Honey, we don’t understand. Help us out here. Did you … want to look like this?

What a potentially pretty look gone wrong. We suspect she saw those two adorable prints and fell in love with it, not managing to notice how badly the proportions work on her. The shape of this dress is really cute, but when you cut a line across the middle like that, the eye’s going to want to see a defined waist. It turns a cute shift into a sack and situates her waist several inches south of where it actually is. We suspect it’s meant to be worn with the coat, as an ensemble. We’re not big on matchy coats, but it’s a much better look that way.

PS I believe this would be an example of what my mother termed “hiding one’s light under a bushel”. The bushel here being a freakin’ bushel of ugly dress.

    • littlemac8

I was looking at the top and her make up and asking myself what could be wrong with this look. Then I scrolled down and a oooh nooo escaped me. Horrendously unflattering cut.

  • It’s a good choice if you want people to offer you a seat on the tube.

  • Nancer

    Oh no! She Brittaed it!

    • leahpapa

      She’s the AT&T of people!

    • FancyPhilly

Just about to say the same thing. She pulled a Britta.

  • Scimommy

Great dress. To get pregnancy rumors started.

  • alyce1213

Pretty from the bosom up (pic #5). That runway coat is the opposite of coat porn. It’s what they’d show you as a form of aversion therapy if you’re addicted to outerwear.
Eta: I think she looks like she could Cat Deeley’s kid sister.

  • Danielle

    Textbook Scrolldown Fug.

  • ashtangajunkie

Am I just cranky? I hate everything today. Maybe I need more coffee…And by coffee, I mean booze.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

      I’m with you on that.

    • decormaven

[holds out teacup] “Get me a bromide.. and put some gin in it.”

  • israel8491

The colors in the dress are beautiful and compliment her coloring well. The shape of the dress is a crime against humanity.

  • I don’t even like it with the coat. Sacks, both of them.

  • Anna

No. Not even on Miss Kiernan.

  • lunchcoma

Oh, I thought it was going to be so pretty when I saw the print in the thumbnail!

    • Sarah

Me too! Then, pup tent sadness 🙁

      • Kayceed

It’s a dress for a toddler who has not completed potty training – plenty of room for the diaper.

  • Capt. Renault

Gillian, was the rack close to the girls’ section, perhaps? Really close? Perhaps in?

  • In_Stitches

Verdict on the shoes on the model? I kind of love em.

    • kimmeister

Is there a sheer part, or are they really on the cusp of stabbing her vamp?

      • In_Stitches

I don’t see one, so I think the latter, but we don’t have an up close shot.

  • TrixieConQueso

This is the girl in the group photo that I would stand next to, so I would appear to be thin.

  • Qitkat

You’ve got to be kidding me. Those dime store printed ginghams are back with the random flowers? They were awful the first time in the 70s.

  • kimmeister

Oh man, the droopy shoulders on that coat are burning my eyes. Combined with the sleeve length, it is creating a weird Frankenstein shape.

  • Twee as fuck! Gillian, did you steal this dress from Hailee Steinfeld?

  • Vaniljekjeks

What are you wearing, Brit ta?!

  • marlie

I think both of the prints are ugly, and so is the shape of the dress. And she’s sporting casual, DIY hair and makeup.

  • shnaggi

Proportions all wrong I have to agree that dropped waist needs to be lower by about 2 inches and it looks like the construction is needing either a lining or better finishing. The corner hem on that jacket is poofy as are the sleeves that fabric has not been cut on the correct bias/grain.Pity because it is a lovely pattern combination.

  • MilaXX

It’s a cute dress with the wrong shoe. I also think the dress is a bit too juvenile for her. Pack this up and send it to Kiernan.

  • decormaven

Dropped-waist dresses will remind me, always, of my plus-size childhood. Wish she had worn the coat, it dresses it up a bit more.

  • crash1212

Granted, Gillian up there chose this monstrosity, but the bigger WTF needs to go to this Tanya Taylor person. As in WTF were you thinking with the truly ugly design that doesn’t even look good on the model?

  • Lori

If that top was cropped, it would be so much nicer.

  • Lori

Okay, so it’s a dress. No hope there.

  • KinoEye

I love the gingham flower print so much. I wish the entire dress was that print with a higher waist.

ETA: The more I look at that print, the less I like it. Bah. This is just bad all the way around.

  • Akemi

    Oh dear. No no no.

  • lamamu

The funny thing is that she has a total Be Me expression on her face.

    • Gatto Nero

At least she looks happy. I think it’s worse when someone is dressed badly and her expression says that she knows she’s been duped by the stylists/designer.

      • lamamu

Totally agree. The dress becomes secondary when a girl has that kind of glow about her.

