Taylor Swift in Oscar de la Renta in New York City

Posted on June 17, 2014

Miss Tay has turned into quite the little streetwalker lately. It’s almost like she’s doing the New York version of Reese Witherspoon’s Parking Lot Tour of 2013/14.

Just a simple day dress and practical shoes. She’s probably just left the gym.

SO much hate for those shoes.

    • PinkyK

    • kimmeister

Not to mention they make her eleventy feet tall.

      • Amelia Via

The shoes are hideous, but why would it matter if they make her taller? Women are all supposed to be small and fragile? Fuck that noise.

        • SugarSnap108

Or maybe Kimmeister is just making a comment about the hiddy shoes looking and functioning like stilts. Assuming she believes that Real Women must be tiny and frail is a pretty big leap.

          • Bridget Smith

As a tall woman who regularly has people ask why I bother wearing heels when I’m already tall, as if “because they’re pretty” isn’t a good enough reason and their intimidation is their own problem, not mine: any criticism addressed at a tall woman for not downplaying her height hits me the wrong way every time.

Of course, “because they’re pretty” is not any sort of defense for these particular shoes! But we can stop at “they’re hideous and ungainly” without going to “and they make her so tall.”

          • SugarSnap108

Oh, I understand. Being short and pale, I get lots of helpful hints from people on how I can alter my appearance to suit their preferences.

More importantly: The way you just explained why that comment bothers you makes a lot of sense. As opposed to, for example, accusing someone of believing women should be “fragile” and telling them to F that noise.

          • fursa_saida

Yeah…I just don’t see why “they make her tall” is a criticism unless the idea of women being tall itself is bad. I can’t find an interpretation that doesn’t mean that.

    • And so much hate for yet another dress ruined by an asymmetrical hem. I do like the print, and the neckline is very classic & flattering. Betty Draper could easily have worn this early in “Mad Men” (with white gloves, natch).

      • bitchybitchybitchy

What is it with the asymmetrical hem? It’s marring an otherwise lovely frock, and yes, it does have a Betty Draper feel.

        • Sarah

I thought that too, but the shoes bugged me more. Like, round-toe pump or flat, and I forgive yer hem.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I know that celebs default to the nude shoe, but this pair does bug.

        • P M

The assymetrical drape /peplum/ waterfall trend is giving me twitchy-eye.

          • smayper

Me too. Hate hate hate extra piece of fabric randomly tacked on.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

It makes me wonder if Oscar thought that he needed to add some element to a lovely frock that, without that element, would be dismissed as “just another lovely dress”

          • P M

Well, I guess he had to add *something* to make it ‘current’ and ‘fresh’ and so on. Which seems unnecessary to me. But then, I’m the person who thinks the people on ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ should just go with custom gowns many a-time, instead of trying on $14,000 monstrosities.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Say Yes to the Dress is one of my favorite guilty pleasures-bridal dress porn.

      • Violentcello

Does that count as an asymmetrical hem? I think the hem itself is even, but there’s a flounce or a floof or some other made up word for a design element that hangs past the hemline.

        • Targettaste

Hate the floof, love the word.

      • I think the asymmetrical hem saves it from being too literally “retro” and going costume. A slight modern touch that looks great in motion.

        • Raspberry2012

Yah, the asymmetrical hem is one of the things I like about it – keeps it from being just another flowery summer dress.

    • FancyPhilly

Agree, I’d like to see sweet mary jane flats with this dress (in black no less) though that might be too much twee even for her.

      • Sarah

Ha I dislike twee but I thought flats too. But rather pointy gold ones.

      • Ginmaru

You both win. Check out the shoes in the first pic of TLO’s Alberta Ferretti post! Serendipity, I think not!

      • fursa_saida

Mmmmm I think it needs heels (because of the asymmetry–that extra length says heels to me, whereas if it were just knee length all around I’d be all for flats), but certainly more classic, non-platform ones.

        • Raspberry2012

This. I wouldn’t do flats with an asymmetrical hem. It kinda needs heels. Just not THESE heels.

    • MoHub

The day the last pair of platform soles dies, I will break out a jeroboam of champagne.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I am right there with you; the platform sole is an abomination.

  • Kent Roby

Oh, look, Taylor Swift JUST got done FEEDING SLOP TO ORPHANED PIGS! I can not with her, just no.

  • clatie

I am puzzled by the fact that I have come to irrationally despise her. I used to like her just fine. Not a fan, but I respected her. Now I want to throw stuff at her. Am I alone?

