Demi Lovato in Fausto Puglisi at the Cosmopolitan Fun, Fearless Latinas Awards

Posted on June 05, 2014

We really want to like this, but we think it might be too … something… for her to pull off.

It’s sassy as hell, certainly. And this is better than a lot of her style choices normally are. But it if you put roller skates and a little hat on her she could be a waitress in a theme restaurant.  A particularly booby theme restaurant, but still. We’re just not loving the trend lately of these flared little Judy Jetson circle skirts. We can’t say it looks unflattering on her, but it just looks so costumey to us. And pairing that plunging neckline with such a high-waisted flared skirt throws the proportions off – at least on her. It’s a cute look, but it needs some alterations, we’re thinking.

Great shoes, though.

  • RussellH88

I like it. But it has a slightly Judy Jetson-ish Graphic Futuristic look to it, which I tend to love.

    • You bet me to it. Exactly the deference that popped up. Its really rather cartoony. It would be spot on for Comic Con.

    • FuhUgh

Ditto Judy Jetson and also Comic Con.

  • Sobaika

I like it. I see the concerns but Demi can pull off a little cartoony.

  • leahpapa

The word you’re looking for is “short.” And loathe as I am to suggest a literal recreation of the runway look, I think that belt would have made it less costumey. Still an attagirl, though.

  • Danielle

She’s got a very strong face, so she’s pulling this off.

    • Rhonda Shore

      She has gorgeous skin.

    • Alyssa

Yes, the hair & face are what’s selling it for me. If she had chosen typical mermaid or loose wavy hair, I don’t think I’d like it as much.

  • It’s the yellow that bugs me. If it were all black, or the yellow was a cobalt blue maybe?

    • demidaemon

I actually like the yellow here. It reminds me of bumblebees, which I find irrationally cute.

  • sienna elm

Looks like she’s been shopping in Katy Perry’s closet ~

  • Karen Belgrad

Is it just me or is Demi Lovato actually starting to resemble a young Demi Moore? (facially)

    • alyce1213

      Weird, but true.

  • cat772

Shoes are lust-worthy. I think she looks cute, but the lampshade skirt trend must end. Soon, please.

    • Beardslee

It is not a trend that belongs on grown women. The revealing neckline and the girly skirt is not a coupling I can get behind.

      • MoHub

        Or in front of.

        • demidaemon

          Not without a wardrobe malfunction.

  • SewingSiren

She needs a tray of different brands of cigarettes to complete the look. And a change belt.

  • I’d love it as a pencil skirt, she’s got great curves to show off.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I was thinking the same thing. A pencil skirt would have looked great.

      • demidaemon

Really, anything that was less stiff and had more give would be better than this.

  • Frank_821

The problem also is that she’s short waisted and that heightens the costumey effect

  • @Biting Panda

It’s a wee on the too short side. The shoes are fierce, but they are cutting her legs, visually.

    • random_poster

A different cut on the skirt for length and to make it lay better would help this tremendously. The shoes look painful.

    • jay

exactly, it’s hitting her in a really awkward place on her leg

  • ScarlettHarlot

    Short. It’s too short.

  • Super_Red

Overall I really like this, but I wish it was half a size bigger on her. Girl has a chest bigger than the model so it’s going to pull differently, but I wonder if a skosh bigger would have given it a little bit of an easier, breezier look that would have made it look less judy jetson. Though, full disclosure, I adore (longer) judy jetson skirts.

  • NBG

The sleeves are not flattering at all. Not even on the model. And now that you mentioned roller skates, all I see is a derby girls outfit. While I love derby girls and think they are badass, i would not dress like them for the RC.

  • majorbedhead

She looks like a back up singer at a Slayer concert.

    • Cheryl

      Heh, perfect!

  • Bad Idea Jeans

I think “too pointy” is what you were looking for.

    • 3boysful

I was going to say “too ugly.”

