Lucy Liu in Vivienne Westwood at the 2014 Tony Awards

Posted on June 09, 2014

The Tonys, bless them, are something of an entertainment industry Nerd Prom. And like any Nerd Prom, the fashion and the picture-posing tend to be slightly on the raggedy side of things, mainly because the vast majority of the people who walk that red carpet aren’t celebrities in the “household name” sense and because major fashion houses tend not to lend out their wares to anyone but the A and B-listers. Brutal, but there it is.

What we don’t understand is this:

You’re a highly fashionable A-lister, Lucy. You should have aced this night, since there was so little in the way of competition. And while this looks very good from further away, when we get up close we’re distracted by a bust that’s clearly too small for you and a pair of strappy shoes that are, to be honest, a little on the ugly side. And is it us or does her hair look kind of hastily pinned up?

It’s a gorgeous gown – and we LOVE the clutch – but the detailing and fit are a little off. She still looks good, but she’s not up to her usual standards.

Definitely not her usual standards – that bodice looks painful and a white band at the top of a black phoofy dress never fails to make me think of Brenda and Kelly’s matching prom dresses.

I like her hair, I love the clutch, and I think she should go back to Carolina Herrera where she belongs.

    • NBG

90210 reference on a Monday morning? Wow, I am in awe! I have not even put my contacts in yet!

      • Alicia

Well, in my timezone it’s after lunch, so I have had longer to warm up!

    • chica63

LMAO! Can not unsee this now.

    • FuhUgh

Yeah, slutty prom dress or slutty bridesmaid dress – take your pick. The dress is not good (IMHO), but those shoes are unforgivable for the red carpet. They are too sporty or too wear-to-work. Seems like the ‘no pedicure’ pedicure might be a thing this summer.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Lucy was made to wear Carolina’s dresses. I like this dress, but the size clearly seems wrong in the bust.

  • RussellH88

In the words of Corky St. Claire ‘See? You’re squeezin’ your boobies”

The bust looks awkward and uncomfortable.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Part of it is that the cut is deliberately referencing an 18th century style of bodice, which was entirely conical, no bust darts. But I agree that it doesn’t suit her, really.

  • shirab

A mullet hem, Lucy? I did not see that coming.

  • deelup

I’m having sympathy boob pain right now.

    • Introspective

  • Introspective

my boobs are having sympathy pains. ive had to say that too many times on these boards. when will stylists get it that smashed boobs arent a thing?

the hair is off, and the dress is ok, but not great even if we put aside the boob destruction.

totally agree with Alicia that Lucy’s at home (and a knockout) in Herrera!!!

  • hyperionic

I don’t even see the appeal from far away. Looks like a garbage bag dress.

  • Anna

Well, at least the face is flawless. I’m just going to close my eyes, have another espresso and pretend this never happened.

    • zuzu

She *does* have an amazing face, doesn’t she? With the perfect sprinkling of freckles.

      • Anna

Exquisite. And her skin! Mine never glowed like that in my teens and twenties when it was *supposed* to. She is the definition of luminous.

    • Trent

Not to be shallow, but this woman is 45 YEARS OLD and doesn’t have a single line on her face! And she doesn’t look Botoxed, just dewy and glowing. Not that I’m jealous or bitter or anything…

      • Anna

Right?! I moisturize, exfoliate, been wearing eye cream since I turned 20, wear SPF 50 and I STILL started noticing forehead lines a couple of years ago. Oh, and I also still breakout like a teenager once a month. Grrrr….

  • @Biting Panda

Everyone’s entitled to an off day. Let’s chalk this up to something trite, like PMS, and agree to never bring it up again.

  • DeTrop

She was one of the best dressed. But those shoes – NO.

    • Wink

I didn’t see the show, but if she was one of the ‘best dressed’ I’m glad I missed it. This dress is a mash-up of ‘prom and bridesmaid.’

      • MilaXX

Lucy’s dress aside. The show was pretty good. There were a few low points, but there were also so really fantastic performances and wins.

  • elleg929

    Full on Monet.

  • SugarSnap108

Nope. I think the dress would be awkward and prom-y even if it fit. She phoned this one in, because Tonys.

Also, “nerd prom” is so apt, and makes me love theater actors a little bit more.

  • NurseEllen

She was among the best dressed on camera, I’ll vouch for that. I rather liked the tuxedo-inspired look (although I could have done without the mullet hem, thank you) and the diamonds around her neck were killer. Of course on TV you can’t see the purse but now I can see it’s a great choice. I said to my husband last night that I thought her “bump it” hair was piled too high to be attractive, although I do like that she put it up so we could appreciate the neckline and the diamonds. I’d still give her 8/10. Can’t wait til you get to the Rooney Mara discussion!

    • MilaXX

      Rooney made me cringe.

      • NurseEllen

My sisters and I were Facebook chatting during the broadcast and I said Mara was channeling matador chic. And failing.

        • Alicia

Matador chic? She wasn’t wearing that horrible H&M collection, was she?

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She looked like she was wearing a tiny suit of armor.

  • ktr33

Because she’s so gorgeous, I don’t have the guts to say this is a hot mess, but I wish I did. The dress — bodice and skirt — seem wrinkly and bunchy and kind of cheap. And the white “collar” looks a little dingy. The clutch is fun, tho I think of Judith Lieber for Grande Dames. The puffy 1/2-up hair is prommy. Ironically, my favorite thing IS the shoes, but like with jeans or something much more casual.

