Rihanna in Givenchy Couture at the 2014 iHeartRadio Music Awards

Posted on May 02, 2014

Well where else was she going to sport her lizard lips? It was the right time and the right place, darlings.

We may not love what she’s wearing, but we are here for her hair and face. From the neck up, she’s stunning. From the neck down, she’s essentially Cher – and that can never be a bad thing for a gal on stage.

I really dig the lips. A fun and unexpected pop of color that she manages to make work in a way mere mortals never could.

      • Nicole C

Plus, she just looks like she’s having fun. What a smile!

        • andreawey

I agree, it’s nice to see her really smiling

      • mila_8

I’m not opposed to the green, looks good, but hate what it does to her teeth. Distracting:/

    • Ginger

      *Reaches for the whiskey*

I love it? I can’t help it? It’s pretty fucking fabulous…no matter how you put it.

      • Kent Roby

Right? I would hate this dress on almost anyone, but Ri just looks amazing (yet again). She just keeps getting better and better.

    • WaterGhost

Now THAT’S how you do lipstick. Except it makes her teeth look grey.

      • marlie

I see a greenish tint. But yeah, who’d do that to their teeth?

        • Kent Roby

This wouldn’t work for a daily look, but here we of course know that her teeth look darker only because of the novelty lipstick, so I think it’s awesome.

    • snarkykitten

She definitely looks better than the models!

    • Imma Mäder

can’t hate on that fun ’90s gwen stefani’ hair! don’t care much for the clothes tbh, but the texture of that leather jacket brings back some sweet memories of smoky punk concerts ten years ago!

      • suzanne77

Those are bantu knots, which precede Gwen Stefani, by quite a bit. Black women have been rocking them forever.

        • Imma Mäder

thanks for the education! As a white girl growing up in Europe in the 90s I still have a loooooot to learn about black culture! you just made me spend half an hour watching hair tutorials on youtube :)

          • suzanne77

No worries. There are some beautiful hairstyles out there.

    • lexilexi

Uncles, I dislike everything about this look.

      • Julie Chase

Everything. And I’m two beers deep.

      • 3boysful

If I were a guy and in a room alone with this, I’d be frightened.

        • Tracy M

          But maybe that’s okay.

          • Kent Roby

True, it’s basically a costume for an awards show, and it’s Rihanna; the usual rules do not apply here!

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

I like everything but the earrings?

    • GillianHolroyd

      I’d kill for those eyebrows.

    • Huntsmanfan

Loving the 90’s Lauryn Hill Hairdo

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Love it. My favourite bit is that she ditched the horrible coral nails.

    • formerlyAnon

The hair is a brilliant contribution.

She really needs to come with a warning label “Do Not Try This At Home. Filmed on a closed course with a professional driver/beauty.”

      Just because SHE can, boys & girls . . . .

      • Kitten Mittons

Yes, I love it all on her, and pretty much nobody else. But I have irrational love for her.

      • Sarah

Yes, all the lizard-lip copycats I’m foreseeing should be advised of that warning label…

        • MilaXX

Also crazy colored lipsticks are having a bit of a resurgence. Brands like OCC and Cult Lipstick and the like are having a field day with them.

      • MilaXX

Actually bantu knots are worn by WOC all the time. I sometimes style my locs in bantu knots just for the the curly set I get when I take them down.

        • formerlyAnon

I haven’t noticed them around here, which may be me not paying attention. (I see government employees and sorority sisters with short natural or longer processed dos and students/artists/bohos who tend to braids and short natural styles with very occasionally short locs. Occasionally a longer old school afro.) Of course, African American women make up probably less than 15% of the women I see each week, so there’s that.

        • somebody blonde

I wonder if they’re popular in some places but not others? I’ve never seen a black girl wearing them around here, and way more than 15% of the women I see are black. And it’s not a style I’ve seen on any of my friends. Do some people think it’s like wearing your hair pinned, ie, it’s a style that leads to another style so you don’t wear it in public?

          • MilaXX

No it’s a perfectly acceptable style.

            • somebody blonde

I google-imaged them and I do recognize them from there- it’s just that I’ve only seen women with the small, very close to the head ones, so I didn’t even recognize it as the same style. Maybe Bay Area women think it looks too 90’s to have the big ones or something, I don’t know.

            • MilaXX

It varies based on hair length and personal style. Some people get really fancy with the parts, some do simple grids.

    • another_laura

I’m in awe of her hair! Sadly, the lipstick is making her teeth look a little green – eek.

    • Tanya Wade

Madonna meets En Vogue. I kind of dig it, esp. the rosaries.

      • Anna

Omg, yes! The Funky Divas album cover!

    • Anna

I AM HERE for the Bjork circa 1994 hair. Definitely Cher from the neck down and I concur that is not a bad thing. Love.

      • boweryboy

        Ahhh, I miss that bjork.

      • suzanne77

Bjork was rocking the bantu knots in the 90’s for sure, but centuries of black women had her beat. :)

        • MilaXX

          AMEN!