  • elemspbee

agreed. super cute but alterations needed. I would say lessen the flare. liking the futuristic, bumblebee color combo

  • I think she’s very nearly pulling it off! On a side note, I really love how comfortable she seems in her body lately. I know this isn’t really the place to talk about celebrity bodies, but she’s had such struggles with eating disorders, and it’s really great to see her looking clearly confident in her own skin.

  • In_Stitches

I think she’s working it. Sure, it would be better 2 inches longer with a little of the volume taken out, but it’s fine as is. She definitely should have ditched a lot of the jewelry. You can stack rings and necklaces when they’re fairly nondescript, but these are all focus pulling. It looks a bit messy.

I am not a fan of the hair at all. I think she could work a buzzed head…

  • ashtangajunkie

I think it’s an almost, but could have been an ‘attagirl’ for me if it were a fitted skirt instead.

  • TinyDynamo

She’s like the punk rock member of Josie and the Pussycats, so overall I really like this. And I absolutely love the hair & makeup.

    • mjude

the theme song just ran through my head. 🙂

  • Kathleen

Drop the waist & the hem a couple inches each and I’d like it a lot more. And I’m not a fan of the shoes or the bag. It’s not horrible, just… Off a bit.

  • rebeemoon

Too bumblebee figure skater for me.

  • Melmmmendes

I think it looks way better on her than the model.

  • Anna

Demi is a trend queen, but she needs to learn that just because something is trendy doesn’t mean it’s going to look good. This dress makes her look beefy, and the hair style is not flattering. I’ve seen Demi look like a knock-out plenty of times, but this look is doing her no favors.

  • CNM

I really like this look on her, except for the jewelry.

  • Joanna

For me, the thing that kills it is all of the jewelry. Particularly the unnecessary number of rings. I love the necklaces, but with the rings, it’s all too much. if she had left her hands alone, the rest of the look would have been more streamline.

    • Shelby

      I totally agree.

  • MarissaLG

She’s got a Lena Dunham effect going on here. Something about the flare & length of the skirt is just not flattering on these two ladies. But it’s pretty cute overall.

  • MoHub

    Carhop uniform.

  • TerryMarie

The proportions of the entire outfit, including those shoes, make her look chunky and short, and I’m fairly certain neither one of those is actually the case. Her makeup looks lovely, though.

    • hyperionic

Na, she is naturally chunky and short.

    • hyperionic

No, she is actually chunky and short. Not much she can do about it.

      • ktr33

except dress to enhance and flatter her figure instead of, you know, not.

  • clatie

    Judy Jetson’s BFF, Cathy Gothsprocket.

    • ktr33

That’s it – Goth and Jetsons shouldn’t lie down together. It’s not natural.

      • clatie

  • andi56

I’m recovering from an acid flashback. This adorable little number in the same colors was worn by our local car-hops at the Hot Shoppes back in the 50s and 60s. It was cute then, and it’s cute now! But maybe not right for her body shape, although I do like the ankh and cross necklaces.

  • SayWhaaatNow

She is on my irrational yawn list. The cartoony dress doesn’t help.

  • Cheryl

It’s cute albeit, a tiny bit too short and low cut. It is a bit costumey, but I still like it.

  • Dan_In_NYC

100% ALMOST. Slightly less boobular, slightly longer skirt, lose the longer cross necklace, and we could have a major winner here – since the DNA of this dress is very striking. Her head looks fabulous.

  • Nancer

I’m thinking that this is a “Girl, that’s not your dress” situation. This is a difficult silhouette to pull off; it might only work for models.

  • Imasewsure

I saw Judy too… fun to be on the same page with our dear uncles.. too bad Demi is too young to have saved herself this odd dress (and this awesome reference)

  • BayTampaBay

Does she look like a brunette Kim Zolciak of The Atlanta Housewives fame or do I need to put the crack pipe down?

  • JP

Yeah, count me out for the lampshade skirt too.

  • ktr33

Also went straight to Jetsons! But a Jetsons dress and goth-lite styling — not quite right. Some simpler bolder jewelry might’ve worked.