    • kimmeister

We don’t expect clean, simple lines from Westwood, but this frock is even more wrinkled than a typical Westwood. Shame.

      • ktr33

Indeed. It’s not funky Westwood rumpled, it’s just rumpled.

    • conlakappa

I like the shoes too! But maybe because it distracts from the bad scene happening above with boob crushing. I don’t think of Lucy as chesty–so why is that area being tortured?

  • k_dev

It almost looks like she had another outfit picked out and spilled something on it and had to switch at the last hour. (Quick change the hair, I’ll keep the shoes, get as many wrinkles out of the back-up dress as you can…) Do A-listers do such things or is that behavior for only mere mortals?

    • Grumpy Girl

That was my morning. Or should have been. I washed the spill out, but now that it’s dry, I see I have a soap stain. Good thing the stain stays under my desk most of the day.

  • msdamselfly

    Still looks pretty good

  • MilaXX

Gosh this looked prettier on tv last night. Seeing this stills – not so much.

  • Clydette Wantland

    Her boobs look really unhappy.

  • Jaeda Laurez

This feels wrong- like…the front of her dress split open instead of being a deliberate choice. I don’t like it.

  • Valerie Dunbar Jones

Didn’t Holly Hunter wear this in “Broadcast News?”

  • ashtangajunkie

Perfect face, as usual, but this is a rare miss for Ms. Liu.

    • Snailstsichr

Yes, last night I turned to my husband and said the same thing.

  • abishagijh

It looked especially wrong during the closing act pogoing.

  • Mink Carlyle

I actually like everything apart from the too-tight fit on the bust. Okay, I’ll get my coat…

  • YoungSally

It looked much better on the Radio City stage….not sure it was meant to have the camera in the cleavage angle.

  • conniemd

Ohhh to be Lucy Liu and still look good in a dress with an awkward fitting bust. Love the necklace.

  • BlairBear

I can’t find fault with her because I irrationally love her. I wish she had worn this dress to the met ball with different shoes.

  • Gatto Nero

Westwood’s dresses often have some wonkiness in the bust/bodice area. (Why?) A few adjustments here would have helped.
But overall she’s gorgeous — as usual.

  • V No Privacy

I’m going to believe that she didn’t want to be too “hey I’m a fabulous A-lister” show-offy at this event and intentionally made the styling a little off as a result. Denial is a powerful tool.

  • alliekat9090

I can forgive everything but the hair.

  • Danielle

The babyheads look so painful. Wince.

  • Shawn EH

It photographed well on stage so at least she looked nice during the show.

  • Lilithcat

I feel sorry for her boobs.

  • msamanda_jones

total prom. My first thought was Jessica McClintock.

    • conlakappa

      Gunney Sack FTW!

  • CT14

I was so disappointed when I saw her.

That dress did not work at all. Ugly cat ear bra that doesn’t fit. Bleh. You deserve better, Lucy Liu!

  • marlie

The bust is too tight, and the skirt is a little too voluminous. Lucy’s clearly not “phoning it in,” but I’m not in love. Granted, this is still a world better than a lot of ladystars on their best day. Lucy’s hair is ok, and I love the clutch. Her makeup could have had more oompf, though.

  • Terri Terri

The bustline and the hair are so damn silly, it’s just awful all the way around.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

If I stare at that beautiful necklace, I don’t really see the squashed boobs.

  • melanie0866

Uncles: You don’t get that kind of height by “hastily pinning up” your hair. That’s a professional ‘do. And I like it.

Really, the only flaw I find is that the bust is squashing her.

  • OffToSeeHim

And that hair is a great big WTF. That look works on NOBODY.

  • Cheryl

I like it, but it does look a little painful, just a few milimetres larger at the bust, and I’d love it.

  • LadyVimes

Lucy, that bodice is hurting my feelings. You’re too lovely for this dress.

  • FibonacciSequins

That dress would have been so perfect if the bodice fit. I want to touch that silk taffeta, it looks luxurious. She missed an opportunity with those shoes.

Love her hair and makeup (and the bag).

  • KT

She’s definitely not A list. I’d say C+, B- at best. But she deserves better than this.

  • demidaemon

I just think Lucy isn’t a Vivienne Westwood kind of gal. This is a case of GTNYD.

  • Sophie

I don’t like anything but the clutch, really. It is an amazing clutch.

  • understateddiva

That dress has SHOE CURTAINS and you chose those shoes to display proudly?

  • livesarah

I don’t mind the shoes, at least with that dress. The dress looks great from some angles and awful from others. I think Vivienne actually hates boobs.

Normally I hate coiffs like that but Lucy’s head looks pretty fab.

  • largishbearishAtlish

The missing Fembot from one of the Austin Powers Movies!

  • NinjaCate

This is a first. I hate everything about this. Except the clutch. But spot on about the bodice and her looks a mess. WHY LUCY LUI WHY?!?

  • rhaazz

NOOOOOO! It’s not bad in the details, the fit, or the styling. IT’S JUST BAD BAD BAD. It looks like my Victor Costa prom dress from 1983, except for this: my Victor Costa 1983 prom dress would, today, look way more chic, fashion forward, and flattering.