    • Kent Roby

That’s just wrong. By that, I mean that you are completely rational to despise her.

      • clatie

    • clatie

PS There was a blind item reveal about her recently, which is of course of extremely dubious authenticity, that claims she calls up the paps, goes into the gym, doesn’t work out but spends the time getting dressed and made up, and emerges at the appointed time for her daily shot. Kind of believe it.

      • Kent Roby

Please see the “Taylor Leaves The Gym” posts here; there’s no other explanation.

      • Sarah

Kind of? I am pretty sure she proves it on the regular. *Grumble grumble romper pumps mutter mutter lipstick*

        • evave2

I don’t know about others, but when I go to the gym, I work out, shower, wash my hair. I LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT than I did going in.
It is so dumb if she does that, and even if she is NOT doing that, it looks like she is so it’s dumb. Her publicist is not giving her cool things to do to get her picture taken.

      • MilaXX

That’s 75% of Hollywood. You think people really sit in the parking lot of Whole Foods waiting for Reese to come pick up groceries?

        • DominoEstella

Actually, I think they do.. wouldn’t surprise me

        • PastryGoddess

They follow her from her house and who knows maybe her publicist calls them as well.

      • marlie

SHE may not do it, but it’s a key part of a publicist’s arsenal.

      • Cheryl

Hey, I learned about that here! I think she trying to take Reese’s crown for the “oh, are there photographers here? I’m so surprised…” faux staged pictures.

        • LadyVimes

Her bitchface isn’t quite up to snuff yet. She still looks too pleased with herself.

          • marlie

UGH. That smirk. It bugs so much.

          • Carleenml

I have yet to see a post of her where she is NOT doing that. It grates like a lemon peel.

      • MoHub

        Makes perfect sense to me.

      • AlarTruve

Would believe it if there were not a bunch of creepy pap photos of her actually working out.

    • demidaemon

Not at all. When I listen to her music, I’m fine. Seeing her on television or in photos: causes stabbiness and choking gestures.

      • Imma Mäder

that’s exactly my funny relationship with her – I like her music, but she just bugs me to no end

    • Latin Buddy

No, I’m right there with you. She’s the perky cheerleader in high school that you just want to see fall in lunch and have her food spilled all over her.

      • sugarkane105

I feel the same, and it’s odd because her first big song, “You Belong with Me” I believe it was called, criticized and made fun of the popular ‘cheerleader’ type. Which always pissed me off because I was cheerleader in high school, but I certainly never tore down other girls to make myself feel better. That’s my big thing about her – almost all of her success is due to bringing down others while claiming to be a VICTIM. /rant

    • KateShouldBeWorking

My understanding is that she’s a self-made woman and I give her big props for that.

However, she strikes me as affected and the root of “affected” is “untrustworthy”. That’s why she’s on my Totally Rational Hate List.

      • This perfectly sums up my feelings about celebrities. My intuition senses that much of her personality is affected and so I’m inherently disinterested in her. Similarly, someone like…Jennifer Lawrence or to a lesser extent Anna Paquin, exudes charm without the affectation. It may be different in person, but that’s what comes through the screen.

      • Aurumgirl

Self made? Million dollar recording industry daddy might make that an ironic label for her. But, her talent is her own, I guess, and she’s found/had her audience located via expensive public opinion research and all…so she deserves some props. Not every one can make a living doing concert tours.

        • TigerLaverada

Yeah, she’s about as far from self-made as one can get. Her father enough of her first album to go platinum and get her career going. There are many thousands of singers at least as talented but who don’t have somebody to buy them a career start. She grates.

    • FibonacciSequins

She’s never struck me as particularly authentic so I’ve always been lukewarm about her.

    • Anna

She seems affected and gawky at the same time – awful combination. Not to mention I totally get Big Bird vibes when I look at her which really pisses me off since BB is good shit.

    • Caius Keys

Listen to Taylor’s songs with extra goats — that’s when I got to like her.

      • Kitten Mittons

I forgot about the goats. Thanks for that little chuckle.

      • random_poster

After hearing the goal version, I always hear them whenever that song plays. I don’t even have to listen to the entire song, and I hear the goats. The goats are hilarious.

    • kim bunchalastnames

… and i’m just the opposite. i used to loathe her, and now i kind of feel sorry for her. lol. plus, love the dress, even WITH that hem.

    • prisma

I can’t figure it out myself. Kim Kardashian is a total waste of space but I can dismiss her. Taylor enrages me.