          • suzanne77

Thank you Miss MilaXX. I love all your comments here.

            • MilaXX

              I try. :-)

        • Anna

I always wanted to know what the hairstyle was called so thanks to you and @julnyes:disqus for the info :). I was a teen in the ’90s so my frame of reference comes Bjork, Gwen Stefani, etc.

          • suzanne77

I graduated in 1995. I feel ya, but I also know where Gwen and Bjork got their references from. :)

    • Nika E

I absolutely love this! I usually dont ever like what she wears but this is fantastic to me. Yes!

    • Sonia Perez

THIS lady can do no wrong. She pulls off just about everything she wears!

    • boweryboy

From the neck up, she’s always stunning. From the neck down, it’s usually WTF. This entire look reeks of try hard.

    • kimmeister

Meanwhile, I see the hair and think of Darth Maul.

    • julnyes

I’m always a big fan of a properly done bantu knot hair style (predates Bjork and Gwen Stefani, Ladies!)

      • suzanne77

        THANK YOU!

    • julnyes

also this qualifies as an actual hairstyle (and will transition fabulously into a bantu knot-out style) unlike her bobby pin wrap of a few months ago.

    • Alloy Jane

How on earth is she wearing a leather jacket in 100° weather? Katy Perry wishes she looked this natural in any of her getups. There’s something about RhiRhi that makes her never look like she’s wearing a costume, even when she’s dressed so theatrically. Katy and Gaga’s looks always feel so fabricated, even if they look great and are pulling it off, you can feel the deliberation of each look. Rhianna though? It’s like she emerged from a cocoon into the spotlight.

      • demidaemon

I think part of it is natural confidence, and part of it is a little bit of not giving a fuck. The problem with Katy and Gaga is that they give too many fucks sometimes, if you get what I mean.

        • MilaXX

Yup Rhi RHi always has a “I don’t care what you think I’m rocking this.” attitude about her.

        • Alloy Jane

I feel ya. Katy and Gaga give all the fucks. But Rhianna is a duck and judgement is just water.

          • demidaemon

            :)

    • Laylalola

She’s always striking in that one-of-a-kind way certain celebrities have that make me think she’s not long for this world.

      • malarson2

Yes!! I tried to allude to this sentiment on another one of her outfits here on TLo last week and all I could get out was that she looks unwashed in a tacky way. But what you’ve said here is really what I mean. She somehow manages to look self-destructive to me. Those are the words I need. Thank you for the guidance.

    • Denise Alden

No mention of the handsome devil behind her in the first photo? Handler? Lord a-mighty is he gorgeous. Also: she’s pulling it off, isn’t she?

      • Introspective

chocolate handler is the business. for reals. sausage friday indeed.

        • MilaXX

YAS! That’s a nice chocolate drop right there!

    • decormaven

She is rocking this look. That’s diva right there.

    • lobsterlen

How are her teeth not smeared with that green lip slim?

      • boweryboy

Check the third photo up from the bottom. It looks like she ate some green eggs and ham for dinner.

    • Lilithcat

      Oh honey no.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I will never understand the fascination for sheer over undies-in public.

    • Malibufire

I’m starting to think I’m the only person on the planet who hasn’t drunk the RiRi koolaid. She leaves me cold, style and substance.

      • somebody blonde

I’m with you. When other people are talking about whatever qualities they see in her that make ugly outfits work for her I keep going, “Huh? But… it’s NOT working…”

        • largishbearishAtlish

you know the saying ‘get dressed and take of one piece of jewelry?’ in this case 6 pieces..way to much… maybe 6 not 8 rings?

      • ShaoLinKitten

        You’re not the only one.

    • BobStPaul

      This is truly horrendous.

    • Vicky

This whole outfit is confusing and a little scary but I love it on her. I just cannot seem to work up any dislike for the outrageous clothes she wears– she’s always so confident and radiant that she can make literally anything work for her. I’m team Rihanna 4ever.

    • mdcoon127

      Hate the lipstick

      • Lori

Among other problems, it’s making her teeth look green. Either that or she got some on her teeth in the limo and it stained. Either way, not good.

    • Constant Reader

You know, as much as I HATE Sheer Over Hipsters and Bra, I am not clutching my pearls over this one. I like how she made it edgy with the hair and makeup, love the jewelry, and if there is ever a venue for visible panties, this is it.

    • Lily

      My Pretty Goth Princess.

    • Milos Mom

      I *despise* this look.

    • Introspective

her face is *beautiful*. no matter how crazy the get up that is always my first thought when I see her, which suggests the power behind such beauty– because it tempers my reaction to everything else she’s sporting. (ie, shit I’d irrationally hate on anyone else, I will like if not love on her).

      • formerlyAnon

All those studies showing that people considered attractive get an easier road than the ordinary or the unattractive aren’t wrong.