  • alyce1213

Send it to Lena Dunham. She’ll love it.

  • If the bottom were a pencil shape ending just above the knee, this would be a stunner.

  • MilaXX

The skirt is the problem. It’s too triangle shaped. Either straight or a softer A line and this would be good.

  • Really…waitress uniform from the diner theme restaurant at Universal Studios in Orlando. Usually spotted at the Wawa, getting gas.

  • kimmeister

Skirt too flared, too many rings on, and the shoes are all wrong for her to pair with a dress.

  • NMMagpie

This is a tricky look for someone who is short in the waist to pull off. What I would like is for her to go lighter on the accessories. It would clean this up a lot.

    • decormaven

Yes, and as much as I like the shoes, the straps cut the vertical line of the leg. There’s a bit too many lines going on here with the semaphore pattern of the contrasting dress colors.

      • BLauD

That’s what I was thinking. The longer I looked at it, I realized there were just too many competing lines of attention. Hair, necklaces, color blocking, shoes.

  • marlie

It also seems like the dress was altered for Demi to sit a little bit higher on her torso. That was a bad decision, in my book. Still, “Edgy-lite” isn’t such a bad look for her.

  • Jacob Bowen

Clearly, the power of Christ compels her….2 cross necklaces?

  • melanie0866

It makes her look too boxy. It shortens her. She needs a consistent color line from from neck to knee, to lengthen her. This is too Roller Derby Queen for her frame.

  • French_Swede

The camera angle is strange, it does nothing for her legs. A full-on photo might show better.

  • siriuslover

I think she looks really cute. I love her hair. But, that said, I think the waist should be dropped as well as the hem.

  • Sabin

She looks like the missing Osborne sib. Which is not a compliment.

  • J. Preposterice

in my head, this is how cute i am.

in reality, this is how cute demi lovato is. oh well! next time around, me.

  • smh4748

I think I like this. I could live without the side boob, though it’s not too distracting from some of the more straight-on angles. The lines and colors are great, IMO, if maybe a smidge too short in the skirt.

I hate all of the jewelry though. Those necklaces are not much better than Lea Michelle’s “airport strip club” necklace she’s been sporting lately–they just strike me as kind of desperate and tacky.

  • poorellensmith

I think the biggest problem here is the jewelry, which takes it from stylish and fun (the runway version, with the belt) to kinda silly. If she had paired down the goth elements, I think this could have been a win for her, even with/especially because of the Judy Jetson bit!

  • Tee

Like the dress and the shoes, just not together. You need to keep the leg line as long as possible with a flair skirt. Shoes with ankle straps shorten the leg line.

  • Love her hair, though!

  • dalgirl

Other than the plunge, this is a lot like my middle school cheerleading outfit. We were the Yellowjackets.

  • MM4321

Like mine, sadly, her legs are a bit too stubby to pull off that skirt. And the makeup . . .ugh way too much. I have the paint scraper ready and waiting any time she wants it.

  • demidaemon

It is way too stiff and she has no undercarriage protection. It’s too bad, because I actually like the color combo and the bodice, but the skirt kills it quite dead.

  • SophieCollier

It’s Kelly Osborne’s dress. I think she could make it work, but not Demi.

  • Pterodactyl111

I like it, except for the rings.

  • NinjaCate

I love. It’s cute. The hair though. Fug.

  • somebody blonde

It would’ve been better if the skirt were less flared.

  • Haley Buchanan

I love it. Yes, she looks like a character out of a Scott Pilgrim vs the World comic book, but that’s what works for me. Young, fun, colorful, unique – nothing wrong with that!

  • save_the_hobbit

Kind of love it. Her body is great and I love that she shows that girls that aren’t stick thin can wear what they want too. Kind of wish her hair had been down though.

  • livesarah

I hate the shape but she is really making this work.

  • Gorengirl

All she needs is a set of pom-poms and she can cheer for the Steelers.