    • Raspberry2012

Not just you. I could have cared less about her music, but when she hosted SNL, I was surprised that she was really funny. She did her opening monologue with a song about how whichever one of the Jonas brothers broke up with her, but this was back at a time when that wasn’t her default way of songwriting, so I originally thought it was funny. Also, they did a hilarious spoof of the “Twilight” trailer that had me in tears. And then over time, she just became totally annoying. I mean, every time I see a post like this, or another item about how she takes aim at another ex in her newest song, I do remember that I originally thought she was cool. I keep thinking, “Now I have to find that ‘Twilight’ spoof online to make me like her again.”

  • LadyVimes

    Her brother is sooooo unimpressed.

    • demidaemon

He’s like, “I can’t believe this shit. Really, sis?”

      • Lori

She still annoys, but I’ve now developed kind of a fondness for the brother. I want to buy him a beer and get the dish, because he is clearly not impressed with the golden child’s ish.

        • FrigidDiva

Can you even imagine what it’s like to be her sibling? Pretty much no matter what you do it’s not going to measure up to what Taylor’s done. Oof.

          • Grumpy Girl

or. conversely, all the pressure is off. He won’t be the big star, so he can be what he wants (within reason). I think he’s got the cat bird seat.

          • Lori

Yup. That’s got to be a hard row to hoe. I meant it when I said I’d like to buy him a beer. I strongly suspect he both needs and deserves one. Or a few.

    • OMG, the true star of these photos.

  • demidaemon

    She looks pretty. Still bugs.

  • Hate the shoes, hate the lipstick. Not crazy about the pleated drapery hanging off the belt, but it’s a pretty summer dress, otherwise.

  • lunchcoma

I’ll give her points for this one: that’s a pretty dress, and it looks better on her than it does on the model.

Now that I’ve been nice, maybe she’ll lend me Not Her Brother who she’s eyeing in the third picture.

  • Wendi126

Whimpering into my cocktail and by cocktail I mean wine from a box…why does her father seem to be my age….sob sob…I can’t diss Tay with her daddy there

  • veronicafish

    Sarcasm! 😉

  • FibonacciSequins

That’s exactly what she’s doing – NYC Sidewalk Tour of 2014. At least wear some semi-practical shoes if you want to pull it off, Taylor.

  • mickiemonkey

Michelle Obama would knock this dress out of the park.

    • Heather

Yes exactly! And at the proper occasion, not “I’m walking down the street, tee hee.”

  • shirab

Those shoes not only look uncomfortable but also make her feet look like they end in a point that is topped off by one very big, very lonely toe.

    • Gatto Nero

      Hideous shoes.

  • MilaXX

Really cute dress! She must be trying to dress a little more grown up because yet again this is a look that would have totally worked with a cute pair of flats. This time however, I do like the pumps with the dress as well.

    • marlie

I’ll believe that she’s trying to grow up when she goes for more than a week without dressing like a toddler. This is Day 1.

    • Constant Reader

It’s an example of what TLo tells celebs they should do: take their personal style (in Taylor’s case, twee) and bring it up a few notches. This dress does that. It’s a good direction for her. I hope she does more of it and we never see a diaper-butt romper on her again.

  • @Biting Panda

    Honey…. Do you work?

    • LJCdoc

    • jenny waltz

um yes she just finished a super successful sould out tour in asia

    • Natalie

Yeah she does. She just completed a sold out tour in Asia selling out arenas and playing to some of the largest crowds ever in the world, including China, just last week.

  • GorgeousThings

Okay, I don’t care about her one way or t’other, but can I just say how cute her dad is with her? She may be trying to be all “cool and Tay and such”, but he seems to be genuinely delighted to be with her, so I’m good with all that.:)

  • Meri

Cute dress- looks like something Charlotte Charles would wear. Aaaaand now I’m missing Pushing Daisies again.

    • Lower L

It is a cruel injustice that Pushing Daisies is no longer on TV, but anything with the word “Housewives” in the title is.

    • Jacob Bowen

Ohhhhhhh I miss my Darling Mermaid Darlings!!!

  • Linzenberg

Normally, Tay-Tay is on my (ir)rational hate list, but it has been stupid amounts of gorgeous this week. I kind of don’t blame her for wanting to walk the sidewalks like she’s in a montage. If I didn’t have to earn a living, I’d be going nowhere and looking fabulous doing it, too.

  • marlie

For real, though, I need that dress. NEED. Tay take it off and pass it over and no one will get hurt.

    And then burn the shoes.