  • Gatto Nero

This is one of those dresses (like a lot of Marc Jacobs IMO) that can only be worn by a tall, skinny, 16-year-old model with a sense of irony.
And it’s much better with the coat.

  • LadyVimes

It isn’t flattering on the model either. It is irredeemable.

  • Shelby

Would a belt help? I’m asking seriously because I love the print too and want to salvage the outfit…

  • GeoDiva

So needs the coat, otherwise it looks like she got dressed in the dark.

  • Susan Velazquez

The dress would have been cute if the designer had just picked ONE print. I prefer the top one since it makes her eyes pop.

  • sagecreek

Oh no! And she looks so cute, neck up. Who is she, btw?

    • Imasewsure

She’s one of the stars of Community. Don’t think I’ve seen her in anything else

  • Lilithcat

Even the model looks pregnant in this.

  • Lisalady161

I don’t even like the dress with coat on the model. On Gillian it makes her torso look horribly stunted.

  • FibonacciSequins

Good Lord. Shame on whoever designed that.

  • conniemd

I hate the print in the skirt and coat. Flowers and gingham don’t go together. Most of all I hate the shapelessness of the dropped waist. I could like a dropped waist if it was lower as in a flapper style and didn’t just look like a gunny sack. But this dropped waist is too loose and big and not low enough to be proportional and flattering

  • demidaemon

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE. This is one of the most unflattering dresses I’ve seen in a while. She needed to shorten the bodice significantly, slap a belt of it, and go. Of course, then, it would be super short, so maybe she should have just avoided it all together.

    • Kitten Mittons

Avoid, definitely. Dodge, dip, duck, dive, and…… dodge.

      • demidaemon

Yeah, I realized after typing out my alterations that a different dress would just be easier and more flattering.

        • Kitten Mittons

Well, I think at first glance it almost looks like a really cute spring time dress that needs a tweak, but the longer you look at it the more problems you see. So that’s understandable!

I will give her points for trying to dress for the right season, though.

  • Jacob Bowen

My Shih Tzu yelped as I scrolled down…clearly we were on the same wavelength. YUCK!

  • quiltrx

What I can see of the dress under the coat isn’t even flattering on the model. This wouldn’t go over well even on PR.

  • Haley Buchanan

It’s so very, very 90’s, and not in a good way. I’m pretty sure I wore that exact same hair, lip gloss, and dress in 8th grade.

  • Janice Bartels

It’s like a smock for fingerprinting.
Ugh- the print on the yolk doesn’t line up, which would normally really bug me with such a big print, but there is so much else to bug in this outfit, I didn’t even see it on the first scroll down.

  • malarson2

Well…she DOES look very youthful. I’m not even sure I’d select that pattern for an outdoor tablecloth. Maybe if I won it at Bunco or something I would use it, but I’d never pick it myself.

  • Beardslee

A print loving friend of mine would be the first to tell you that liking a print isn’t enough if the garment doesn’t fit or flatter.

  • Boobs Radley

Define/belt the waist, and put on a snowy white or yellow pair of strappy shoes. Then you have an adorable look.

  • Mary Lauer

It’s like she stuck her head on top of Kiernan Shipka’s body wearing that dress. 8-(

  • elzatelzabelz

This dress would have been perfect for Kerry Washington’s pregnancy.

  • The shape is, admittedly, not flattering, but I find myself responding very favorably to the prints, as well. And I love the ensemble with the matching coat.

  • cocohall

I have no clue who this girl is, but in the last picture she seems to be having a rather difficult time controlling a giggle fit. Which makes me think she wore this on a dare from a castmate: ‘if you wear this schmatta to the Hulu up fronts, I’ll bring you lattes every morning for a month” You’ve won the bet dearie, now go home and up cycle this into a picnic table cloth.

  • Anna

It looks like someone took a 1950s tablecloth to make a dress. This print WOULD look pretty adorable as a tablecloth.

  • Bradio311

It reminded me instantly of that oversized, ill-fitting dress that Kurt Russell made Goldie Hawn wear in Overboard.

  • Bobbie_Loblaw

The color is magic on her. The rest is disastrous.

  • Clash D

Scroll down..”pretty girl, pretty dres- wait, what DA hell?

  • Damien W

I don’t mind the silhouette — does she have to prove to the world daily that she’s not pear-shaped or something? It’s a fun dress on a fun girl. It’s not Bjork-goose bad, it’s just offbeat. It suits her personality very well. I like it.

  • Columbinia

    What the heck is that?

  • JynxTheCat

I feel like this wouldbe cute were the prints reversed top>bottom, bottom>top OR must have jacket with.