    • FibonacciSequins

I hate that dress but she’s wearing the shit out of it. Love her hair style, want to love the jacket but the leather is too heavy and textured.

    • crash1212

Her hair is giving me life. I love everything about this – she’s rockin’ it, it’s venue appropriate it’s fun…and where else ya gonna wear your green lipstick? Well, maybe the MTV awards, but I don’t think she’d be caught dead there!

    • Gatto Nero

      Bam!

    • Susan Velazquez

I have been waiting all day to see if you were going to feature her. How could you NOT? My only quibble is the jewelry. Looks like that fake tacky costume jewelry from the 99 cents store. I think a statement ring or bracelet would have worked better.

    • Bexxx

      Lisa Left Eye Lopez Realness.

    • ojosazules

It’s Rihanna so she looks amazing, but this gothy wind chimey look doesn’t suit her radiance. It dims it.

    • mlurve

Awesome, now I won’t feel as weird showing up to the TLo meeting in NYC tomorrow in my green lipstick!

    • Cheryl

Love it on Rhianna, in the more covered up version. Who’d thunk she would have opted for the more modest version? And the dark green lipstick, that’s a hell ya from me.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

Any time you’re channelling Miley, Madonna, and the Wicked Witch of the West, you’re going down the wrong path. When you’re channelling all three at the same time, you need to rethink yourself entirely.

Lace dress over panties will never read as anything but vulgar.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I wish her music showed this much personality and forethought.

    • MilaXX

Lord help me I like this. I always love a good set of bantu knots.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Gotta agree, neck up? total slam dunk. Neck down? WTF were you thinking, if thinking was a part in the process at all?

    • quiltrx

I’m liking from the neck up…fun and tough.
But the dress is skanky, even for stage wear. When you look at that magical dress she wore with Eminem at the Grammys, this is pretty lousy.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Living for her hair and face. I miss the 90s.

    • LadyVimes

Snaps for her. That wouldn’t work on pretty much anyone with less presence than she has.

    • marlie

So we really are going back to this hairdo, then? It really is 1994 all over again. Can’t say that I like it. Also, I hate, hate, hate the green lips, and the dress doesn’t impress me either.

    • Katrin

      Left Eye Lopez hair

    • LadyLuck777

Although she does look beautiful in the face, it is still very reminiscent of Medusa in Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. Maybe it’s just the green lips.

    • annrr

What?! her teeth are green. No

    • CT14

She found a dress to match her new tattoo.

    • Columbinia

So, my question is, when celebrities do a look like this that is so much a costume (and one with many, uh, unusual elements), do they do run-throughs to create and refine the look? How many and how much time is spent trying things on and putting this together? How many people get creative input?

    • unbornfawn

On paper this look is a disaster. Being Rihanna and having her cray cray outfit wearing superpowers… this look is amazing. I hate her, in the nicest possible way.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

The earrings, necklaces and rings trash up what could be a modern glamorous look. Sorry Riccardo but a leather motorcycle will NEVER be couture…. EVER!

      • ShaoLinKitten

Amen, Bert! Add to that the fact that black lace is so over. Not a fan of sheer either. I can’t get on the love train for this one.

    • somebody blonde

Guys, I think your minds have temporarily been turned to stone, because she looks horrifying to my eyes.

    • demidaemon

I still hate sheer and lace, but damn if she isn’t making it work here, especially with the really edgy headsuit. You win this one, Rihanna.

    • ChristySchiff

I’m not on board with the lips. But I’ll be damned if she’s not just about making them work.

    • SewingSiren

Love this look head to toe.

    • Clash D

Her head is giving me some Lauren Hill vibes, which I absolutely love.
The sheer trend however, has to stop.

    • a_liking

amazing, flawless, indescribably incredible. BAM. BOW DOWN. hers is quickly becoming my favorite celeb style.

    • rhône

      This changed my life.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

I love her sense of costume and sheer fun in what she wears–never, ever thought I would love green lipstick, but man, it works on her.

    • Anne At Large

Loving the ventilated widow’s weeds. This girl makes it all work!

    • largishbearishAtlish

Did she really pick the dress to match her HAND tattoo? really? ugh.

    • lillyvonschtupp

She looks like a doll I have, “La Reine de la Nuit”. I don’t like her, but the outfit is bitchin’!

    • cocohall

I feel like she should be a guest star on an episode of the original Star Trek. Captain Kirk beams down and discovers some fabulously dressed aliens with Rihanna as their leader. And he immediately considers ditching the Enterprise and staying on Planet Bantu with her forever. Which is a long way of saying, she looks fabulous, but this is not a look for mere mortals.

    • Danielle

She epitomizes “Go Big or Go Home”. Bless.

    • Man Dala

Her head reminds me of Madonna in the video of Human Nature.

    • amanda lynn

OMG. I suddenly want green lipstick and I miss my gun-metal grey lipstick. That was fun.

    • andreawey

I abhor all that black lace and it looks sad on the models but this girl can rock anything!