  • kimmeister

Very pretty dress. Reminds me of a much cheaper dress I had once, that I had to get rid of after a while, because it never fit me right and I came to realize I can’t wear yellow worth a crap.

  • DagnyReardon

love this dress. hate the shoes and the bag is worse

  • Cheryl

I really like that dress. Her poor brother does not look happy about being part of the 2014 New York sidewalk tour. The last photo is makes him look like the actor in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, with the same expression the actor wore in a lot of that movie.

  • lynnlee

Dum shoes, but that dress sure is pretty.

  • Filmjen

The silver shoes are such a no brainer. Come on Tay!

  • DuBey2

Love the dress. Hate the grey hair & meh the shoes. As to Taylor, well, she’s a celebrity, doing what celebrities do. I don’t hate her or love her. Just please don’t ever make me listen to her music. Its just not my thing, but I respect everyone else’s right to love or hate it.

  • GOD…Raf Simons for Oscar de la Renta? Talk about an “influence” … hemline…the detail from DIOR that several top designers in USA and europe has had no quams in “interpreting”? ZZZzzz….

    • BlairBear

If by interpreting you mean making beautiful instead of awkward then maybe. Also pretty sure that was a Raf original innovation

      • That dress (minus the hem thingamagig) has been in Oscar’s reptoire for decades, and it still works. I’m just amused at how such an established designer as Oscar will so blatantly knock off the “detail du jour” …. Chances are Oscar’s design staff slipped this one through.

  • BoxOfficeChica

Cute dress, the heels are too high and platformy. I first saw these pics elsewhere captioned as Taylor being out with her dad for Father’s Day. Hardly snarkworthy, for a girl to put on a nice dress for that.

  • BlairBear

I’m more interested in the guy with his eyes shut behind her. Hello handsome

    • kburnell

      That’s her brother.

      • BlairBear

        Well I’ve found his flaw

  • What is this fuckery? I can’t with her. Nobody can just walk around in NYC in shoes like that. Who the hell is she fooling? Even her bro is like, “Screw this.” Pretty dress though. It’s nice of her to pull it on and parade it around for us. I agree with a previous commenter below that Michelle Obama would rock the shit out of it. Hate those shoes. Damn, I’m sick of the platform pump. They look like horse hooves.

  • nannypoo

When the weather is humid my bangs do exactly what her bangs are doing. I hate it. Cute dress though.

  • alyce1213

She’s with her Dad and brother on Father’s Day. I have no complaints (okay, maybe the passé platforms). Pretty dress.

  • rhône

i love the dress so much but when i got to the shoes i actually gasped in horror. such a bad choice. hair and makeup are just okay.

  • Diane Iafrate

Not a fan of hers, the dress is cute, maybe Herman Munster wants those shoes.

  • tallgirl1204

Brother is cute. I know we’re not supposed to judge bystanders or anyone’s looks, but just had to say it.

  • I like a pretty twirly dress!

  • smh4748

I like this. It’s cute and summery and pretty. It’s perhaps a bit too twee, but it is Taylor Swift, so what are you gonna do?

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    “She’s so refined… I think I’ll kill myself.”

  • Mothra

I don’t think that is an asymetrical hem, I think it is a dishtowel. Also, hate the shoes. And the purse. and the lip color.

  • Trickytrisha

Peep toe shoes can be a great source of amusement. So can flappy things hanging from your belt. Don’t care for her hairdo either, but other than those nitpicks, she looks cute. Gangly, but cute.

  • littlevase

Does anyone else not entirely loathe the shoes and think she looks pretty ? So afraid.

    • littlevase

And alone. So afraid and alone.

  • OffToSeeHim

Loathe the shoes, and who the hell are all those PEOPLE??? Doesn’t anybody just go anywhere alone anymore?

    • SugarSnap108

The caption says she’s with her dad and brother.

  • quiltrx

That yellow (of a shade I call “yaller”) is doing her NO favors. And can side-mud-flaps, boob peplums, and other such foofaraw go away?
And those shoes make me heave.

  • Lizzy

I’m really not loving her current hair color….. it’s just to mousey and dull.

  • Lizzy

And…it reminds me a lot of the dress that Baby’s mom wears at the end of dirty dancing… just in floral .

  • SugarSnap108

    Pretty dress. Inexplicable shoes.

  • Bozhi

Love the dress, legs, face, hair, hate the shoes.

  • Natalie

She looks amazing. Love the dress.

