a few seasons ago. I remember disliking that one then. This one is not much better, save for better colors. Lupita does have the skin to make these colors glow, I’ll say. And the shoes are fab.

    • quiltrx

Terrific! And I agree, the matchy-match works with something this clean-lined and colorblocked. Well done pretty lady!

    • e jerry powell

The shoe is GIVING ME LIFE.

    • Pumps

      She’s baaaack!!! Love it!!!

    • EEKstl

Stunning. And I Must. Have. That. Dress. (although of course I wouldn’t expect to approach anything close to Lupita Justice). And I have to say: The matchy mani/pedi is werqing for me too.

    • Judih1

The colors are amazing on her! And the fit on both the dress and the shoes is dead on – so many lady stars have fit issues on their borrowed frocks and clothes

    • Mailbtch

The matchy is ok for me too (I mean honestly ALL the aqua is a little much), but does anyone else kind of hate this length???

    • heartbot

      STUNNING.

    • JynxTheCat

Lovely! Im sure it will be here soon enough but for a head start google: Lupita White Bikini and then swoon.

    • Akemi

OMG LOVE EVERY SINGLE THING. My favorite color palette, and it suits her perfectly.