  • jenny waltz

    what a lovely summer look

people are just unnecessarily bitter about taylor

  • kategs

She’s got the shoulders to carry that wide a neckline. I think she looks darling but the shoes? There are better ones out there.

  • Alexis Wenceslao

Cute dress and an even CUTER brother.

  • MannahattaMamma

I am not sure I can imagine a more hellish role in life than “Taylor Swift’s brother.” Yikes.

    • AlarTruve

Millions of her fans throwing themselves at him because of the connection. OMG. That life must be hell!!!!!

      • Is this sarcasm? Because yeah, that actually does sound pretty hellish.

        • Shawn EH

          Hopefully he gets nice presents!

  • livesarah

Eww those shoes. Why? She definitely owns better, I’m sure of it. And I covet the dress with the fire of a thousand suns, but I would have someone remove the unnecessary frou-fraw from the hip. I might not wear it from the gym but I would pretend like it’s low-key enough to wear to the supermarket…. I would find excuses to wear it everywhere.

  • MissusBee

Flats would be cuter for daytime. Even if she was going more formal, something more dainty with a heel was the right way to go. Those shoes belong to Victoria Beckham, to be worn with something constricting.

  • decormaven

Love that dress, and while those Prada heels wouldn’t be my first choice, she’s making them work. Reece better watch the rear view mirror; Tay Tay is coming up fast with her NYC Summer Stroll ’14.

    • Shawn EH

      Hopefully Taylor can’t drive.

  • MoHub

I’ve figured it out. The dress was a PR “You must use all the fabric you buy” challenge. Thus the otherwise inexplicable extra swath of fabric hanging from the waist.

    • RAF SIMON’S detail knock off…hated it at DIOR…not loving it here either!

      • MoHub

I love you, Bert! Please come back to the DC area and be my boyfriend.

        • I just followed you. Does that count? 🙂

          • MoHub

I guess it’ll have to do! And the following is mutual.

  • Anna

Ah, the Taylor Swift Streetwalking Tour 2014. After GOOP, I think this may be my new thing I love to hate.

And I love the dress. Superfluous matching folded napkin/pleat thingy and all.

  • mjude

cute dress. surprised she is wearing those shoes.

  • AlarTruve

Even 0,5 % effort probably could have been enough to find out that she was taking her father out for Father´s Day. Which is really amazing, IMO. Especially considering how heartbreaking it must be for her to see her parents separated.

But whatever. Always cooler to get some bitching in, right? That lets hate on Taylor then we are cool angle is geting really pathetic…

    • Calm down, fangurl.

    • ecallaw1977

Huh. I didn’t even see any criticism, much less hate.

  • Wink

Really like the dress – even with the extra flap. If the belt were a solid green it would help to break up the abundance of floral print.

  • Jecca2244

i actually really like that dress.

  • MissFern

    This outfit makes no sense.

  • Shawn EH

Shoes: unforgivable. Dress: so perfect for her it hurts. I hate it when she’s adorable.

  • She’s the girl to wear Oscar, but the shoes wreck the look. I like these saturated brights on her, since her coloring is so uniformly beige.

  • Raspberry2012

Ugh. I mean it’s pretty, so I don’t mean to come across like a bitch. But she’s so twee as it is, and the dress is just SUPER twee, so it’s a lot like overkill.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m not down with that shade of screaming yellow. And I hate the shoes. Does she not have a boyfriend right now? Is that what the NY Sidewalk Tour is all about?

  • Sam Smith

She looks lovely, except for the shoes. I totally heart that dress. I do wish she would move away from that red lipstick that she is addicted to, to me its way to bold and jarring, especially for this kind of look.

  • lecoffeeaddict

Any sentence that begins with “Taylor Swift sashays down the street” is likely to make me queasy.

Ugh. Can’t tell if the hate is rational or not anymore.

  • I need that dress. If I promise to burn the shoes, can I have it?

  • I love everything about the dress, except for that thing flapping around on the side there. Bad. Just bad.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Worse yet, somewhere there is a sofa out there with the SAME fabric (shudder) (thankfully the matching curtains are in the sun room)

  • stubbornthoughts

Man, do I desperately want to take some scissors to that goddamn hem. I would’ve loved some cute flats/flat sandals with this dress. It’s all a little much for every day wear.

  • amanda lynn

    Of course.

  • amaranth16

    I WANT this dress.

  • JynxTheCat

When this one cracks…it is going to be epic! That is a cute ass dress though. Would be adorable if employed ironically on like Beth Ditto for instance.
